Ice Cubes in The Freezer Taste Weird

What could possibly be causing the ice in my freezer to have a weird taste. I have cleaned the tray thoroughly! Still tastes strange!

    Maybe the water?

    • Its filtered:(
The filter has also been changed lately as well.

  • How long have the ice cubes been in there?

Sometimes food odour may affect the taste of ice as water absorbs gas inside the freezer. If you have unwrapped food then try to wrap it up nicely.

Yes, this - it is so common with ice. Either get ice trays with lids or if you have a turnstile type ice tray, transfer the frozen ice to a ziplock bag asap.

    • This, especially if you have seafood in the freezer

    • Yeah my ice kept coming out tasting like garlic bread so ended up googling 'best ice cube trays' (lol) and got the OXO Good Grips Ice Cube Tray (voted best ice cube tray by Wirecutter in 2018) which has a lid and haven't had any issues with funny tasting ice since.

Probably your tongue. Where has it been lately?

You have a male flat mate?

      Maybe there's an honest explanation.
Like he planned on giving them to his lesbian friend, although I think it would be quite discomfortable to insert them while they're still frozen.

      • err… what?

you've just crossed the line! haha ^_^

  • Not too sure what you two above guys are on about….
The ice is a fresh batch. Skyripper I will look into that!

  • Someone is trying to poison you.

  • What do they taste like?

And what colour are they? If they are yellow I would steer clear of them.

  • Change tray?

  • Buy ice cube bags

Try a new batch and put it inside a new/clean plastic bag. Taste the ice. Then do another batch without the plastic bag. Isolate the problem areas.

  • I had the same problem and all food in my freezer is covered. I have the plastic turn style trays that came with the freezer so are uncovered.

Dump the ice and rinse the trays for about a minute each under the hottest running water you can get out of your kitchen tap. Be careful you don’t burn yourself. Hold one corner and hold the tray at a 45 degree angle, swapping ends.

After that rinse in cold water from the tap until room temp again and make more ice.

Make ice more often, dumping it if you haven’t used after a few weeks. I found washing them up normally did nothing to get the smell out of the plastic, and this seems to work. The same trick works with plastic water bottles.

Storing in a ziplock bag works better too

  • Please provide a MS Paint diagram explaining how they taste.

  • Get a new ice tray

  • I've had these for year and love them - https://www.tupperware.com.au/products/8754/CoolCubes

Bought my mum a set as I was sick of tasting meat in my water when I was at her place.

  • Washing will not work, the plastic pores trap the smelly.

Bicarb soda, add water make paste. Smear it all over the tray, let it sit for long time. Rinse, repeat if required.

Spread a thin layer of bicarb powder on a large plate. Place it in fridge and freezer. This will absorb smelly. Change bi-weekly until smell is gone.

  • Water absorbs odour…. it is something in your fridge emitting this odour.

Take everything out and sponge down the entire fridge with warm water and detergent. then wash all the shelves in the sink.

  • Throw out plastic trays and get stainless steel

  • Thanks for all of the comments. Will be getting stuck into cleaning it all using your tips and tricks. Thanks everyone

  • Was probably the blood from the half thawed raw chicken you threw in there after shopping

  • I have silicone trays, and mine taste like rubber

so I just add more vodka until I don;t taste the rubber anymore :)

    • Get stainless steel.
