TCL Plex Owners, Are You Pleased with Your New Phones?

Just a question to all those who snagged a $249 TCL plex during the JB clearance on them.

A couple of weeks in, are you pleased with your purchases?

What did you upgrade from/to, and what kind of battery life and screen time are you getting day to day?

Any issues/things not working? (looking at you android auto!)

Camera, happy with it?

Comments

  • Yes love it. Upgraded from the lg G4.

Really enjoying the face unlock. Very quick and painless albeit less secure.

Camera is great. No issues. Aside from the annoying "taken by Plex" watermark logo on the bottom left (?) Side

the watermark can be removed in the settings.

      • thanks
        hows your expeirence?

Didn't get one, but have the option to buy a sealed unopened one with the receipt for their cost price.

Currently using an S9+ (and have an old S8) but battery life isn't as good as I'd like, and S10e battery life was even worse (drawback to physically small handsets I guess!)

Surprised it's an upgrade from an iphone 8 plus, that's good news if it is! (personally, I'd consider any android an upgrade from an iphone as I hate my works apple, but it's a personal choice!) :)

  • Yes, really liking it. Upgraded from iPhone 8 plus.

    • Wait, it's an upgrade from an iPhone 8 Plus?

Now I kinda wish I bought it, even though I have no use for another right phone now

For me quite a bit apart from the OS/software such as hardware - minimal bezel screen with to notch in the middle (on the left corner instead), very good battery life, quick charge times, dual sim, overall phone performance such as app launch speeds multi-tasking split-screen (using multiple apps in small windows at once on the one screen) etc.

        • What battery life do you get in a day and what use is normal for you? I never make it past 4pm if I use my phone a lot and have to charge it at least once if not twice as screen on times are poor in general)

          • @seraphim2017: Getting about 6 hours screen on time. Does last me about a day and half with average use. If I use it a lot, I easily get a full day with around 20% remaining.

This is a very subjective question to answer though sorry as it depends on a lot of conditions such as software, hardware, usage etc.

With my previous iPhone I would end up having 20% by 4pm with medium use so a major improvement for me with the TCL.

          • @seraphim2017: If I use it for GPS return journey for work (1.5 hrs max), couple of calls during the day, whatsapp, email, watch about an hour of netflix I get pretty close to 10% left at night.

If I play games however, maybe only 5-6 hours before I need to charge?

If I use it for GPS return journey for work

For traffic updates or you just forget where you live and how to get there?

              • @Muzeeb: Traffic updates and going into side streets to try and get around the jam.

                Gotta love Melbourne traffic.

  • I really like it but I miss the notification LED. Also I can't work out how to get the messaging app icons to indicate that there is a new message.
Btw, when is Android 10 coming to Australian Plex owners? Seems like its already rolled out in other regions, but nothing for us.

  • I "upgraded" from a S10+ which my wife took.

Have to say I am loving it, even the photos look great, can't really feel any real difference over the S10+.

Even watching Netflix is great if I use earphones, the single speaker is great but can get covered if you are holding it.

Only thing I HATE is the "Ding" you hear when you plug in a charger. Only way to mute seems to be putting the phone on silent.

  • A friend of mine bought one when they were on sale at JB HIFI and after playing around with it recently I decided I had to have one too. Unfortunately I had to pay $200 more than he did but I still reckon for the money it is a really decent phone. I was impressed with the camera especially and I liked the fact that the UI isn't overpowering like some manufacturer's. Not many around anymore, they may become collector's items LOL

  • have been using it for last week or so was using S8+ prior to this and i find the phone to be good but i have just noticed today that it doesn't work with android auto on my sony XAV AX5000. Havent had much time to TS but tried to plug and unplug few times it either just didn't work or said unsupported device or when it did detect it in rare occasion it was just sitting on blank screen before the map opens up so not sure what the problem is as i said i have not had much time to use it yet. I have the HU in one car but i have been driving the other car in recent days. If anyone else has had similar issue and you have been able to resolve it please share. BTW i did not have any issues with android auto with S8+

  • Any ways around the fact there is no notification led? it doesn't seem to have always on display either…

  • Pros
Fast fast charging. Like an 1 hour and a bit to get fully charged
    Zippy good performance
Battery is 1.5 days normal use
A clear case is provided as well screen protector.
Bang for buck when it was on sale.$249

    Cons
    No led notification
    No wireless charging
No always on… Only when charging
    No IR blaster.
    Hardly any covers .
    Speakers are a bit low

  • For me annoyances:
    * App auto start up settings randomly reset
    * Screen randomly turns to a shade of grey
    * Front facing camera quality still not good especially whatsapp or less than perfect light
    * No cases
