GTX 1070 FE

im curious for those who have this gpu, did you overclock it and if you did what did you set it at? but more importantly what was your model set at when you first recieved it? im wondering if its worth doing just to squeeze out a few extra fps with the downside being it running hotter and shortening its lifespan. i do plan on moving on to a 2070 super down the line but i want to get the most out of current gpu thats on its way here in a few weeks first. keeping in mind the only two games i will be playing using the 1070FE are not demanding at all requiring only a 760gpu.

Every chip is different. Silicon lottery is a thing. Just overclock it, monitor temps and find what is stable.

I had a 1070 and overclocked it - because there's no reason to not overclock.

Overclocking doesn't lower the cards lifespan to any degree that's going to matter and it gives you higher performance for no extra money. Also GPU overclocking is now automatic if you choose so no reason at all to not overclock at least that.

This might surprise you but the claimed (over)clock speed and the offset that you set when overclocking aren't actually a reflection of the cards true speed. The speed is actually controlled by an algorithm known as GPU Boost which typically sets the speed higher than what is claimed.

Typically contemporary Nvidia GPUs will boost to 1900 - 2100Mhz under air cooling. Memory is more fickle and I cannot recall what a "typical" memory overclock is for Pascal cards although the 20 series cards typically allow large mem overclocks.

You can see the actual speed using various utilities, I use GPU-Z. Along with speeds you will notice a variable called Perfcap which indicates the reason the card is throttling - it's not always temps, it can be voltage, power or one other thing that I cannot recall right now.

    • thanks for all the info, as far has programs used for overclocking im guessing msi afterburner is the best option?

EVGA X1 Precision works as well.

  • Just recently overclocked my GTX1060 for the first time. As long as you don't increase the voltage, which apparently is hard to do on the 10 series, you'll be fine.

Using msi afterburner, do automatic overclocking for the core and then manually overclock the memory. If you have Samsung memory die it will overclock 600-1000 MHz, if not maybe less than 200MHz.

    • mines has the samsung memory.

  • you won't be able to hit very good core overclocks since the FE cooler is inferior to custom coolers and the nvidia has put in hard thermal constraints that limit core clocks at high temps, and you can't change this. you'll have to water cool it or install a custom cooler for max overclock - but this is not worth it.

the real nice thing with the 1070 FE is you're guaranteed samsung memory which overclocks the best, miners were doing 9000mhz+ easy(divide by 4 for number to dial in), and this will give you a nice boost with very little extra power use

  • its ok has i dont see myself going for insane fps numbers. theres only two games im after. american truck sim and euro truck sim. if i see myself expanding to newer more demanding games i plan on upgrading to a 2070 super..but for now my xbox one x has me covered. the two pc games only require a 760gpu so im thinking the 1070 can handle things without stressing itself much. ive got two 140mm noctua fans for intake, factory exhaust fan towards back, and two noctua 120mm fans on top for exhaust, and noctua cpu fan..so hoping these guys can do a decent job of maintaining temps in the case.
