NBN HFC Connection - Help me find WAN router

Hey Guys,

Tried searching other forums as well as OZbargain, couldnt find exact advice i am looking for.

I am getting NBN HFC connection for my 2 bedroom apartment(50mbps connection - Superloop). As the apartment isnt that big, so wifi coverage isnt that big of a concern.

Can someone recommend a good wifi router without breaking the bank($50-$150)? Might extend the budget if there is a really good router cross that range.

Will need it for gaming(Consoles), streaming and browsing!

  • If you are getting NBN the providers usually give you a free router.

    • Just confirmed with Superloop, none provided!

      Have to get my own

      • That sucks. Must have been a common thing when I signed up last year but not now.

If you are dead set on going with Superloop, make sure you sign up through this promo link: https://superloop.com/adl500/

        • Deal ends today. Be quick :)

        • Yeah already signed up actually, as it was the cheapest i could find!

  • using Google Wifi router, working fine and it is within your budget.

      Thanks will start searching!

Definitely go for this. You should be able to get a barely used 2nd hand one for $20 from Gumtree or ebay. They are great. I have one and for my HFC connection and I highly recommend it. There's lots of info about it on Whirlpool including a link to a manual. And it's just plug and play so extremely easy to setup and get going. Just connect a LAN cable from the NBNco modem to the DJA0230 modem/router and that's it.

        • Thanks will start searching!

Netcomm NF18 plenty floating around gumtree for cheap.

    • I'm using one of these. Cheap and basic but does the job.

      • WIll try and find these around! Thanks

        • Telstra Smart Modem DJA0230 has better wifi & 4G backup.

          • @Twix: Does the 4G fail over work if you're not actually with Telstra?

            • @apsilon: Telstra 4G backup works doesn't matter which ISP your with. Telstra cap the speed to ADSL like speed of 6Mbps download. BYO sim to get fast speeds.

              • @Twix: Interesting. So you could buy one of these, not sign up to an ISP at all and just use the Telstra 4G for free if you didn't mind the restricted speed.

                • @apsilon: Yeah but it's really only usable for browsing and email.

Get a Telstra Gateway Max (NetGear C6300BD) from Gumtree — plenty of them around for $10-$30, as people are moving from BigPoind cable to NBN. It has AC1900. Firmware locked to Telstra but it's fine since you are only going to use the WAN port.

    • Sounds cheap! The superloop guy would need to access the setting i guess from what i have been told to work properly with Superloop. Would that be possible with this?

      • Telstra & Superloop use IPoE automatic connection on the nbn. Superloop support doesn't need to do anything.

    • i have one of this, unless you're on telstra cable i'd recommend get just a proper router only. Few issue with it, I think one of the annoying thing is it will broadcast its own fon wi-fi thingy so someone with that account can actually leaching on your bandwith, back when i was on telstra cable I couldn't figure how to disable it so end up turning off wifi from it altogether and use a dedicate router. Back 3+ years ago it was great when AC1900 was sort of new tech and you could get it for free from them but not so much now. It's interface is very retricted too so if you want to do some fancy stuff like port-forwarding or openvpn then forget about it. Even assigning IP is a pain because sometimes it failed to do what've been told (yes, I'm serious).

I still laugh at people trying to flop them off for $50+ every now and then, I wouldn't pay for it, actually I still have one sitting in the garage if OP want it feel free to come around.

      • Yes that Telstra Air / Fon thing can be a bother, even when the router is not connected to Telstra network. I too have a few NetGear C6300BD & CG3100D lying around as friends and family have been throwing them out. Those are perfectly fine devices, and too bad that we can't just flush a generic firmware on it.

      • haha thats what my worry is with those. Cant find a good cheap router recommendation anywhere to be honest.

Gonna search gumtree and facebook marketplace!

        • You can turn off Telstra Air on the newer Telstra routers.

  • if you're one hfc then you're suppose to get a router (Arris CM8200) from NBN and just plug a WAN port from any router into the UNID1 port of the Arris and it should work (you can even connect your pc directly to that port). Any router with WAN port should work, solid one is the ASUS rt68u that's been recommended every now and then, can be had for around $100 mark. If you're desperate just hit gumtree to see any guys want to offload their old router gear, can still get decent one for less thatn $50, maybe $20 lol. I have a few spares that can do AC1750, AC1900 that can give you for free if you're nearby.

    • nbn Arris CM8200b is a cable modem and not a router. Connecting your PC to the nbn Arris CM8200b is for temporarily testing router problems.

    • Thanks for writing it all down, ASUS rt68u seems to be around $200(cheapest i could find but will check second hand as well). I am gonna get on gumtree and facebook marketplace to see if i find anything.

      I am South Brisbane btw.

  • I'd suggest a ASUS RT-AC58U

    • Thanks would give it a look.

  • I'm in a similar boat to OP, might search these Telstra models.

    • I am thinking of staying away from Telstra wifi as they are locked firmware and might pose problem when you are trying to fiddle around with settings. But not clear on this!

      • You can't change to a custom DNS provider like Cloudflare on Telstra Smart Modem. You have to use your ISPs DNS or change the DNS on each device. Telstra VoIP is locked.

          • @alvian: Yeah if you know how to you can hack them. With stock firmware there are some limitations.

            • @Twix: @twix you seem to know a lot about these things! I am still trying to buy a second hand router.

Would you have any idea how Netcomm n300 wifi gigabit router is for $30?

              • @morpheous: I wouldn't be buying a wireless N router in 2020. If you don't want the Telstra Smart Modem look for a TP-Link wireless AC router.

                • @Twix: I am finding very limited options unfortunately!

I am looking for Telstra Smart Modem and TP link as well now.

I am guessing Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 would work the same?

Also would you recommend TP link AC 750 wireless dual band Router?

Have removed the N router from my list!

                  • @morpheous: Have you had a look on Facebook market place?

Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 would be fine and has wireless AC.

                    • @Twix: Yeah was taking a look at both gumtree and Facebook marketplace but they are pretty far away.

If the TP link AC 750 not that good I think I would make the sacrifice and drive a little far away for it.

                      What do you reckon?

                      • @morpheous: Go for a drive or pay an extra $10 for delivery.

                        • @Twix: Ok paid $40 and got the modem Gen 2 and travel adaptor.

I am guessing it would be fairly simple to setup?

It comes with a pre set WiFi name and password, which I am guessing can be changed? And there is a Sim inside the smart modem as well.

Really appreciate your help on this.

                          • @morpheous: It should be plug & play. Yeah you can change the wifi name & password. The SIM card is for the 4G backup.

                            • +1

@Twix: That sounds awesome! Thanks again mate.

I am guessing I won't need the travel adaptor

                              • @morpheous: Hey unrelated to your post here, just curious as to what ended up happening with your car and the concrete spill.

Edit: on your topic, I do recommend the Asus modem router here https://www.asus.com/Networking-IoT-Servers/Modem-Routers/Al…

Can get it used for $100 on gumtree facebook, reliable solid modem router with excellent wifi coverage.

                                • @Elitebhy: Haha that was such a long time ago, but for what it's worth the construction firm ended up paying for it. Just had to drive the car to a professional detailing shop.

Thanks for the tip on the router.
