I've seen quite a few deals for the 1TB Samsung evo 860. It's normally around $200 but has been as low as $150.

    • cool thanks for the reply. I need to check for a deal on this.

  • For video editing a MLC based SSD is far better than a TLC/QLD which what you'd be realistically looking at for a 1tb drive at $200 or below. The samsung PRO range uses MLC but they are more expensive but a 512gb model is available for a $198 (https://www.centrecom.com.au/samsung-860-pro-512gb-25-sata-i…) … It's endurance is 600Tb written - which is the same as the 860 EVO 1tb (at around $210). the BX/MX range from Cruicial I'd avoid as the TBW is half as the samsungs but the price isn't half so not the same $ per gb / durability.

This does however depend what sort of 4K content you're dealing with, camcorder video files are pretty compressed compared to say a GH5 or Blackmagic camera where the files are massive and copying to/from an SSD will wear it out quite quickly.

    • Thanks for all the information. I will look in to the Samsung PRO range.

My footage is from GH5 which is 150mbps. I usually convert them in to proxies for easier rendering.

      • If you're using Davinci Resolve (full version unless 8bit 4:2:0 given Davinci free version doesn't do GH5's 10 bit 4:2:2) from what I remember you can have your proxies/cache files saved to the SSD while keeping the source on a old fashioned spinning drive.. I found least on my older system creaties proxies takes a fair bit of time, but once its done scrubbing a timeline is so much better.
