Buying a gift card (for flight centre, for example) and pairing it with CR/SB promotions seems to be my best option.

Best bet to get cheap flights is patience, attentiveness, and flexibility.
If you have decided on a destination you keep watching, use alerts, and keep checking Ozbargain until cheap flights pop up.
Then you grab them quick for the dates available.
You might not get the place you want on the dates you want, but you can generally get the place you want at SOME time.

Depends how flexible you are. Best way to get cheap flights is to fly when nobody else flies. If this isn't an option, then at least buy when nobody else buys. Sign up for relevant alerts and sales.
If you use Flight Centre gift cards then you may not be able to activate the free travel insurance on your credit card. You may then be worse off if you have to buy a separate travel insurance policy.
Kayak is quite good.
Expedia is ok with looking at options too. Just depends on which functionality you like
