Thoughts on VDSL2 Vs nbn in Canberra?

Hi all,

Just moved to Canberra city and have signed up for a non-lock in contract with Aussie BB which appears to be an alright price with good support. A friend told me yesterday about the existing VDSL2 infrastructure that can be just as fast for about half the price. I've only looked into iiNet's plans and they have listed typical evening speeds of 74 Mb/s for $40/month (first 12 months) which seems almost too good to be true.
Just seeing what experience you guys have had with VDSL2 and whether I should bother switching over?

Cheers.

  • What technology is AussieBB providing NBN service through?

    • It'll be FTTN

      • Which uses VDSL2. Thoughts on VDSL2 vs VDSL2?

Do you mean to ask iiNet's broadband network vs National Broadband Network?

So go for a walk down the street and try to work out the distance of copper from Node to home for each provider.
Assuming they're within 50-100m of being similar or iiNet's node is closer, go for iiNet otherwise, you need to determine how much you're willing to pay for speed.
Once you go past around 400-500m line length attainable speeds plummet, so factor that into your calculations.

Dunno if iiNet are using Vectoring… If they're not, then NBN might get you better speeds assuming everything else being close to equal.

End result is that FttN is a shitshow. One persons' experience can differ markedly from another persons' experience, even when they're next door neighbors. It all depends on the quality of your particular copper pair.

        • A good suggestion, thanks! I'll go have a walk around this afternoon and make the call.

          • @Gravy Train: Copper cabling doesn't always take the shortest path and can go the long way around the block to the node. Try both services.

@Twix: Agreed, but you can make educated guesses by looking at the pits.

If you can get on iinet's VDSL2, do it.

  • I didn't realise that there were plans that offered VDSL2 at half the price of NBN connections?! That's pretty good.

Only in Canberra and Geelong I think.

A few years ago I was on iiNet's VDSL2 network in Turner ACT and got a consistent 30mbps all the time. At the time, iiNet was promising 50-80mbps speeds, but then lowered their promise to 20-80mbps. I was regularly asking iiNet to investigate why the speeds were so much lower than advertised, but their troubleshooting didn't produce any improvements.

When I switched to NBN 100/40 (FTTN), my speeds magically increased to 80mbps. Having said that, the $39/month offer is an absolute bargain and definitely worth it if you're willing to take the risk of potentially slower speeds.

    • Am in Turner now myself so this is a huge help, cheers!

      • Commenting for future people reading however I have lived in Turner for the past two years on iiNet's VDSL2+ plan and am consistently achieving speeds of 85+ mbps.
