How do these garages make money?

I was looking at Oil on sale 5L, $26 plus an Oil filter alone $12 and that's $48.

Most these Groupons are $49-65

Some are larger garages, and have really good reviews. I was going to do it myself, however for the price it's probably worth it.

I understand, they'll probably try upsell other things I may or may not potentially need. Injection cleans, Air filters etc

Thanks

  • This is just the first one that I found

Oil filter change with up to 4L of oil
    Tyre pressure and condition check
    Lube application for door detents
Lighting levels, diff and gearbox check
    Fuel and brake hose check
Uni joints and drive shafts check
    Exhaust condition and leaks check
    F&R shocks check
    Steering joints wear check
    Fluid and oil leaks check
    Greasing
    Fluid level checks
    Air conditioning gas level check
Fuel, coolant, hose and radiator condition check
Drive belts tension and condition check
    Oil and coolant leak check
    Wiper blade condition check
    Brake inspection and handbrake adjustment
System scanning, resetting faulty codes and a written report
Pristine car wash including inside & out wash / vacuum / tyre shine / wipe down dash and inside of the car / windows cleaned

Thats a lot of checking for $79 - probably take them 30mins per car as well. The long list makes it look like theyre doing a lot, when really theyre not. Its not a full logbook service

Its worth noting that service centres would buy their oil in drums and get it at a much reduced rate than you would buy from supercheap etc. And they would definitely get a lot of upsells from it - your coolant (or xyz) level is low, its only x to refill.

Then its the follow on from some customers of theyve been there so will go back as well

    • up to 4l of oil

Most modern cars take more than 4l of engine oil. I'm guessing there will be a charge for "overage"

Most of that other stuff is just look at it while you're waiting for the oil to drain.

The "aircon gas level"one is a bit of bullshit. They would need to plug gauges in for that.

And I'm banking 100% on there being massive upsells on everything. From "worn brakes" to "new wiper blades" and all being quoted at extortionist rates. It's basically a car wash with an engine oil and filter change. It's better than nothing… but only just. And some minor services through a dealer for most makes would only be about this level of service anyway.

      I think the old adage stands true here;

You get what you pay for.

They're probably betting on the fact that they will find defects or things that need to be 'fixed' and that the customer will probably agree considering the car is already up on the hoist or whatever.

    Everyone's gotta make $$ somehow

    Avoid at all cost.

  • Lube Mobile tried to up-sell, so did Ford tho.

Injector cleaning, Lube wanted like $140 for a Air Filter and I went and bought one for $22 and did it in 5 minutes.
He tried to tell me my Coolant was dirty, and I'm like the Coolant recycles and its bright :/. He then said but they're work is covered incase my engine blows up :/ 😬😂

I'm like, just the basic log book service.

My next service is just basically a basic service, the B service which is larger I would bring into Ford.

Just wanted to see if anyone has gone through and used one? Most of them have really good reviews, as now everyone seems to leave positive & negative. I wouldn't use a small garage, as mentioned quite a few larger garages(ABS, Midas).

    Thanks for the feedback.
