Can anyone explain what this app does in simple terms

    • -6

It plays several types of video and music files, what is there not to understand?

    • +9

Apple's internal video/music player only supports limited number of formats. If you want to play videos/audios not supported by the internal player, you need a different player.

There are a few players around. VLCPlayer used to be one of them (and was free). However, due to license agreement (VLC uses a free license or some form of GNU free license and Apple does not allow such type of software licensing for Apple iOS apps), Apple rejected VLCPlayer.

Most of these players on iOS aren't free.

        nice explanation mate, thanks.

The gist is right, although VLC was happily available for 2 months in the app store and it was actually an open source advocate who had VLC yanked:

One of the programmers who contributed to the original VLC code, Rémi Denis-Courmont, complained about having the open source software made available without the normal trappings of open source, eg, the source code, DRM free, and the licence.

He filed a copyright complaint and the result was that Apple "regretfully" removed VLC. So, a piece of GPL software remains pure and we suffer as a result. If no one had filed legal action, VLC would still be there and receiving updates.

CineX player is a good one for ipad users

    • Thanks, I'll check it out.

  • +2

please mention in the header that this is the iphone version. there is no ipad version yet.

Requirements: Compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation), and iPad. Requires iOS 4.0 or later.

      Hence, universal

      • Nope, it isn't a Universal build.

        • -5

          Yes it is.

        • compatible does not mean "universal binary" it means you can blow up the iPhone app on an iPad and it'll work but it'll look shit compared to a real iPad app

      • +1

According to the iTunes / Requirements section - Compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPoad touch and iPad.

I noticed it is listed as an iPhone app. It is rather confusing. I don't have an iPad so… dunno what the correct answer is.

I think iPad has a facility to run iPhone apps (assuming the app. allows it).

Could anyone who has an iPad try it out and report back? It is a free app.

        • +1

Universal app means it will run natively on both ipad and iphone without any resize.
This app actually run in ipad using iphone resolution. It does not fit the whole ipad screen. Hence, this is not a universal build.

How do I vote my comments down?

  • +2

This is definitely not a universal app. It will have a plus sign on the app in itunes if it is a universal app.
This app will work in ipad but it will look awful.

    • +1

Yeah, I just downloaded it to my iPad to check it out for y'all, is just an iPhone app. You can zoom the app, but it looks like rubbish.

  • +2

Damnit, this isn't compatible with my iPod Touch 3rd gen 8gb. Guess it's because the 8gb model still uses the same specs as the 2nd gen. I'll still give this a +ve though becuase it's a great deal.

    Bummer bummer bummer

  • Oh well, it's not universal/native, lets hope the developer later releases an update so we don't have to purchase a new app just for the iPad.

  • -1

as i already mentioned this is not ipad compatible

    • -1

"Yeah, I just downloaded it to my iPad to check it out for y'all, is just an iPhone app. You can zoom the app, but it looks like rubbish."

      What don't you understand?

      • I think he understands that part but You just don't understand his comment

Just to emphasise- works on iPad but doesnt look good-kind of an issue when running an app designed for iphones on the ipad (i think all apps from the iphone work on the ipad).

HOWEVER it is a very big issue when trying to watch iphone resolution videos on an ipad (watching videos is one the only purposes of this app)

        Sorry for offence taken

        • +2

I don't think the dude has a clue what a universal app is.

For those with a jailbroken ipad grab retinapad, makes those pesky iphone apps look heaps better…no wonder apple does not do something like this as no one would buy the native apps.

        • -5

I think some people don't know how to write in English. I'm not here to interpret poor English. Just because it isn't suitable for the aspect ratio and resolution of the iPad it doesn't mean the app is incompatible with the iPad, it means it's not universal. It's for free and if you have a problem with that, go elsewhere.

I comment "Oh well, it's not universal/native, lets hope the developer later releases an update so we don't have to purchase a new app just for the iPad." and then afterwards someone comments "as i already mentioned this is not ipad compatible". Does some people here have reading issues….?

        • +5

          LOL - grammar nazi fail!

OP, You write: I think some people don't know how to write in English

But then finish with: Does some people here have reading issues….

What you're after is: Do some people…

          <<insert facepalm moment here>>

And it's Sunday, chill out champ, some people just don't get it so let them comment away to glory. There's already enough comments saying yes it works on iPad but not in native resolution.

Here, watch this, everyone feels better after "it" :)

  • Apart from all this, does it require copying your files through itunes and storing them on your device? It doesn't seem to mention SMB or anything.

I use TIOD which seems to work quite well for streaming from a NAS for movies and pics.

    • I can't find TIOD on the App Store. Does that mean it is an app that requires jailbreaking?

thanks, fair enough. I think I was expecting an audio app rather than a file transfer app. Just tried it and it's nice :)

        • No worries, I love using lmgtfy, so don't take offense to it ;)

        • [Double Post]

        • +1

          lmgtfy ftw :)

  • I like this. Even has flac support. + from me.

  • Front page on my third post, quite happy! :D

  • There are no iPad players out yet, just the iPhone versions at time being.

  • no longer free

    • i dont think it deserve a neg just because the deal is expired.

      • fair point

        • For your pleasure you can neg my comments.

  • cant believe i missed this, so upset i almost negged this deal! but didnt (my own damn fault) :)

    • it's still free!
I've just downloaded it. Just type 'amyplayer' into the search box in iTunes and download the free one!

  • It hasn't expired yet!
I just searched for 'Anyplayer' it said free, so i downloaded it :)

Dunno whats happening, but when i clicked the link here, it said free, but then when i clicked 'view in iTunes' it said $1.99..

But a simple search found the same item, but free.. I'm never sure how or why this happens, but this has worked many-a-time before. (Must be something to do with the cusp of it returning to a paid version??)

  • just did a search for it and it is showing as $2.99 in the apps store

    • It is still $2.99 in the Australian Store

      • now its free on the Aus store

  • Hey guys, thanks for all the positives, it makes me feel like I helped you guys out.

  • Can I use this for media playback with my android T.V. Smartbox?
