Free 12 Month Status Extension for Virgin Australia Velocity Platinum/Gold/Silver Members

1480

Following on from the previous announcement of free Status Credits, all VA members with Status now also get a 12 month extension. This is most likely due to QF announcing the same extension last night.

Previous mention of free Status Credits listed here, this is still applicable:

Dear xxxx,

As we all know, this is a rapidly evolving situation which has developed further in the last 24 hours.

In addition to the Status Credit gift recently announced, we’ll also be extending and preserving the current Status of all Velocity Frequent Flyer Silver, Gold and Platinum members for a further 12 months.

This means that there are no minimum flight sectors required to maintain your current Status, for the next 12 months.

We’ll send you an email in the next two weeks with details on:
1. Your Status Credit gift
2. Your 12-month Status extension

In this changing environment, the safety and needs of our members and guests are key and we are really pleased to be able to offer this 12-month Status extension in addition to the Status Credit gift.

Thank you for your continued loyalty and your ongoing support of the Virgin Australia Group.

Yours sincerely,

  • That's good!
I wonder what happens if I already reach the gold status for another year but I did not go through the review yet. E.g. I already have achieved Gold from may 20 to may 21..

    • Yeah not sure, doesn't seem to be a Q&A like the QF page. I know someone who has retained Platinum and it ticks over in April, wonder if they'll get an extra year on top of that or not.

      • I hope so, otherwise it would be a sort of joke for me :D

    • To rephrase, I think you asking if the one year extension starts from now or from the next review date. Is that correct?

      • Correct

  • Any idea how this would work for paused status members? I'm a Platinum with a parental status pause till mid-April - after which I get the platinum status for another 12 months.

  • if virgin goes under waht would that mean to ppl with points??

    • +3

Gone. That's why some are transferring them to Kris flyer.

      • Yeah. When Ansett went under in the early 2000s those with Ansett FF points just lost them - effectively those people become unsecured creditors, and they got back zero cents in the dollar.

      • +9

Transferring points to SQ puts extra pressure on VA's cashflow as they need to buy those KF miles from SQ. I'm currently sitting on almost 300K VA points and I'm not that worried at this stage.

Once covid19 peaks we are likely to see a lot of incentives to get bums on seats again. There should also be a lot of capacity for reward bookings. Some time later FFP will devalue everyone's miles to offset the incentives.

My sense is we're a long way from another Ansett. Scotty has done some stupid things, but I doubt he'll let VA go under. It would give QF/JQ too much power. Relief for airlines will be drip fed as they complain publicly about their losses.

I just ordered an apple ipad pro about 20 mins ago with my points. With AUD crashing anything imported will rise in price soon enough.

      • Not sure why the down votes. 100% true

Thats the confidence we like to see. Assuming they won't go bust.

damn, was hoping for my status to become a virgin again.

  • WOW

  • +1

nice, cos the status gift wasn't going to be enough to keep my existing tier.

  • +1

Well done virgin in correcting the first attempt. This is great to see and ensures that I will be able to maintain gold and keep supporting them once things start to return to normal.

  • +7

Good news. Really hope Virgin can stay afloat through these interesting times.

  • Awesome deal. I wasn't going to be able to maintain Gold this year, so this is great for me.

    • Me too! I had a plan involving flying to HKg last month that went out the window. People seem worried about VA, I reckon this will be good for them, they have a stack of cash and a perfectly good excuse to downsize and reduce costs, while their biggest cost just ranked in the form of fuel prices.

  • I was 5 trips away from getting Silver, all booked and ready to go. Guess I will have to start all over again.

    • -1

I was 2 flights away from Silver, indeed flights just got canned. Got so annoyed when I received the email that I wrote back complaining.

  • Anyone know when this will be applied? My status is due for review at end of the month and it will be downgraded. Will the extension be for the status held at the time of the notification letter or will it be further down the track?

  • So do Silver members get two additional lounge passes? Or do their current passes get extended by a year in validity?

    • +1

I would imagine you will get 2 more passes when your review date ticks over.

  • Damn, I just got downgraded from gold to silver literally just 2 weeks ago!!

    • Haha same here, though the email I got had a gold banner so I'm holding out hope.

  • +1

Has anyone else received an email with the extension details but the wrong review date? Still says May 2020 for me…

  • Me too

  • We noticed that you recently downgraded. We have decided to reinstate your previous tier, meaning you are now a Platinum Velocity Frequent Flyer member again.1 Your new review date is now 30 March 2021.

  • It's weird. My status review date remains exactly the same, 28 Jan 2021???

    • Your review date hasn't changed. The extension will be given when the review date comes up.

Some of you have been asking us questions about how your Status extension will work. Sorry we weren’t clear in our email to you a few hours ago.

Your current Status will be extended for a further year1. Since we weren’t planning on reviewing your status until [insert date here], you’ll get a further 12 months once you reach that date. You don't need to do anything and once your bonus year of Status begins, you'll be able to see this on our Website and in the Velocity App.

You will of course still receive the Status Credit gift2 we offered you in our last email. We hope this is now a little clearer.
