(TRS - Cairns Airport?) Sydney -> Cairns -> Osaka Japan

Hello, i will probably be flying from Sydney 6:10 am -> 4 hours 45 minutes wait -> Cairns 1:00 pm -> Osaka (Japan) and I need to claim TRS. I assume I'm not allowed to complete TRS in Sydney? Are there typically long lines in Cairns for TRS (I suppose there is probably less traveller at the moment, so maybe this doubtful). Is this normally plenty of time or will I need to rush? Thanks in advance.

  • I would not be worried with such a long gap.

  • Nah. Only long queue is at check-in at Cairns. TRS desk is pretty quick.

    • Especially now PRC presence is limited

  • Usually very quick. Never had more than 3-4 people in line ahead of me in Cairns.

  • Is your flight from Sydney to Cairns via domestic or international (stop-over)?

If international, then you can claim in Sydney despite being stopped over in Cairns. I'm not sure where the TRS office is at Cairns, but I'd assume (if it's like other airports) it's outside of the terminal you would be stopped-over at. As such, you would potentially need to exit the terminal and then re-enter via Customs etc.

If you're catching a domestic flight to Cairns and then international from there, then yes, you could TRS at Cairns as I assume it is there you could be going through Customs.

All this is on the assumption that the TRS office is outside of the terminal gates at Cairns.
