Should I Get nbn or Go with 4G/5G Mobile?

Time has come for me to start choosing a NBN internet provider or go with 4G/5G as my main internet.
Is NBN worth it? Which providers are best?

  • Depends on how much data you use.

  • Can you get Optus 5g home broadband?

Competition is extremely strong in this category.

  • My adsl 2+ line is due for disconnection. I get by with 100gb per month which sets me back approx $40 per month, the closest package is almost double $70 per month with the same ISP!

Any recommendations for affordable ISPs? 100gb / month was fine for me and the adsl2+ speed was surprisingly good for streaming too!

    • 25Mbps 100GB $60 @ Aussie Broadband with no contract.
      50Mbps unlimited $60 @ Internode with a 6 month contract.

Belong is $55 a month and unlimited.

    • TPG has a 100gb plan, but it’s 50gb anytime and 50gb from 2am to 8.30am. For $50.

If you can do the heavy downloading when you wake up until 8.30 and leave the casual internet surfing during all other times you might find it ok.

If you go past the 50gb limit off or on peak, it’s shaped to a slow speed, but continue to get net.

  • Definitely maybe

  • What kind of nbn? FTTN, FTTB, FTTC, FTTP or HFC?

    • FTTN, FTTB, FTTC, FTTP or HFC?

      JFC.

The Government held an enquiry in 1989 (ninteteen eighty nine) before the rollout of the WWW or what most people think of as "the internet".

The enquiry concluded that Australia needed a national FTTP network in order to take advantage of the internet.

So before "the internet" the Government knew it needed a national FTTP network.

Or what some people call "Labor's version of the NBN".

Howard sold Telecom four years later in 1993.

Then Liberal morons decided to go with the current arrangement in exchange for Telstra getting 60 billion dollars by voting Turdbull some 25 years after the Government worked out if needed FTTP before the internet even began for most people.

  • In my experience, HFC cable internet from Optus / Telstra was far more reliable than the half-baked HFC-fibre mix that is now the only option in most urban areas. Extended dropouts (30min to 12hrs), frequent slowdowns (both on and off peak, 90+Mbps down to <1Mbps), long pingtimes, etc, etc. All of which was rarely an issue with our cable internet.

We will be switching to 5G when I move home, in a few months — can't say whether the speed is more reliable, but I don't expect it to be any worse! 😒

How long is a piece of string? ie how much data do you need/use.

  • Yes.

Wait for 7G. It will blow NBN and 4/5G out of Australia.
