Coles/Woolworths Is Stopping Its Online Shopping?

Seems legit https://shop.coles.com.au/a/national/content/customer-notice
But why? Its the best time to expand its online shopping business, not to close it down.

    But why?

    Stock availability.

    • +2

Even easier to enforce purchase quantities on online platform, no?

      • There is no stock to fulfil these orders. Majority of the orders now and always are essentials which are flying off the shelves. The delivery service is an add-on to the shelves in store, and can simply be removed whenever.

      • Doesn't matter if when the local store member goes to get the online ordered products and can't fill the order.

    • -1

      Nah, Para 1 cites COVID-19 & Safety.

  • +10

Reckon every order must have items they can’t fullfill so they’ve decided to cancel the lot instead.

    • This is pretty much it. Even the substitutes are wiped out. Given the online orders are picked from the shelves inventory tracking between online and at store level would be difficult

  • Perhaps we could all volunteer to work at the toilet paper factories :-P

  • +10

If you read the full notice, they are not stopping completely, but are going to concentrate on helping those who most need it.

“ we dedicate vans in our network to delivering groceries to those in genuine need, especially the most vulnerable and those isolated,..”

If a large section of the community had not lost their collective minds, then this wouldn’t be necessary.

    • +1

Pretty much us all are on the same boat

    • +4

Are you one of those who lost their minds and stocked up?

Or are you one of those without basic supplies now?

    • +2

I drove my old man to woolies for the elderly / pensioner early opening and there were hundreds of people standing in queue. God knows how early some of them got there. We didn't even bother standing in line. TP would have been gone before we even entered the store.

      • +2

Did your father need toilet paper?

        • Yes. I've been using paper towels.

Merged from Suspension of Supermarket Home Deliveries Coles/Woolies

Coles & WW no longer offering home deliveries. Reasons stated are that they are trying to curb the panic buying. (7 weeks TP being sold each day).

Do you think they are running out of food?

It is illogical that deliveries are suspended, when social distancing is in place. What about the people forced to self isolate?

We are told repeatedly that their is enough for everyone if people shop as normal & recent statement from supermarket CEO claim that majority of our food is grown & manufactured locally, so shortage is not a problem.

Only limited quantities of items are able to be purchased online - I guess some are doing multiple orders.

Will government step in & regulate supermarket home deliveries?

Hoping someone a lot more insightful than me can offer thoughts on this counterintuitive & shocking development of supermarkets suspending online sales.

Update 1: please don't panic! My point is getting info from ppl more knowledgeable than me, & fellow ozb'ers have reassured that supplies are not low, it is mostly logistical/warehousing issue that cannot cope with demands,

Update 2: surely their is a more efficient way Supermarkets can regulate sales, that doesn't exclude online. E.g. limited quantities and 2 deliveries per household per week.

For in-store customers, a card issued (Woolworths rewards) must be scanned at checkout - limited quantities, 1 transaction per person per day.

At least until panic buying is under control.

A more responsible approach from supermarkets, rather than forcing all online shoppers in-store, impeding on health & excluding ppl unable to shop in store.

    • +10

Reasons stated are that they are trying to curb the panic buying.

      Correct.

Do you think they are running out of food?

Yes they are. The suppliers however are not. Problem is normally Coles/Woolies restock some items weekly/bi-weekly but people are hoarding/buying months-in-advance worths of supplies. Suppliers cannot keep up with demand.
Source: I just spoke to one of managers at Woolies.

Will government step in & regulate supermarket home deliveries?

      Nope

        /endthread.

There is enough for everyone if people shop as they normally shop.

Aaarrrgggghhhh your post doesn't have enough panic!!!!! They are running out of food!!!! We are all going to starve and have dirty bums!!!!!! The sky is falling!!!!!!!

        • +1

@brendanm Not sure I sound exactly like that, but appreciate reply. I think that in this unique time, over acting & preparation is actually warranted, but totally agree that level headedness is paramount. Just shocked by the decision as it is appears opposite of community needs.

          • +2

@zoe hart: Wasn't directed at you exactly, but everyone over reacting. As woolies and Coles have said, if everyone just calms the flap down there will be no issue.

            • @brendanm: Thanks, yeh hoping we all calm the flap down with time! While still being vigilant.

      • +2

Reasons stated are that they are trying to curb the panic buying.
        Correct.

        More in-store panic buying then

      • @brokenenglish Ok, Thanks for reply. You have instilled a bit of calmness I me.

    • +3

Yeah i wondered about that, if they aren't delivering, how are the people who are required to self-isolate meant to get any groceries? I don't understand what their options would be?

      • -3

That’s why we stock up before isolation

        • +2

if they just flew in from overseas how they could do that? Also you can't stock up now, shelves are kinda bare..

          • @Iggemo: Solid point

            • +8

@dylanando: Also, i never stocked up. I've been doing 100% normal shopping to not contribute to the problems with the stock. I mean, it seems like that might've been a noble but naive decision at this juncture, though. Since now there's buckleys on the shelves and i can't get delivery any more, sigh.

              • +4

@Iggemo: You’ve done the right thing.
Those panic buyers are selfish, morally corrupt and socially irresponsible.
Staying level headed and buying responsibly with consideration for others is admirable.
Obviously people are frightened but we need to be banding together, supporting each other and contributing collectively to our society.
The Italians are in lock down, singing to each other from balconies, having synchronised hand clapping to thank the frontline medical staff caring for their sick.
We are tearing each other apart for a sheet of bog roll and taking more than our fair share depriving the vulnerable of necessities.
It’s disgraceful and we need to stop it, lift our game, start looking out for each other and create a caring supportive inclusive society for us all to contribute to and share.

                • @Meho2026: I disagree, and will not be contributing collectively to our demise. More people out going about their business regularly means more infections.

You can have the admiration and synchronized hand clapping, I'll keep the essential supplies to get me through the next few months of this pandemic.

You see evil in the people. It's not the people's fault. The government and the corporations had 2 months to be informed and prepare, just as I did. I took a gander at the supermarkets last night, and what was clear to me from the looks and the chatter was that most of the people weren't in denial but simply too late. They would have prepped if they could, but now their only course of action left was to sigh in frustration while otherwise retaining their composure. It's sad.

Pay attention to the way words are used. First comes the 'panic', where people buy calmly and methodically buy up filter masks and half price Viva rolls. Second comes the 'antisocial behavior', where people refuse to be left empty-handed of supplies and assets. Third comes the designation of the individual as 'selfish'.. well, we all know what that means.

It only takes a seed of doubt to make us humans not act on what we would otherwise be comfortable with. The government saying 'masks are useless, but we need them' is obvious BS, but they say it because it actually works. 'Don't buy a second pack because some poor granny needs it' is another variation. Stock up and shut the door folks!

Not only that, how do they think age care and disability homes get food?

        • +7

Generally not from Colesworth. Their quantities are enough that they get it from providores and wholesalers

    • +1

The supply chain is good and plenty of food out there but a lot of packaging comes from China and isn't available.

      • +1

Good point but they'll find alternatives quick enough. Even if it's sticking food into Chinese takeaway containers or zip lock bags and taping them shut.

        • where do you think chinese take away containers and ziplock bags come from?

Have you ever seen a high volume food production line? It's not that simple to change container types.

Also, beverages don't go too well with take away containers and zip lock bags.

    • +1

shelves were stripped bare last time i ventured into coles/woolies

    • +3

It's more to do with the way Coles/Woolworths fulfils online orders.

Instead of having a warehouse where they pick online orders' items and then put them on a truck for delivery, instead they pick the items from the shelves in store.

When you have the general public also shopping from these same shelves, there can come a time where an online order can't be fulfilled as the someone the general public has already purchased at such a volume that it is sold out and not available to the online order.

I suspect this is why Woolworths was able to fulfil orders from their West Footscray Distribution Centre in Melbourne whilst they were cancelling other Victorian online orders (that had items picked from their stores instead of the distribution centre).

    • It is illogical that deliveries are suspended, when social distancing is in place.

No one thinks of the poor delivery drivers contacting person after person on the way to your place…

  • +5

getting everyone to go to the supermarket (most likely multiple times and possibly multiple locations), in the hope to buy a few items, sounds like a great way to spread the infection

  • +4

they couldn't fulfil my order at all a couple of weeks ago. pointless to keep the site running if they can't fulfil any orders.

    • +1

Yeah no idea why instead of fixing it they decided to scrap it.

      • because they don't want to pay for increasing workforce / additional shifts to fulfill customer's orders

either that , or supplies not coming fast enough

      • they've cancelled it because they've run out of supplies. quick, to your nearest supermarket to broden whatever is left!

  • +3

Going to screw us up, we fly back to OZ friday - how the hell can we stock up during our 14 day lockdown. Might be a great time to start living of worms and sandflies… Always wanted to be a jockey. Must be going to be a work-around to get around this? Woolies would be over run with orders if Coles pull the plug on deliveries?

    • Coles have stated they are recruiting drivers. My guess is they are taking a week or two to reevaluate as current process is unworkable. It's unnaceptable & worrying that people in ur situation (etc) have no clear access to groceries, and increase numbers instore. If you find a workaround pls update us

    • I asked that exact same question above, no idea how returnees are meant to self-isolate when they can no longer get groceries delivered???

    • Call 13HEALTH. They can arrange neccesities/supplies to be delivered since you can't leave house.

I thought it's just Coles. Is WW really not delivering? I paid for yearly subscription though

    • I dont think they have officially announced, but all time slots are greyed out at checkout page. Comments on Coles fb page also mention W unavailable.

What about this designated time for the elderly… 7am

Who the hell is up at 5:30 getting ready to shop

    • +1

Not to sure how many people need to get out of bed one and a half hours ahead of time to drive to the local supermarket 5 or 10 at the most minutes away. To be honest I could wake 15 minutes before 7am. My local is 5 minutes walk.

    • +2

      Most old people….

    • +3

I think most old people wake up at 3am so 5.30am is like morning tea for them

My local Coles is literally about 65 - 70% sold out across the whole store. I haven't seen toilet paper in over 2 weeks (literally down to my last 2 rolls - the I guess I'll be taking showers). Today at Coles and an ALDI I went to were completely wiped out of perishable items now too. Entire meat/chiller sections obliterated, eggs, milk (fresh and UHT), cheese about 80% gone, frozen veggies, chips, deserts, all bread/bakery products and spreads, salads/lettuce, tomatoes, and about 50% of the drinks isle are all completely wiped out.

Not going to be long before the government will have to step in. It's only getting worse around here.

    • Is exactly same here too.

    • +2

yeah same. I haven't seen toilet paper for weeks so… i guess those hoarders were right after all since they're laughing now and those of us who acted sensibly now don't have any means to get what we need. Needed stronger intervention much sooner.

      • -1

or maybe you needed more foresight :)
