Question on Sony WF-1000XM3 Earphone or other brands

Hi,

I have a Bose QC35 (gen 1) headphone and the apple airpods (Gen 1 2017).
I'm comfortable with QC35 still but my airpod basically the right side suddenly stops working after using it for a few minutes and i try the disconnect connect again trick it works and then it disconnetc in 5 mins. Dont know if it cant be repaired or not so i want to buy new earphones (wireless).

Brands I like are Bose, Senheisser or Sony or Beats.
I heard Bose is not good and Beats is average. My eyes are on Sony WF1000XM3B WF-1000XM3.
I want to use it for train to work, or going by walk or in the gym. I don't run outside of gym. But they say the earphone is not sweat resistant.

Any recommendations? Budget max $300.

I also had one last question. Qantas store has sale on earphones now. IF I use points plus pay for example $200 cash +points, can I get gst back on the $200 I actually paid $ from the airport?

Thanks :)

  • Also, my phone is Iphone 11 Pro Max so in terms of compability i wont go for other brands other than the 4 above

    • What is your actual question? XM3 and AirPods are both fantastic. What are you after?

If your AirPods are under warranty, get them replaced in an Apple Store. If not, drain the battery completely including the case and repair them with iPhone.

      • Sorry my question was not clear I am answering it in the comment below.

I don't think they would be under warranty after 3 years. How to repair it? Specific shops or link?

I have the Sony xm3 and love them, sound great, awesome battery life. The only let down imo is the lack of multi Bluetooth connections.

    • as in connecting to multiple devices?

Yeah, like changing from phone to PC, I have to disconnect my phone first, which can be frustrating.

        • Fair enough. Can you go to gym with it though? That was more of concern for me

@aus1990: Have been here for >12 months, get fairly sweaty but leather cups still in good shape. I do make sure they get a chance to dry afterwards though.

@aus1990: Yeah Ive also used them at the gym for about a year now and no issues.

Just to clarify my question and what I'm after:

    1. My airpods not working (1 side) properly, is it worth going after the repair path (3 years old) or buy a new earphone (wireless)

    2. If buying new, which brand (Bose, Sony,Beats, Senheisser)?

    3. If sony, Qantas store has sale now, I can buy it for like $260+2000 Points.
In your experience can you get GST back from the airport if you buy something from Qantas store?

There is no reason to restrict yourself to those brands. There are plenty of other brands that are perfectly compatible with iPhones.

To answer your other questions, Is ANC is a must for you? If so then there are 3 notable TWS ANC earbuds on the market right now.
The Sony WF-1000XM3, the 1More True Wireless ANC and the Apple Airpods Pro.
The Airpods pro are obviously out of your budget ($400 rrp), so the Sonys and the newly released 1Mores are what you want to compare. There are a few videos on youtube comparing the 2:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuuJ2sjApXs
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGFjF6YxxDQ

Note that the 1Mores are slightly cheaper than the Sonys but availability is still a bit limited at the moment. I recently purchased the 1Mores for $258 and have been very happy with them. I have not tried the Sonys before though so I can't compare.

Both these earbuds don't have water/sweat resistance, so if you sweat a lot you may be risking it.

Also you can only get GST back on purchases greater than $300 (Or pay more than $300 cash in the case of Qantas). I have purchased from the Qantas Store before and they do issue you a tax invoice with GST clearly displayed so it should work for purchases greater than $300. But I have never tried claiming before.

    • Omg I claim all the time i forgot it is $300 yep haha.
This is the deal for sony:https://www.qantasstore.com.au/p/sony-wf1000xm3b-wf-1000xm3-truly-wireless-noise-cancelling-in-ear-headphones/1027983
I got 400K+ points but I think cheaper to pay cash considering points value more for flights so $261 + 2k points.

Airpods pro my coworkers say it is not very nicely fit and also $400 is not worth. Just like how iphone is over priced their other products are as well (I own iphone but ye not willing to pay extra for no reason).

The qantas sale is kind of triggering me i guess.

  • I'm chatting with apple care as well to see repair costs. if it costs too much ill just buy new ones

  • Bowers and Wilkins PI3 or PI4. PI3 are $299, I have a set and they sound awesome, no active noise cancelling but a fair bit of passive noise cancelling. PI3 are active noise cancelling but are a little bit more expensive.
    My 2c anyways

  • Yeah I agree with others. I have both Bose QC 35 and Sony WH-1000XM3 over ear cans (passed Bose onto Son), but for my next true wireless buds, I'm actually looking at Jabra Elite Active. Just waiting for the 75 version. This is just based on reviews and research. The Sonys as you mentioned are not sweat resistant and I'm not convinced they'll stay in my ears while exercising.

Restricting yourself to certain brands is not always the way to the best "fit" excuse the pun.

I have the Jabra ROX wireless (still tethered with a wire in between which annoys me) but the sound in them is ridiculously sublime. On some music I actually find them to be more pleasant (more oomph) than the Bose or Sony.

Sure no ANC, but with a pair of comply tips to get a good seal, I really don't think I get any more background noise than the Bose or Sony's.

I'd consider some other brands. YMMV.

  • Fair enough thanks all.
I'm only considering models on Sale on Qantas website so limited in that way..they've got sony,Bang and Olufsen,Bose, Beats, Jaybirds on sale. I think out of all those Sony?

Have you considered buying a cheaper earphone just for exercising (such as the SoundPeats that show up here occasionally) and another one for the rest of the time?
That way you won't have to worry about sweat resistance.
I have the SoundPeats Q30 and am super happy with them for exercising etc. (They do have a cable between the earpieces but there are models that don't), and for the $30 I got them for…

    • I'll surely look into this one:)
