What TV Should I Buy for $400- $600?

Hi all!

I've recently moved out and becoming really overwhelmed in my pursuit to find a TV.
I have an old hand-me-down at the moment that doesn't even provide all the free to air TVs!!
I recently moved out by myself and now have to work from home indefinitely so the TV will be well used!

What I want:

  • Access to all free to air channels
  • Youtube
  • Spotify
  • Freeview
  • Stan
  • Bigger than 40 inches
  • Decent image and sound

Would be nice…but not essential:

  • Spotify
  • Stan
  • DVD player
  • As big as I can get for the price range

Thank in advanced OzB Community! I don't think I could have moved out by myself without these website to help me. :)

Use the Ozbargain search once you've figured out what TV your after and it'll give you a good indication of price.

    • Thanks a lot!!!!

  • Go with a Hisense 55 if you can afford it

    • Wow, looks great. This is seriously a top contender for me

  • You should consider getting a vodafone tv box which has a chromecast built in. I find the cheaper tv interfaces to be a bit clunky and with the vtv you can use a phone to do the controls.

    • Hmmm I really wanted to buy a TV that was a one stop shop with everything in it.

I understand that. Can always buy one later if it gets slow.
Try going in store to see how friendly the user interfaces are though.

If you can get a good one-stop tv, go for it.

But keep in mind that everything you asked for can be met with any crappy tv from the last 10 years (which will play free-to-air) + a $30 chromecast (all the web stuff) + any external speaker (optional)

Good one-stops can be great, but I've often found myself using a chromecast anyway, since searching for stuff on a phone tends to be easier

        • Thanks - that's food for thought

    • A cheap xbox-s or playstaion4 works as well with smart tv apps…

Love chromecasting and vodafone tv box is a must have tv life extender!

It's not UHD but that's fine for the purpose.

Wait, how is this possible? The analog signal is off, so if you are getting anything it must be digital?
Which means you have a digital tuner, but don't get all the channels? What TV is it?

Have you tried retuning it to find the more recently added channels? You might be able to get all of these without realising it.

If the TV is okay, the rest of the stuff you want just needs a $30 chromecast

    • It's a super old Pangoo - only has ABC, Channel 7 and channel 10. I've tried everything to get all the free to air channels but my googling seems to say that some channels won't tune in to a TV this old and you need something newer.

Besides that - this TV is less than 30 inches and when it rains I loose reception to ALL the channels. It's time to upgrade!

$598, 65", rebadged TCL, will do freeview, netflix and stan, it's 4k.

  • TCL 50P8M 50" 4K UHD Smart LED TV has recently dropped in price to $495. Just wait for the usual ebay, Good Guys, JB Hifi discounts to come that bring it under $450. 10, 15, 20% discounts have been available for this TV when it was at a higher price pretty frequently.
