WDTV Live, back to $99 at Office Works

480

After sitting back up at around $120 the WDTV Live has dropped back to its regular 'cheaper' price of $99. Last post was back in June for this price.

While saving $20 is questionable as to the criteria of 'bargainess', I know they are still hot in demand.

I've had one for about 8 months, but it is so easy to use I'm getting one for the parents today.

probably why OW dropped the price, otherwise they'd have to sell it for 5% less…

      Pro Tip:

Get Officeworks for pricematch Big W's WD TV (not live version) from the website.

The guy at my store sold me a WDTV live for $68 - 5% price guarantee.

      Huzzah!

  • thanks for posting. I've been waiting for this. :)

  • are people installing custom firmware on these if so, is it any good?

  • Custom firmware is great. Using 'sheets' for selecting movies is so much better than looking at a file in explorer…
Has a few little bugs now and then but i am stoked- got this a month ago from OW and am fully happy. Can also use it like a NAS and acsess it from any other computer in the house to watch movies-even my missus Mac.
    Best custom firmware :

    Seriously $99.00??

I bought it for $78.00 from JB Hi Fi in mid 2010. Same brand and model.

Yep, that is why I wasn't sure about posting. But for those specifically looking for one, or those who are looking for a media player it will save them a few dollars.

yep expensive and old ass chipset.

So what alternative are you suggesting ?

    • I bought a Seagate version of this for $99 in JB a few months back too. Reviews said it supported the most formats of all media players. I don't really consider this a bargain.

    I'm interested in this…

but what about this? only $49 more and a lot more features?

Media players are hard to shop for if you haven't used it before..

    • This with a custom firmware or a Boxee. I wouldn't consider anything else. Including my 3 popcorn hours, PCH have dropped the ball IMO - good hardware, bad software.

      • i have an old A110 popcorn hour and it plays some MKV's that crash the WD….

  • How does this compare to Logitech Revue from Amazon US$99 +delivery. I don't mind waiting or paying a bit more for the delivery.

    • Are you able to get Amazon to ship electronics?

  • I highly recommend this box. It plays anything you throw at it, works great on a network and is easy and snappy to use.

Extra features are available with custom firmware too!

    • It plays anything you throw at it,

i've found issues with it not playing some MKV's that work fine on other media players…

    • Snappy? Mine is as slow as all get out when it comes to loading vids … I am going to try some of the firmware and software updates listed above and see how it goes.

  • Does this play MKV with subtitles or RMVB?

If not then its not worth it

    • I'd like to know this too, that is subtitles that can be enabled/disabled without using a separate subtitle file. Also if it can play mkv videos with more than one audio stream (i.e. english or japanese)
