Pocket Purchase on eBay- Inadvertently Bought Item- Seeking Advice

I wouldn't have thought this was possible but it happened to me. My phone was in my pocket on Friday afternoon and I had looked at something on ebay earlier but not dyson vacuum cleaners. Suddenly, around 5pm, I get an email from ebay confirming my purchase of a dyson vacuum. I swear I did not buy anything and honestly have no idea how it happened. I called ebay outraged and they said that the purchase came from the ip address of my mobile phone and given that I had bought from that device previously they viewed it as legitimate.
I asked them how it can possibly be that I clicked and bought something without my knowledge and they said they do not have one click purchasing. The only possible explanation is that there was some type of pop up that appeared and like a pocket call, I clicked on it without knowing it and bought the item.
I have now uninstalled the app but I am worried this could happen again so would like to have some guidance from you smart people as to how this happened and what I can do to prevent it.
Meanwhile, dyson says they can't cancel the order as it has already been "sent" but that they will let me return it once it arrives and get a refund. But what a hassle!

Take it as a sign from god that you should vacuum more.

Hate to break it to you , but most of us are already way ahead of you and have owned vacuum cleaners for years, if not decades :p

they refunded me with groupon credit. still better than nothing.

The quality of baiting threads really is going downhill. We're supposed to believe you accidentally pocket ordered an item on eBay through a locked screen and going through several pages including inputting payment information? Come on.

I would be surprised too, except its actually happened to me.
While it may no be the case anymore, if you had your Paypal linked to the eBay phone app it was possible to do 1-click purchases.
I ended up accidentally buying something that I was going to buy anyway - but from a different seller and for a few dollars more than another seller I was considering.

      • My PayPal and credit card are linked and the purchase went through on that card. I have looked at dysons on eBay in the past but not recently. Finally, someone believes me. Can you tell me what I need to do to prevent this from happening again?

        • Unfortunately I have no solution for the phone app. Since my incident have only ordered on eBay through the computer, and haven't had a problem.

          • @djsweet: still, I can't understand how I bought an item I had never even looked at

  • Yes, it's true. If it wasn't so ridiculous, I wouldn't have posted it.

I have been browsing … and my then 2 year old got hold of the phone and committed me to some furniture repairs on that "hire a person" site.

Anyway I rang the service provider and she immediately and very kindly offered to cancel. I decided to go ahead anyway.

She did an excellent job, probably the highest quality work I received out of that app.

  • Cant you lock the app?

So that means you lock your phone, then the app.

    • I don't have the ebay app any more, but I think you can "log out" from the app. That would mean you have to enter your username & password in before making a purchase, which seems all but impossible to happen accidentally.

  • Wow, a butt purchase!

Don't you need to confirm purchase before you buy? What are the odds!

  • I always fingerprint protect apps like ebay, amazon, expedia etc to prevent stuff like this from happening.

SOLUTION: Disable One Touch login on your PayPal account.
    https://www.paypal.com/us/webapps/mpp/one-touch-checkout/faq

  • As suggested disable any links to PayPal or CC. You can also turn off data access to apps if you aren’t using them and don’t want for delete them.
