    • Yeah I use one of these from Amazon for the same reason, they work well. I had one die after about 14 months so replaced with a slightly more expensive one that seems to be lasting better

  • These are great. Perfect substitute for anyone using WebOS or Tizen. WiFi 6E as well.

  • Anyone got experience running Plex app on this (not the server)

    • +1

      Fine no problem with Plex

  • silly question but if my TV doesn't support 4K then no point getting this and just get the standard fire stick right?

got a hisense tv bought in 2019

    • +1

Very much so. Don't bother unless you plan to upgrade.

  • +2

Rumour is sideloading is going to be removed, which would make this a lot less useful.

    • +1

if they follow what google is planning to do then it won't be a rumour no more…

Ultimately they want to stop sideloading on all firesticks since many ppl are using them to watch pirated content rather than paying for streaming services

  • My firestick is haunted and keeps turning the TV on by itself

  • +10

Great device when "unlocked" and using custom launcher instead of Amazon ad riddled one. I recommend Wolf Launcher Wolf-Launcher_0.1.9.apk for it's simplicity and speed.
This is probably the last chance to get one that can be moded as new stock will come with patched software update.

I have 3 of these and all working great after the applying September exploit. Your FireTV needs to be at or bellow PS7704 (FireOS7) / RS8149 (FireOS8).

    • IMPORTANT: Order the stick without selecting for it to be auto initialised to your Amazon account
    • IMPORTANT: Skip auto update on initialisation
    • To skip update on initialisation, press and hold "Menu/ |||" (and possibly "Back") button on remote May have to do it few times and wait a bit until it lets you operate Firestick without updating
    • Enable Developer Mode
    • Install Downloader App
    • Install the latest Launcher Manager (v.1.1.3 at the time of writing) through Downloader App: Downloader code: 2370884. (Give Downloader App "Install from unknown sources" permission when prompted)
    • Using either ADBLink for PC or even easier using LM Toolbox for Android phone grant Launcher Manager System User permissions: pm grant com.wolf.tn android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS
    • On FireTV start "Launcher Manager" and select:
      Must:
      • OTA Apps: Disabled
      • ADEP App: Disabled
      • ARCUS App: Disabled
        Optional:
      • Custom Launcher: Wolf Launcher
      • Custom Launcher Status: Active

what if you forgot/didn't know about unlinked account when ordering, is that gonna be an issue with blocking the update

-IMPORTANT: Order the stick without selecting for it to be auto initialised to your Amazon account

    • +1

Probably should have said that you need to block Amazon update servers before connecting Firestick to your network and skipping "update on initialisation" using the key combo.
If you have no ability to block URLs (need either pi-hole, or your Router's parental block capabilities), you could just unplug your routers Internet connection immediately after you see Firestick looking for updates.

Block Amazon updates using DNS Block:
      REQUIRED: d1s31zyz7dcc2d.cloudfront.net
      REQUIRED: amzdigital-a.akamaihd.net
      REQUIRED: amzdigitaldownloads.edgesuite.net
      OPTIONAL: softwareupdates.amazon.com
      OPTIONAL: updates.amazon.com

    • +1

Read this XDA Post on how to skip updates on new device by using Mobile Phone hotspot.

Also, few more URLs to block:

      softwareupdates.amazon.com
      d1s31zyz7dcc2d.cloudfront.net
      prod.ota-cloudfront.net
      updates.amazon.com
      d2jmp5j6kma5v6.cloudfront.net
      d1s31zyz7dcc2d.cloudfront.prod.ota-cloudfront.net
      dd6dycghj50pd.cloudfront.net

      • I have a problem that when you block these URLs it cannot download the Downloader app anymore. I am on FIRE OS 8.1.1.6.

        • I block those URLs as advised by XDA and don't seem to have problem installing apps from Amazon App store.
Maybe try limit the blocked URLs to the essential ones? Read the XDA forum to be sure as I don't want to advise something that ends up in unwanted software update.

You could also use ADB link to connect to your Firestick and push APKs manually (using "Install APK" button). This is how I load the latest Launcher Manager all the time.
Once you have Launcher Manager blocking updates, then you can safely experiment with the URL blocklist to get you downloads working.

          • @WalterBiH: Thanks for that. I temporarily unblocked the URLs. During that time, the software update didn't kick in which I was worried about. Otherwise I had to use ADB shell to clear that update. Anyway, that allowed me to download the Downloader app. After that, I turned on URL filter and then I set it up using Troypoint's youtube video.

    • Thank you mate @WalterBiH for the detailed write up!
I was able to follow above instructions and now have the WolfLauncher active.
Have disabled updates etc as above.
Now nothing seems to work? 😂😂
I must be missing some crucial steps after this
Eg: Prime Video it shipped with needs update to launch, but can't update it.
Kayo is not found, so tried side loading. But as soon as I launch it, it complains there is no play store/not up to date and closes.

What do you do after you have bypassed Amazon's launcher and done above steps for normal usage?

      • :)
I had the same issue with Prime. What I did is side-loaded the latest version from FireTV 2nd gen Cube Firmware & Stock Apps.

I'm guessing you are still blocking all those URLs and that's why the Amazon App Store is not working. Now that you've disabled updates through the Launcher Manager, you can safely relax those URL blocks. Experiment to see what works.

I have Kayo installed (no subscription - just to watch freebie F1 Qualifying) and the version in Amazon store is rubbish. On 4k Max v2 it stutters and locks up every 5 - 10 minutes. Kayo used to work fine on Gen 1 sticks, but I still have to confirm this on my Gen 1 in the other room.

  • Still available for $59 if you are eligible for a free 30 day Prime trial.

  • Due to the costs of MiniPCs, I am wondering though if it's time to move back to XBMC given all the updates and intentionsl incompatibilities that are going on in the streaming industry?

    • What do you do about remote control? Is it via an app on your phone, or can you buy remotes for this?

      • +1

You can get remotes off aliexpress / ebay. I am wondering if going back to XBMC / Kodi may give a smoother experience.

  • Did anyone else find that their Firestick stopped working when AMS was down?

    • +1

i saw reddit posts about that problem occurring

  • From what I understand, this would be fine to use if all I need is something for running Plex and for wifey to use for NBA League Pass etc?

  • I want to buy 3, but it doesn’t apply a discount for more than one

  • This or a xiaomi box or a google streamer
    ?

    • Google Streamer is good but not at this price.

    • I also have Mi Box S gen 3. Bought it when Amazon started locking down Firesticks
I personally found Firestick remote much better. Performance wise very similar (even though Firestick hardware is superior), but I don't have 4k TV. Tested both using Wolflauncher, so both pretty snappy and identical UI. I'd buy whichever is cheaper.

Long term Mi Box will probably be more flexible, but with the Sep 25 exploit, I'm back to using Firestick (for now).

I've never had a fire stick but just got one via this deal. Unplugged router internet cable during set up and managed to bypass the software update. Logged into profile, Installed downloader app, then launcher app, then projectivy(sp?) for custom launcher. Smart tube and jellyfin working. About 1 hour effort

    • How were you able to download the downloader app? It does not let me when I block URLs.

      • I have no problem with downloader app, SmartTube, Stremio after updated and didn't block any URLs.

      • DIdn't block URLs. Just unblock them once you're in and do the steps, then you can disable auto updates

        • Isn't only the new Vega OS model won't allow sideloading?

          • @superforever: I think so, but I also think the new versions stop admin access workaround, also preventing possibly using other launchers. I'm not an expert I just pretend to be

          • @superforever: Yeh, as far as I know and it's not so much that it won't allow sideloading but that its their own flavour of Linux, not Android so you can't run all the usual apps.

  • Just in time, thx OP!

  • Has anyone successfully used this with the new updates and sideloading? Going to attempt it in the next few days but need to stop the updates taking place
