630

Have just received an email from Velocity Frequent Flyer that they're giving free status credits as gift for existing Silver, Gold and Platinum members. Hope Qantas will follow suit!

Status Credit gift
We know that in the current environment with travel restrictions and reduced flights, it may be challenging to maintain your status. To help those of you who may be impacted, we will be gifting Status Credits to all of our current Silver, Gold, and Platinum Velocity Frequent Flyer members to help you maintain your membership.

The below Status Credits will be gifted to your accounts during the first week of the next three months as follows:

Status Level April May June Total
Platinum 70 70 70 210
Gold 35 35 35 105
Silver 20 20 20 60

If you’re receiving the Status Credit gift, we’ll send you a separate email with all the details in the next 2 weeks. You don’t need to do anything at this time. We’ll take care of the arrangements.

    Hope Qantas will follow suit!

QF announced status hold for 12 months which I think is actually more valuable than extra SCs.

      Yes heaps better!

Not if you've already requalified and you roll-over in the next month or so.

All my impacted flights are May and june which word have been around 1000sc

        Exactly this ^
My Qantas membership year renews next week so I get exactly zero benefit from the Qantas extension. For next year, starting 1 April, people with the same renewal date cannot fly but get no status relief whatsoever from the Qantas arrangement. Virgin's bonus status credits (which is the same as reducing the achievement threshold but appears much kinder) would be far more useful compared with Qantas' gift of nothing.

    • Virgin's points are per month so if this rolls on past 3 months then they have the option of giving you more points.

very odd method of doing this… could easily still be short if you originally had travel in next 3-4 months and your qualify period is during this time

    • Exactly, I was supposed to be going to Singapore next week and then Europe in May. It would have taken me out of silver and into gold. Oh well, c'est la vie.

    • Yeah I'm still losing my Gold and they're about to cancel a bunch of flights which would have got me over the edge.

    • Exactly. I’m in this exact boat. Won’t be requaling my gold now due to cancelled work and private trips. This doesn’t get me over the line. Way to look after your loyal supporters during this time virgin.

Yes, Qantas policy on this much more generous. Hope Virgin follow suit.

  • +2

very true. They shall have extended statuses for 12 month.

  • +1

Qantas is definitely superior. It’s not just the status we need to worry about, what about the sectors! My sectors are about to clock over but I have more than enough status points

I'm Velocity Gold and have flights booked to Europe and back next month which would have comfortably got me the 200 credits I need by early June. With this scheme I'll lose my status. I was really expecting Virgin to match Qantas :(. If you status match now with Qantas, would they extend the Gold status for a year as well I wonder?

  • Sweet, I was 20 points short for Platinum so this will get me there. Just a shame I'll then burn through that tier without visiting an airport the way things are going. 😕

  • Holding my Freddy vote until the come to the party like Qantas and Hilton.

I might be the odd one out here but the 40 status credits in April and May will push me that last bit from Silver to Gold so this is good news.

I do have domestic travel planned in April (Mel-Tas, and Mel-Qld) which would have pushed my over anyway, but for now even the domestic travel is probably up in the air.

    • Enjoy the 14 day quarantine period if you enter Tasmania

      • Yes, as I said the domestic travel is up in the air (so to speak).

        • You say it's "up in the air" as if your trip might still go ahead, and you made your comment after Tasmania had already announced the quarantine period…

  • damn I'll prob lose plat after this year :(

Hooray! Good one. Another half-baked scheme from Mr PS or the board. Just want to be different to every other airline in the world so people don't say Virgin is a copycat. Virgin is almost always last to announce any changes. Mark my words, this guy is going to ruin Virgin.

You can give out all the SC credits to "help", but if you can't fly, you can't get the sectors you require to re-qualify. It is calculated to look generous on the surface as it will only help a few.

    • Agree it's not well thought out at all. Seems like just a reaction to the Qantas status extension, and not a very good one!

As mentioned, how will it help people who are short of the flown sectors requirement?

Also how will family pooling work, will you get the SC gifts pooled? I assume you would but it's not clear.

Finally and most importantly, it only starts from April. If you are going to give it monthly instead of just an extension then you need to acknowledge the disruption to the first 3 months of the year as well!

  • This works well enough for me.
My partner and I pool all of her points/credits to my account. A couple of joint trips constructed in a way to maximise SC that fell within a short period qualified me for Gold.
These bonus SC are more than I would earn in these months anyway.

Update: They have extended offer to include keeping status for 12 months PLUS bonus credits :) https://www.executivetraveller.com/news/virgin-australia-vel…

    • Nice one, great confidence booster

  • Comment retracted due to update from Virgin

  • Well! Well! Well! The Velocity Barons woke up. Good on you to beat Qantas. Keep it up. There may be salvation.

  • Damn! One month too late, I just lapsed in to silver from gold lol
