Dog Surveillance - Low Cost Setup?

Hey guys,

I wouldn't mind setting up a camera in the laundry where we have the dog door. My puppy keeps dragging stuff through and to be honest, I think it would be hilarious to watch. (He managed to pull a 6 foot branch of a tree through the dog door, down the corridor, upstairs and onto my couch).

Here is a pic of the little jerk

Ideally it would be via an app on my iPhone with a movement alert.

I have the following old tech at my disposal:

iPhone 6+ 128gb
iPad 2nd gen (ollldddddd) 32gb

I have wifi.

Suggestions for a mount to install it?
An app that meets my needs, I don't mind paying once off for an app, less open to a recurring subscription.

Failing that, a camera that would meet these same needs?

Thanks!

I have successfully used my old iPhone 4S and the free Alfred Camera app (now called "DIY CCTV Camera & Baby Monitor") to watch my dog.
You download the app on both phones and set one as the camera (old iPhone) and the other as the viewer (your phone). It has motion detection alerts and you can yell at your dog using the two-way talk. The night filter is also really good and when you want to see the live stream, it connects quickly.

I have also used the free Presence app which is slower to connect but can be set up to record a 1-minute clip after detecting motion (good if you can't tune in to watch your dog straight away). It also has motion detection alerts and two-way talk. Plus it supports multiple cameras so you could set up your old iPhone and your old iPad to cover two areas of the house (watch him bring it in AND see what he does with it!).

I put my old phone in a self stick and wedged the stick in something that was already attached to the wall (the phone holder part can be rotated so I could aim it where I wanted).

The only issue with these apps is when the wifi drops out, they won't reconnect themselves. This would happen to me every few days but wasn't much of a problem for what I was using it for. I've since switched to a Yi camera which I got cheap. Doesn't record without paying for a subscription but is always connected so less hassle for me.

For your situation, I'd try out one of the apps first. Easy to set up and should do the trick for free.

Love your dog. I went to put on my shoes one day and found one of my kitties had put a dead bird in one of them. Our two kittens also managed to dismantle a Kong treat dispenser, take the bottom out through the cat door and get it under the house. I would’ve loved footage of that.

You might want to warn anyone else in the house you are doing this. We had some friends babysit our moggie and he setup a camera to see if the kitty moved during the day. He explained this to his girlfriend, that night, and she explained she had been wandering around the house naked.

Otherwise any cheap babycam might suit you, like https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/475174 for example.
