  • thanks OP was waiting for this

Damn perfect timing, found out my google tv chromecast died today

  • +1

Got it during last deal + 20% and $10 TCB promo, still fine to sideload apps.

  • Is there any real reason to buy this with a new smart tv? Does it give you anything else a TCL or Samsung doesn’t?

      • +7

Wait until you experience how laggy the built-in system on the TCL C7K is.

amazon locked down the fire stick so much that it causes so many issues. Just doesnt work when you need it to work, but amazon shills will always neg and spread bs. If the crapstick could be flashed with a clean android rom, itd be a great device. But as of now, its complete trash. Maybe get an old one that can be flashed. All the new ones are just trash.

          • @jsvr: What is a good OS to put on an older one for using a plex client, streaming services and playing photo slide shows? Thx

          • @jsvr: I disagree, I have both a google tv streamer and a fire stick 4k max. With this very simple setup, you can load up not just a customer loader (projectivy is king imo), but also stops auto-updates so you can side load forever through downloader by aftvnews.

          • @jsvr: I've installed a new launcher and side loaded the good stuff on 6 sticks this week. Disabled OTA updates and removed amazons blacklists using LM and ADB. They work great, especially for a $70 stick.

I have to assume these are in stock in Australia so haven't had the OTA update fixing the vulnerability, so should still be available if you stop it from updating during set up. There are ways and means of doing this.

        • I have 77" C5 and it's horrible, using my 5 year old Chromecast device instead and it's much better. Can't believe how crap the inbuilt software is

      • +1

To suport your erudited assesment, can you link a better device in this price range?

      • +1

dont. the crapstick is not worth it

        What so crap?

        • -7

lol, every time i talk shit about Amazon's crapstick all the shills come out and neg my comment. Super locked down android stick sooooooo many issues with it. Google tv or chromecast way better, none of that limited amazon crap. People are just mad cause they have one and defending an obviously poor purchase. Its worth about $20 imo. Just get normal android tv on a normal stick. Leave that amazon crap in its jungle lol

          • +1

@jsvr: did you own a firestick?

            and lock down how?

can't you jailbreak it and sideload apps?

Why googleTV better and which devices you recommend?

            • -1

@pinkybrain: yes i have the firestick 4k max, i believe thats the best one. The android is so amazonified that you cant really expect it to work like an android device. No custom launchers, no boot options, a lot of feature settings you cant get into or set, remote issues, cant cast using normal protocols like a google or android tv, cant use android tv apps like google Home to remote etc. Home assistant linking doesnt work… the list goes on.. It just doesnt work like youd expect it to work. Kinda like car dashes that run on android in cars, theyre super locked down and everything is either incompatible or made incapable to access. Just.. dont do it man.

I root and unlock all my devices. all the latest newest firesticks you cant unlock. I think the older firestick 4k non max could kinda be hacked, but either way, not worth the trouble when there are clear better alternatives. Unless you find one already unlocked on marketplace then yea thats alright. Still think itd require a lot of tinkering and stuff just wont work out of the box.

Get a nvidia shield or Google streamer TV, those run actual clean android tv software and will work like android should work.

              • @jsvr:

yes i have the firestick 4k max

                V1 or V2?

The android is so amazonified that you cant really expect it to work like an android device.

Yeah amazon is doing an Apple but on Android which is suppose to be more open and free.
They are even worst than Apple in that they put a shit ton of ads on it..
Also saw people weren't able to use Firestick when AWS went down.

Amazon main advantage is they regularly discount these Firesticks Max 4K ($59 or less) unlike Apple or Google.

Get a nvidia shield or Google streamer TV

yeah it was a good deal when it was $88 but right now it is bit overpriced for what you get compared in specs of Apple TV..

I think Shield too expensive $300+ for pro model and the device is kinda old, they need to release an updated model using the new switch 2 SOC

What you gonna do when Google also locks down sideloading?

There is not any alternatives unless go back to HTPC but there is no dedicated apps (e.g netflix, youtube etc) so can only use something like kodi which sucks (in terms of UI) if you want to watch youtube or netflix etc

                • @pinkybrain: I agree shield is overpriced. and google streamer tv worth only when on discount. I would just get a used g streamer tv around 100. I think thats worth.

              • @jsvr: Well, I have asked you to provide detail about a device in the same price range. I do have Nvidia Shield Pro - Way out of this price range.
If you are into custom launchers etc, then you should know that you can do that to Fire Stick as well. This 4k Max can be unlocked so you can sideload apps, change launchers, etc. To be honest I do not see that much performance difference in UI between the Shield and 4k Max (having both). Yes, I do have custom launcher, yes I have sideloaded apps to the stick. And I still beleive you will not find better device for the price, as long as you are using it for streaming movies/series (from whatever source). I probably would not be gaming on it, would not run plex server on it, etc. But comparing it to a device 5x the cost is a bit silly.

                • @tm001: womp womp. I never said you cant sideload apps. I sideloaded launchers but almost all of them either dont work, partially work, and none of them can be set as default. Unless you keep the stick from sleeping indefinitely, the launcher will flip back to the default. FYI pressing home will go back to the Amazon default launcher too. What a (profanity) headache. This is already after tinkering with it just to sideload stuff. The crapstick is just such a pain.

              • +1

@jsvr: You can still "unlock" FireTVs that haven't been patched yet to the latest October software:
                https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/17017178/redir

These being most likely old stock form Amazon AU will be vulnerable to the Sept 2025 Exploit.

                • @WalterBiH: straight from that xda link:

*This isn't root, it won't unlock the bootloader, or allow installing custom ROMs. System user is much more limited, but still very powerful on an Amazon Fire device.

System status is temporary (lost after reboot), however changes made are kept. This privileged access will be lost unless you block OTA firmware updates!!!*

                  • @jsvr: I never said it was root or bootloader unlock. I called it "unlock" as common term used for removal of vendor imposed restrictions (aka Jailbreak). That's why I linked the actual threads for full details.

For all intensive purposes, this exploit makes FireTV very much unrestricted and customisable beyond what Amazon is pushing. I find that this has made my Firesticks very usable again.

              • +1

@jsvr: Amazon firestick jailbreak. While I agree with your sentiment that the nvidia shield or google streamer run a clean version of android/google tv, the firestick pro max is a great alternative that goes on sale quite often. tbh it is all down to preferences and how far down the modding rabbit hold you're willing to go, but having options is a great thing especially when it forces all parties to drop their prices for the benefit of us.

                • @deebee8: all that modding or just an extra 30 bucks for a google streamer tv.. minus the headaches and no updates.

why go through all that trouble to save 30 dollars lol

                  • +1

                    @jsvr:

all that modding or just an extra 30 bucks for a google streamer tv.. minus the headaches and no updates.

                    Not extra $30 though…

Official price is $160 on google store
and current local store / amazon price is $134

Only good deal when it was sold for $88…
This is a more acceptable price (though still somewhat high ie $90) for the Google streamer since I don't think it is worth it at $160 to $134 when you can get Apple TV (which is much more powerful) and since Google planning to block sideloading, what is the point of getting the Streamer…

in Australia, only Firestick is selling for regular more acceptable price of $59 since they discount it so often vs Google (which only done it once so far)
In USA, they got Onn 4K plus which is regularly considered better than the Firestick in value for money..
but unfortunately only sold in Wallmart USA…

So it is not that people don't want to get the Google Streamer, it is just that the price unfortunately it is set at is not as good value as the Firestick 4K Max (ie $59)

                    • @pinkybrain: i meant used on marketplace

yes i agree. Its the price.

I dont think google will lock it down too much, and even if they lock it down it would still be proper android not some weird as amazon bloat system

              • +3

                @jsvr:

                No custom launchers.

                Confidently incorrect.

                • -1

@FlyerOne: dont lie. custom launchers cant be set as default and they have all sorts of issues

                  • +2

@jsvr: Sorry, but this is 100% incorrect.
I'm using Wolflauncher as a default on all 3x Firesticks 4k max (v1 and v2) - with no issues at all.

                    • @WalterBiH: lmao, googled wolf launcher and this is literally the first link

                      https://www.reddit.com/r/firetvstick/comments/1lqnjad/guide_…

Guy has tried doing it for the last 2 years and finally did it, looks annoying af to set up to. Point is, the crapstick is just not worth the hassle. Just spend 30 bucks and get something normal, you cant be that poor if you already have 3 crapsticks

cant imagine buying this piece of shite and only being able to use this one "wolf launcher", and ONLY after all the hacking and tinkering.

                  • @jsvr: I can't help you bud. Just because you can't do it, doesn't mean nobody can.

I have set Emotn Launcher as the default launcher on a bunch of sticks and they work perfectly well. A new tick arrived today and I will apply the same mods to it. I have also used Projectivy which is also a terrific launcher and can also be set as default.

          • @jsvr:

. Super locked down android stick sooooooo many issues with it.

You expected everybody are that tech and care about all these crap?

            • @superforever: its not only the tech stuff. Its normal settings you cant access, and native stuff like casting doesnt even work. Average user would be so frustrated, unless everything they own is amazon already (which is what amazon wants and why theyve make the crapstick so crap)

              • @jsvr: Most people don't care, just use Netflix, prime video, freeview tv apps, may be sport apps, so for most people nobody think it is so crap.

I have both, of course google Chromecast tv is better

    • I have a 2023 TCL with awful Google TV performance. I'm happy with the firestick and would recommend it for two reasons, better performance and as an alternative to the google ecosystem. Can't speak for newer TCLs

      • -2

I have this years C7K and tbh it flies, but I uninstalled most of the crap

        • I've got this TV arriving Monday….a little concerned about the other comments saying UI is laggy, what crap did you uninstall?

          • +1

@DigitalSDM: I uninstalled all the apps that I would never use, which was about 90% and it’s great, never laggy

    • TCL or Samsung doesn’t?

TCL is Google TV and Samsung not Andriod

    • What do you think will happen to your personal data when your TV breaks and you send it in for repairs?

      • What my fake Google account and proton mail logins for streaming, who cares

        • Sure, no one cares… until your “fake” account becomes their real way into everything else you own.

          • @freeb1e4me: Mate, not sure i think you know what your on about. That email doesnt link to anything apart from streaming, and even EVEN if they got in, what they get my VPN IP and play list???

In your assessment, better not own a phone, car, laptop, desktop, smart watch, just in case it breaks and has to be fixed.

            • @BatmanAU:

In your assessment, better not own a phone, car, laptop, desktop, smart watch, just in case it breaks and has to be fixed.

Sure, because basic caution and total paranoia are obviously the same thing. Good luck

              • @freeb1e4me: Your so called basic caution turned into an ASIO plot the way you’re going, anyway enjoy your day!

“way into everything else you own”

          • @freeb1e4me: if you are that scared go live in a tinfoil house in the middle of a desert no one will ever bother you

    • For what it's worth, it has better codec support than tvs. I previously needed to transcode and was running into lag when playing off my nas box. The firestick could run things natively. Edge case I know.

  • +4

Might want to wait until tomorrow for APPY10 code.

    • will it cheaper or allowed to combine codes?

    • Tried today:
      APPY10
      HAPPY10
The promotional code you entered is not valid.

      • Well Amazon usually runs APPY10 offer (Amazon App only) on Fridays (not always though). You will have to wait until it kicks in if it does. If you dont want to wait, go ahead and order it.

    • +2

APPY10 worked for me today, got it for $59.

      • same here

      • Same here, worked for me via the amazon app.

  • +2

As long as it doesn't have Vega OS. Kinda worthless to buy if it does; not being able to install smart tube / any YouTube with ad block and sponser skip is a Big no from me (and most people).

  • +3

Note, this model is K3R6AT = Fire TV Stick 4K Max 2nd Gen (2023). Likely running and shipping with the “old” Fire OS (Android-based) platform which is sideloadable.

Apparently the Fire TV Stick 4K Select model is the newer 2025 model with VegaOS which blocks sideloading.

    • 2025 model with VegaOS which blocks sideloading.

They will still have Andriod version call another name.

      • what are talking about?

It is just still gonna be called FireOS (android based)
and VegaOS (linux based) = no sideloading etc. and currently does not have many apps (unless it is run via the amazon cloud)

        • hat are talking about?

I mean the naming of the FireStick not OS.

    • So can you install smarttube on this model?

  • +1

Came down to 54 somehow for me

Just a note for anyone considering getting one of these. I'd highly recommend blocking updates before setting it up and getting system user status. Amazon seems keen on increasing ads and blocking more apps they don't like. Unfortunately, My Fire TV 4k max received the update that patches the exploit before I knew about it. The process seems pretty easy though. Here's a guide.

    • how can we disable the updates?

      • +3

You'll need to block their domains somehow, I'm using adguard on my router but there's also pihole if your router doesn't support that. I've also heard of people limiting their firestick internet speed to something really low while setting it up and doing the exploit.

      • +3

You MUST do it before plugging your stick in. Once you start setting it up it is too late.
You have to block it on your router or your DNS.
Easy to google (and there is a trypoint youtube video from 10th of Oct).
And if you don't know what this means probably don't do it.

      • +5

        DNS block the update domains

        softwareupdates.amazon.com
        d1s31zyz7dcc2d.cloudfront.net
        prod.ota-cloudfront.net

As per https://troypoint.com/amazon-patches-fire-tv-exploit (it's also discussed at the end of the XDA thread)

    • +2

What apps don't they like? Stremio and SmartTube still work.

      • You can find the list of apps they've blocked online but it seems like they're aware of how the devices are being used and might be pressured by streaming services to block more apps. Google has announced plans to block side loading apps on android but who knows what Amazon will do.

        • so if enter developer mode, you will still not be able sideload those apps if the update is started when you connect the stick?

          Google gonna blocking sideloading
and Amazon likely gonna do the same to fireOS

          What alternatives are there?

          • @pinkybrain: The update patches the exploit that's used to gain system user privileges. You need system user privileges to disable OTA updates (like the background update that patches this exploit), for custom launchers (without ads) and disabling the app blocklist. Just to be clear I'm no expert on this and just wanted to let people know that it's an option because I wish I knew before mine OTA updated and patched itself. I mainly used my firestick for Jellyfin and SmartTubeNext among the regular streaming services. I'd have a look at the XDA thread and see if it's for you or not.

    • Can I ask what the update has stopped you doing/installing?

Interested in real-world impact right now rather than the hypotheticals and 'slippery slope' things they 'may block in future'.

      • +1

I wasn't a user of the currently blocked apps but I was hoping to use a custom launcher to avoid the banner ad that takes up 1/3 of the screen and have an overall better UI. You need system user privileges to properly use a launcher and rebind the home button so it doesn't just return to the usual interface. There's also reports of them being blocked altogether.

  • +6

I bought one of these about 2 weeks ago to stream formula 1 through Kayo. Unfortunately, I didn't read the fine print and found out Kayo doesn't support streaming 4K through this device. I also found out this device has a problem with overheating and freezing when streaming HD content through Kayo. I've since returned the device and bought a Google Streamer 4K which does support 4K Kayo and does not overheat.

    • Thank you, just the sort of useful information I need!

Off Topic, any suggestion how to extract surround sound to old home theatre system only with TOSLink Optical input? I saw some audio extractor from Amazon not 100% sure if they work?
