Sony X8000G Power/Restarting Issue - Sony Customer Care Says Its "Normal"

I purchased the 65 inch Sony X8000G last year from TheGoodGuys and it has been working fine till last week. Now, when I use the remote to switch on the TV, it takes about a minute for the LED light under the Sony logo to come on and then the TV restarts (it does not simply wake up from sleep/standby). The whole process takes about 2.5-3 minutes till I can actually access any apps or watch something on the TV.
I called up Sony customer care and apparently, the latest update puts the TV into a state of "Deep Sleep" few minutes after it is powered off and powering it on after that will always restart the TV. This behavior is apparently "normal" and the TVs in their warehouse also now behave this way. I call bull****! There is no way people are ok with waiting 3 minutes each time they want to access their TV. And you dont even know if the TV is powering on because the LED light under the TV does not come on for almost a minute.

I looked this issue up online and there seem to be many users having the same issue across various models of Bravia TV. Can somebody else here with the same TV model verify if this is behavior is "Normal"

Update: Sony has sent out a technician to fix the issue. He came over with a software update in a USB stick. Apparently the update is available for download on the sony website but it does not get pushed out as an automatic update to the TVs. Issue seems fixed now.

    Does it really matter though?
    A couple of minutes.

If the behaviour is being reported by multiple users in different forums, then it would indeed appear to be the new 'normal' behaviour.

Of course it matters! 3 min to turn a TV that cost nearly 2k when purchased?! And if a person not used to this behavior uses the remote to turn the TV on, he (like me) would think the remote batteries are dead and be swapping batteries out when suddenly the TV comes on :-/

Seems unacceptable to me. It's a major fault that would result in you not buying the TV had you knew about it. My 10 year old Sony Bravia turns on in 3 seconds.

Based on my experience after owning….like all Sony Television.

Those android OS LCD/LED tvs will run into lag problems after using it for a while.

I would recommend resetting/initialize to clear all the apps/cache/etc that you have installed/stored.
    Usually worked for me.

How do I reset my Sony Bravia TV?
If you can operate the Home menu screen with the remote control
Press the HOME button on the remote control.
    Select Settings.
    Select System Settings.
    Select Customer Support.
    Select Factory Settings.
    Select OK.

*Do not install junk in there except for your video streaming apps netflix/amazon prime/stan/Disney+

    • They made me do a factory reset by holding down the power and volume down buttons, which I hear triggers a complete reset of the hardware. Tried it 2 times with my OLED and didnt help resolving the issue.

      • I would video record the whole process and just send to Sony and ask for a tech to fix it or just change for a new TV if they have no solution after the tech visit.

        • They asked me to do it the 3rd time and I refused and forced them to send a technician.

I have only so much patience to sit there and move the tv around and do all the things that they want me to!

        • Already did all that. Even recorded a video and sent it to Sony. Waiting on a reply from them. And all I have installed on the TV is Prime Video and Plex

  • I just got a brand new x9500G, it is super quick both in startups and restarts. Menu and all things TV, EPG, ect.
Is the firmware up to date? Is Android at it's latest also?
A quick search yielded this on the UK forum

Hey mate, I had the same issue with my Sony KD65A8F Oled Tv (Frustrating I tell ya!) and when I rang Sony, they blamed it on the latest software update. They forced me to do multiple factory resets and none of that worked.

I hit back saying my Sony 49" LED has the same android update and works completely fine with no restarting issues.

They sent a technician from TSS electronics whom they outsource to and he had a look at both the TVs and admitted that some of the F and G series models were affected by the latest software update.

He installed a custom version of the same Android OS from a USB drive on both my tvs (apparently that is the TO BE released version) and I have had no issues with the Oled tv since then!

Get them to send a technician and update the OS via the USB drive and if it doesnt work, get them to replace it (I came across multiple online forums where the OS update didnt work and Sony ended up replacing it with a new tv)

      • custom version of the same Android OS from a USB drive*

lol we need a copy of that soft.

      • Thats exactly what I told him (just in case :P )

    • they replaced it with a new TV of the same model?

      • With the online forums, some of them have been replaced with new mode because they stopped manufacturing the okder ones

    • Same problem on my E series

  • I'd just call TGG explain the issue & ask if you can return it for credit or choose another TV

This is normal but you should be able to disable it in the settings. This is just to ensure that your device consumes the least amount of energy.
If the setting is disabled then your TV firmware might be courrupted as it might be trying to install the firmware everytime the TV is booting.

    • No its not. It is already disabled in the settings. It was never enabled and I triple checked after this issue started coming up. And it can't possibly install firmware in under 3 minutes. Its following the usual android TV "restart" process.

      • It could be a small patch like 20mb for security patching or driver updates. Is the LED at the bottom flashing or do you see any network traffic happening on that IP using wireshark?

        • The LED comes on only after 1 min but it doesnt flash. No network traffic till the TV is close to being fully booted up when I look at the packet inspection details in my Unifi Controller

  • Your sale is with TGG.
Go and complain to them and start quoting the ACL.
