Recommend PS4 Games for Multiplayer (Year 6 Son and Dad)

I bought PS4 pro from the last Boxing Day sale and just opened it for my child to play with. Ozbargainers recommenced Spider-Man to buy so I did, and even if PS4 was for my son I’m so tempted to play with him as the game graphic and quality are so exceeded my expectations (I used to have PS2).

Please recommend me games I can play with my son as multi players, I’m not into fortnite or very violent games like mass killing or slicing throats. And it it worth buying VR?

    Your self control is commendable.

That's 79 days. (yes I included the extra day in February for all the smarties that want to prove me wrong)

    • I know right? I could’ve waited another couple of months to give him on his birthday in May.

    • I bought a PS4 Slim during Black Friday sales in 2018…16 months ago. It's still sitting in its box along with 10 sealed games that were all like $10 each…

That's not restraint, that's mental illness

        • I just have too many games backlogged on my Xbox One X that I'm trying to get through. Gamepass doesn't help. There are simply too many good games and not enough time in this day and age. Another reason why I have held myself back from getting a Switch.

I prefer the N64 days when I was a kid where I would play to death games I got for Christmas…

          • @manbearpig: It's just called restraint against consumerism.

I've fallen on harder times recently and that's caused me to stop hoarding games just because they're cheap and spend time playing and enjoying games I've been putting off.

Currently 50 hours into Witcher 3 now and Have Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Link's Awakening, Luigi's Mansion 3, Katana Zero and Life Is Strange 2 immediately ready to go afterwards.

VR might not be great as there aren't many great titles, but if you do go that way bestsaber is quite fun.
For normal games there are fun sports titles that are 2 player. EA FIFA, 2k NBA and Rocket League

    Minecraft (it has multiplayer mode)
Lego games (my kids loved this)
Racing games (Forza, Dirt, Gran Turismo)

    • Which LEGO games do you recommend? There are so many titles.

      • Lego City undercover is my son's favourite Lego title, as he can cause chaos as it's open world

      • Lego Marvel, Lego Batman 3, Lego Movie,

Look into Ratchet & Clank. It has a great co-operative mode, parent/child friendly, and the cut-scenes are like a cartoon.

Ratchet and Clank games are absolutely great. Your kid will have a blast.
          Definitely recommend.

  • My 9 and 11 year olds play Minecraft, Fortnite on PC, Xbox/iPad.

It’s locked down so they can’t add friends or multiplayer chat/talk as I have all the passwords to accounts and the iPads got parental controls enabled to prevent use of the camera and mic

lego games are great for younger kids cause they look awesome, quite funny and you just continue if you die.

My son was a fricken stud hog when we played together. Be prepared for that.

When I was that age I was into sports and vehicle games, so if recommend:
    Gran Turismo Sport
    Wipeout or Redout
    NBA 2Kanything
    FIFA
    NBA 2K Playgrounds 2
    WWE 2K18/19 (avoid 20)
    Rocket League

    Also highly recommended:
    Human Fall Flat
    Unravel 2
    Minecraft
Doom 1993 (it is violent but not realistic violence at all and the graphics are so outdated that you'd be hard pressed to be up in arms about it)

    little big planet3

    'Rocket league' and 'Gang Beasts'

If you're not into shooty shooty stabby stabby games, some fun non-violent co-op multiplayer games I play with my kids around that age include Overcooked (1 & 2), Lovers in a Dangerous Space Time, Minecraft (obviously), and Lego City Undercover. They might be too kid friendly for your son's sensibilities though, and none of those games are graphical marvels, but they're all good fun.

VR is a big expense for very few worthwhile games imo, although the ones that are worth playing are really good, like Beat Saber and Astro Bot Rescue Mission. If you're not super keep on playing one of a handful of VR titles, I wouldn't dive in now. I'd guess an updated PSVR will eventually come to PS5 and be backwards compatible with the handful of first gen VR titles that are worth playing.

Instead of VR, get a Nintendo Switch instead.

    Another vote for Overcooked here

I’d be cautious of exposing kids to video games at that age. Unless you have some very strict rules, addiction is no joke. I’m into bonding with your children, but think wisely. Why not outdoor activities like fishing, bush walking, even indoor rock climbing…..

Anyway, just make sure you moderate the use. My 2c worth.

    • +2

Because outdoor activities are boring to someone who wants to play video games.

Let them play games if they're in year 6. They don't have to devote their lives to it.

I casually played games for a couple hours a week at most for most of my life until I got my first job and had enough money to buy my OWN first console at the age of 19. Never cared enough as a kid to devote all my time to it.

Every kid and parent is going to have a fairly broad range of experiences with video games and aren't all going to become addicted. Especially if they avoid online-only games and games with microtransactions.

So you purchased an M rated game (recommended for 15+) for your 11-12 year old kid? Anyway… +1 for the sporting games recommended above, and then go outside regularly and kick a soccer ball, shoot some hoops, or throw a few baseballs with him.

  • Diablo 3 because you can play split screen. I like D3 better on console than PC (kinda) for this reason.

    • Were you downvoted because of the violence in D3? Because it's an excellent game and the co-op mode works very well on the console.

      • I think I was downvoted by people that hate D3 or who have mistaken me for a console scrub.

I am PC master race all day. But for 2 players on one system, PC can't compete with Diablo 3 on console.

Pretty weird that the OP said he wants to play with his son on a single PS4 and heaps of these recommendations support one player per system.

Edit: I guess downvoted because of the "mass killing" requirement. Maybe I've been desensitised but D3 doesn't really qualify for me as a violent game. Cartoon isometric 'gore' vs something like battlefield, hitman, just doesn't compare. Even games like last of us seem more violent to me than D3.

Hell. I'd say "this war of mine" is perhaps the game that affected me the most in my recent gaming history. And that has little visual violence but very adult themes.

  • Ooh I have another recommendation.

    Cuphead.

Aside from being a history lesson on what games were like in the "olden days" (read: gruellingly difficult) it will teach strength of character, perseverance, and real accomplishment.

Also, it's heaps easier 2 player so he'll appreciate how much cooperation actually solves problems.

You might want to watch some gameplay videos to check it's something you'd both be into (essentially a platformer with 2d shooting elements).

    • Cuphead is an Xbox game. It's not on PS4.

      • Oh really? Ok someone told me a lie then, they must have an Xbox. Apologies.

      • It's on everything BUT PS4. Switch, PC and Xbox One. Even Tesla.

  • Thank you all. Of the recommendations I picked Gran Turismo sport (mainly for me…:)
I’m thinking LEGO City undercover as the next pick.

    • Excellent picks

  • Haven't played it yet but apparently 'Starlink' isn't too bad and it comes with collectables the youngin will like. Usually get it for $20-$25 on sale which is all the time. Has multiplayer space exploration.
