Where Can You Complain about Businesses Charging More during Corona Virus Shortage?

Hi
I've read about a few places like local Indian / Sri Lankan grocery stores especially charging more like 2-3 times due to higher demand during corona virus to benefit for their business particularly in this hour of chaos instead of helping.

Can someone please guide where/how you can complain about it please.

It's more so they can stop doing it or get penalised for doing something ethically wrong. On other note can businesses do that ? It's not like Uber surge right ?

    • get penalised for doing something ethically wrong.

But would that be also ethically wrong?

      • Even the Catholic Church has no ethics. You're expecting a small business owner to?

      • Let me help you get to the "answer".

        So far, we have…

Ethically wrong because not morally correct, which isn't morally incorrect, simply not correct morally.

    • No disagreeing with your concern, but ethics depend on your upbringing and dare I say it the morality of your upbringers beliefs.

Just like with war, god is always being asked to help both sides to win.

There's a difference between ethics and law.

Also a difference between ethics and "what I want to see".

    • Seems more like you want to single out immigrants, to me

It's exactly like uber surge - higher demand, higher prices.

Complain about what? Unless it's a regulated or fixed price product, they can pretty much charge what they want currently. You will have to change the law.

The Australian Consumer Law does not regulate the pricing of products and services. If consumers think a business is charging too much, they may wish to offer feedback directly to the business, or to the relevant industry association, for their consideration.

Businesses may charge what they see as a fair and reasonable price, except when pricing is regulated or otherwise fixed. There are also laws against businesses colluding to inflate or control prices. This is known as cartel conduct or price fixing.

A business may set whatever prices it chooses for its goods or services. Government agencies will not interfere unless there is evidence of illegal conduct (such as collusion).

I think you should move to a different country. It appears capitalism doesn't agree with you.

The market value of something is whatever someone is willing to pay for it. Why should they sell for less than market value?

  • There are no flights going at the moment, which means they are pretty doomed if all their stock is imported. Fair to charge more due to the shortage. Better yet, did you ask the owners why the price had gone up? Maybe there're simpler explanations too.

    • cargo freight and ship still coming to Australia.

Qantas considering user passenger jet takes only cargo

A friend tried to send me some masks from overseas, I called up the courier's local office here to check for a timeframe on 17/3. After 30 mins waiting, the operator said last batch processed at the customs was 10/3. Nothing is moving because there're no flights, and she couldn't even guess when.

        • so you believe what you got told for your courier company and apply for everything?

          • @SnoozeAndLose: It could well be the case that the particular courier had been singled out, or the country of origin. That's why it's easier to ask the store owners.

Yeah right. Lives in his own fantasy world, no doubt had personal shoppers delivering his groceries while he sat at home twiddling his thumbs with no idea what was actually happening in the supermarkets.

    • he's just pissed that he's been in isolation for the last couple of weeks and missed out on the opportunity to hoard stock. regaine is all sold out at chemist warehouse now

I mean if raising prices a little keeps a small business in business I think they should do whatever they can to protect their livelihood.

Caltex on the other hand still charging $1.60/L for petrol is ridiculous

    • Where's that? My local Caltex is charging $1.25 for Vortex 95.

I've had enough of this! People are selling tissue papers, hand sanitisers, masks and other essentials for absolutely ridiculous price on gumtree and ebay. THIS HAS TO STOP!

Now that AFP is going to crack down on them, what can we do to help them? How can we report these people? We can easily get their details of gumtree and report them. I've already started to make a list!

The toilet paper factories can churn out much more toilet paper than these profiteers can hope to store. The amount of bums that need wiping has not fundamentally changed. At some point these fundamentals will cause the implosion of the toilet paper black market empire and we'll see the great toilet paper price crash of 2020. Half price toilet paper specials for the next 2 years..

      • The amount of bums that need wiping has not fundamentally changed.

People seems to be sh!tting themselves more often these days though.
But I agree, it’ll calm down eventually and everyone will have more TPs than they know what to do with.

Majority of the people agreed on ozbargain that it is immoral but not illegal as no laws are broken. It's supply and demand. So I am keen to find out what laws they are breaking.

Disclaimer: I believe they should be stopped

Nothing can be done. Vote with your wallet and never go back there and tell all your friends who share the same view point.

I’ve seen hand sanitisers go for like 50 bucks for a 500ml bottle and it’s a rort.

  • Merged from Price Increases during Covid -19

    Hi,

I just saw the price of this monitor go from $700 to $900 in 2 days

Have you seen similar price increases?

    Kogan 34" Ultrawide

    • Yep. This monitor was approx. $259 a few weeks ago and is now $399. Ridiculous!

  • I believe there are two reasons for the price rise, one of them is the decrease in the price of the Australian dollar. around 20% against Chinese Yuan most of products are actually paid for in supply end.

  • Petrol in Darwin is still 123.5. I saw today in Palmerston it has finally dropped to 116.5 at Coles Express. Why is it under $1 in all the other states but not here???
