    Any good for isolating?

I think right now malaria is the least of our concerns

    • +10

If you get malaria you'll be wishing you had the coronavirus

    • Well if we can't easily travel to countries with malaria now - of course that's not a problem.

But Australians face at least 3 types of serious viruses this year - covid 19, seasonal flu expected to start next month (thousands die each year here), & other debilitating or deadly mosquito borne viruses like Ross River Virus (10k serious cases/yr) & Dengue Fever.

While covid 19 is complex & difficult to control - mossie bites aren't. It's something we can take control over - don't get bitten!
      This is one solution.

    Thanks OP

    That's one big mosquito.

  • I Need protection from coronavirus Mosquito are my friends now :)

    • Mosquitos last night in Brisbane!

      • lol they are here 24/7 365

        • +3

          They're breeding up now!

And some carry nasty viruses like Ross River Virus in Brisbane (& most of Australia) & Dengue fever in the North!

          Mosquitos are nasty friends!!
          They can kill!

1 bite can be debilitating. People can't work for up to years. Some with RRV suicide!

I was bitten while teaching about RRV on the Gold Coast. Foolishly, I fell asleep without a mossie net in an old house. Have been in pain ever since!!

Can anyone recommend a place to buy business hammocks?

    • +5

Have you tried the hammock complex on third?

  • With the recent heavy rains in parts of Australia, expect a lot of mosquitoes soon.

With viral illness spread by mosquitoes - that is a concern.

The effect of Ross River Virus can last for years, with debilitating pain. It is found in all of Australia.

The suicide rate in those badly affected is 3 times the average, according to research. My old colleagues found 30% of people in new bushland housing areas around Brisbane have had RRV.

And there are worse mosquito borne viruses than RRV!

    • Do you work for Big W? :-P

      • Lol. If you've had the pain etc of this virus for years, you'd hopefully warn others to!

Just use some effective form of protection from Mosquitos when away from home or in nature!!

It's a classic pattern now for widespread RRV outbreaks.

Around 10k people a year (in normal years) are affected enough to be given blood tests for RRV. More than that just think it's a bad flu.

        • I became more aware of the severity of malaria after reading about the main actor from Get Smart (Don Adams) having caught Blackwater fever that had a 90% mortality rate and he spent a year in hospital. I think he said he was seriously considering suicide at the time as well. Not pretty!

          • @kahn: When I read about the high prevalence of suicide (in a research study) - it made me consider a lot of illness differently - including my RRV. It helps people if they know others have similar dark thoughts & doubts!
For some… there is no cure, except death!

The suicide rate in those badly affected is 3 times the average

Can only imagine if a dentist contracted it.

Pretty pricey here too - https://www.outbackadventures.net.au/product/oztrail-1p-mosq…

    Good deal indeed.

  • hammock full of mosquitoes trapped inside. sounds delightful

  • Similar model available from Kogan for the same price but with free shipping.

It also can support 2 people and up to 300kg and weighs .4kg lighter.

Also worth noting you may have a discount code on your email for Kogan, I have $14 off a $50 spend. So can get 2 for $45.98

    • I don't think weighing less is actually a good thing. Especially when its a double vs. a single.

The Kogan and ebay ones look very flimsy compared to this OZtrail one.

      • Come in handy if you're carrying it in a backpack though.

        • More important is if it's comfortable to sleep in, keeps out the mossies, & has a good life span. Unknown with both.

Have walked in mountains up to 2 weeks with everything on my back. Slight weight increase is worth a better night's sleep.
Used a 1.4kg Oztrail 2 person tent. So this is a bit heavy. Hopefully the weight can be reduced as may include packaging etc.

Received a few $14 Kogan vouchers, off min$50 spend. Last time it was $20 off $50.

Will try this one & return if unsuitable.

      Free pickup where stock available.

Pay with 5% discounted Wish card & earn a few Rewards points. (saves $1.45)

90 day change of mind returns (I'm not really that sure I need this)

Dealing with Oztrail was easy as they know their products & want to improve them, whereas Kogan generally don't have a clue about their products.

Have happily used Oztrail tents & camping gear. Good value. Had a tent replaced free when a fault was found after many months of use. They paid for return postage & promptly sent out replacement. Good customer service!

Compare that with fixing a simple problem at Kogan recently. Got conflicting answers & took ages to get the refund I was owed due to their fault. Won't ever buy from Kogan again.

        Yep,

I ordered a mixer from Kogan, 1 Dec. last year. Got the email they'd taken the money, then nothing. Figured it was Xmas so was patient. After another week, I contacted them as their webpage stated I already had an email address registered with them (I use Lastpass and it had nothing, I'm pretty sure I checked out as a guest)? So, I go through having them send me a password reset. THAT, never arrives.

This went on for four weeks. I kept telling them I could NOT access "my account". Their reset didn't open a browser, nor would it work copy/paste. Eventually, they sent a working reset. When I finally got into my account, the mixer is there, out-of-stock. However, they were still selling this 3 days AFTER I bought mine!, as I had told a friend about it. They kept sending emails saying, "delayed" (pre-corona, btw).

        It arrived yesterday.

        Never again, Kogan.

        • Lol. That's so bad. It's not as if you order an appliance to use it!

Luckily I was buying Belgium beer - the only stuff up was their system didn't deduct the $20 voucher.
The beer arrived quickly as it wasn't from Kogan, but the marketplace.
Eventually they paid out 2 x $20 refunds by mistake. Their systems are that bad, it was good for me!
Wouldn't want to make a warranty claim!

I'm guessing that the "water resistant" part here isn't talking about the main product itself - which seems to be open to the rain. I guess you'd need something to hang over the top of this to provide shelter from rain?

    • I can't see a fly in any photos online. This is a deal-breaker for me. I'll stick with my Hennessy hammock https://hennessyhammock.com/, the kids can miss out :)

      • +1

Cost $29? 😉 But very nice!

Yes this is for clear sky only use. Should be great looking up at the stars.

Still I've got a stack of flies - 1 should serve the purpose at this low price.

  • mmm I had a Hennesy Hammock, awesome bit of kit… they are dozens of times more expensive though… ?

    http://www.hennessyhammock.com/

  • A question for those who bought:
Was the hammock branded "EQUIP" rather than Oztrails?
    Manufactured by DEVONO BRANDS China.

    On eBay
3.1/5 (5 reviews) - especially zipper gets stuck

BigW store system shows same product & photo as Oztrails site. Product code for their Oztrails product is this product. Both are same as photo on this product.

Price on Shelf $49, currently scans & online @$35.

    • I had the same concern when picking up today.
Look at the pic on the oztrail site, it's the same as the bigw version. Model: FHE-MOSS-C

Seems like either Oztrail owns the Equip brand or they just resell this hammock.

Either way, it's awesome. I'm in it at the moment in my backyard lol.

      • Thanks for the consumer review!
        What - no photo?
        Comfy?

Would recommend lubing Zip so it is easy to open (main complaint in reviews - it sticks). Will extend life of zip. I use a CRC Silicon spray.

Asked BigW - they were surprised by difference between their description & product brand.

My guess it is imported by & sold locally by Oztrail (at Brisbane Airport).

Found the EqupOutdoors site with 3 photos & specs (us$50)
        https://www.equipoutdoors.com/product-page/mosquito-hammock-…

Hope you read & agreed to the warning label - you agree not to make any claim against Equip for any injury using the hammock!
        So play safely!!

Was at the Bay today in Brissie - tempted to put up between trees on the waterfront (33C) to catch the breeze 🌴=😎=🌴 but was crowded.

Have mounting at home for existing $9.58 "Brazilian" fabric hammock - will try in morning.
