Premium or Ultimate Diesel Harmful?

Hi I drive a 2012 Kia Sorento.

I heard someone say premium diesel is bad for my fuel injectors and overall health of the vehicle.

Do you suggest I put ultimate diesel while it is harmful to use premium for my suv?

Is this true?

Sorry my owners manual has no indication.

  • Nah it’s not harmful - it’s probably not worth the price premium although most inner city places it’s all they offer

  • I'm welcome to be educated on this but I always understood that the more premium variety of diesel just had more anti-foaming agents, which if I understand it correctly, just lets you fill up the tank faster with less mess.

Very harmful if you own the 3.5l petrol model.

  • Marketing bullshit.

InB4; some retard turns up claiming they get more power and increased fuel economy from using “premium” diesel. (Unless you drive your auto in a manual mode)

My diesel gets twice the economy on premium, but only when I'm rev matching the downshift in my auto. I also put a bit of 98 in the mix to clean the injectors.

Have you ever put 98 in a diesel?

        • +1

I was joking, don't do that

Works perfectly for me, but I don't exceed 3,000rpm

  • what's the difference between premium diesel and ultimate diesel ? Apart from the price. Honest question. Cetane rating ?

    • Which service station brand you get it from.

      • I don’t drive diesel, just curious.

        • Diesel curious? Don't knock it til you try it :-)

        • And that's just it, different servos call them different names, so no real difference.

Diesel has one decent benefit at the moment, non-fluctuating prices. Seems fairly consistent all the time around here.

The same difference between gold plated HDMI cables and regular HDMI cables.

      • So,… nothing ? 🤣🤣

        • Added stuff, the addition of which has questionable positive benefits…

    • Fuel cleaners and a shorter line at the servo if there is a pump thst only does premium.

7 eleven has Premium Diesel and BP has Ultimate Diesel. Caltex has Vortex.

All diesel out there is sold as having special additives to clean your injectors and engine. It's all marketing w*nk. Use whatever diesel is cheapest from a place that sells high volumes (usually one and the same thing). It must meet Australian standards to be on sale, and you won't find any diesel that doesn't. No matter how special the marketing claims it is.

I've been using the cheapest possible diesel in my Hyundai i30 and for 100k km, no problems. I tried 'better' BP diesel and noticed no tangible performance or fuel consumption improvement.

    • This

    • I thought all diesel fuels have lots of cleaning additives added anyway. So not sure what makes the 'premium' diesel so premium.

    ewwwww….diesel.

The only crucial factor with diesel is do your best to avoid “dirty” fuel. If you see a tanker at a servo, keep going to the next one. Water and sediment are your enemies.

    • If you see a tanker at a servo, keep going to the next one

      Why? Sparky sparky boom boom?

      • Theory is that the fresh load stirs up all the crap in the tank and it can get to your car more readily than if the load has had time to settle.

Then again, who’s to say a tanker hasn’t just left the servo just before you arrive?

  • All diesel must meet the regulated specifications outlined here:

    https://www.environment.gov.au/protection/fuel-quality/stand…

Diesel is basically all the same (originating from 1 of the 4 refineries in Australia or imported). The terminals where the fuel trucks fill up to distribute to the servos have different additives based on where they're sending the fuel. For example, if going to BP, the truck will fill up with the diesel and at the same time, the "ultimate" additive is blended in. Think of it as a few big diesel storage tanks with small chemical additive tanks with each companies proprietary additive being blended in.

Truck diesel is diesel without any additives as is usually $0.02/L cheaper.

Do the additives do anything? Yes they all do. To what extent and how much better one is vs the other will forever be a debate
