Thoughts on This Mini-ITX Build?

G'day,

Looking to build a Mini-ITX system and Partpicked the below.
System is almost purely for Gaming.

Your thoughts on the build?

Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA G3 650 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply
Case Fan: NZXT AER RGB 2 52.44 CFM 120 mm Fan
Case Fan: NZXT AER RGB 2 52.44 CFM 120 mm Fan

Taking GPU from Previous system & 2TB WD Black Drive
PSU Could be lesser wattage but i prefer the extra buffer just incase

Cheers

  • Why not sell the 1070?

    • Good Idea, although waiting for sale on current gen, so for time being it's quite a decent GPU still @ 1440p

3700x is probably overkill for gaming only.

3600 with a high end aircooler like a noctua d15 or Dark Rock pro 4, will give you the same gaming performance, and will save you over $250, which you could put towards a better GPU- which is where you'll see the real performance increase.

For the SSD as well, The Adata XPG SX8200 PRO is identical gaming performance and cheaper.

    • I was definitely considering the 2 CPU's and went with the 3700x as
I like to play around with Virtual Machines and sometimes stream/produce video.

For the cooler, i wanted something with a bit of Bling, as the Case has a side window on the panel, allowing to see through on the RGB spectacle lol

That SSD has great reviews and is cheaper! Will swap it in

Yeah fair call, be aware that the NZXT case isn't the best when it comes to thermals, and the 3700x runs quite hot.

Shout out if you need a hand though, SFFPC's are my jam. Just built in a NCASE M1 and a NODE 304

        • Can confirm the H200 (non I) with a 3700x and the noctua D-15 runs hotter than I expected, checked it against an AIO loop stats and it runs around the same.

I wish I could have swapped the glass panel to the other side but I made it work for me.

I put a 5 inch screen where the 2.5inch hdd drive bay goes and it looks awesome.

If you decide to use a bigger air cooler be sure to check your mobo CPU positioning, with my gigabyte board and the D15 I couldn't fit ANY fan in the top or rear of the case, luckily the D15 is close enough to the exhaust grill.

          • @raiyani: Show Pics!

            • @Godric: Here you go, one of the glass side (glass taken out because of reflections). https://imgur.com/a/4Y1DhwZ

Some parts were a bit of a pain because the D15 is just huge and the nzxt cooler I picked for the GPU was too big for the case due to the PSU shroud, but was saved by a dremel and luckily I had a SFF PSU

              • @raiyani: Holy hell that thing looks huge in that case lol, good to see you packed in everything in the end.

What GPU have you paired it with?

                • @Godric: I have a GTX 2080ti with it, I mess around with VMs and some editing here and there too so I went for 32GBs of RAM, plus some gaming.
In saying that I'm idling at 39% RAM usage and i'm not really doing anything.

                  Here's my pcpartpicker https://au.pcpartpicker.com/user/raiyani/saved/#view=8D76RB

I really didn't need the x570 mobo since I don't use the PCIe 4 SSD but thought why not, maybe it'll be a bit more future proof.

I just built a mini itx with RyZen 5 3600, 16gb ram and a 5700xt for an all amd build. Went with a Noctua cooler.

    • What Case did you build inside of?

Never mind just seen your reply to HaD,
      Slick Case

  • If all you are doing is games, I would drop the Samsung Evo plus for a standard Evo or buy an OEM like Pioneer and go for 1TB instead of 512gb.

  • Check that the shops still have all these parts in stock.

But yeah per others, a pure gaming build should basically have half its price in the GPU otherwise you're wasting money on everything else that will be bottlenecked by that GPU.

It's a nice system but a 3700X build should be paired with a 5700XT or RTX2070 (or thereabouts, you get the idea). Or step down a CPU level, and use that to upgrade the GPU.

    Edit: I like notanaudiophile's mix:

    RyZen 5 3600, 16gb ram and a 5700xt

Thanks - granted i have a 2TB SSD - its the cheap INtel 660p NVME. I went for 3200 16gb ram, and a Powercolor Red Dragon 5700XT, all built in a Loque Ghost S1 case.

      • Oh that is a nice clean looking case. Damn that gives Fractal a good run (or a beating) for minimalism.

        • Im thinking of getting a ryzen 3600 or 9600kf, 16 GB ram and 5700XT/2070 super/2080 super.
The hardest part is selecting a case in Aus. Leaning towards having it build by Umart who have a few ITX cases like lian li tu150 and Inwin A1 plus. I'd prefer the Ncase M1 or Ghost S1 but they are way to expensive, no build warranty in Aus and GPU limiting. Do you think the Umart option with the lian or Inwin would suffice?

          • +1

@Leeroy123: Between those two I'd go with the Lian-Li - from when I was still much more involved and up to date on the scene, they were basically god-tier for design and quality, if not always the easiest to build in. With Umart to build it for you though, that's not as relevant to you.

And yes, to directly answer, they would definitely suffice, unless you have any special need for things like sound proofing, etc.

    • Will do, going through eBay for most components.

My thoughts behind picking the 3700x, I like to play with Virtual Machines & sometimes stream/produce video, although it's not all the time i rather have the power and not need it then to need it and not have it, and i'm not too constrained in terms of a budget.

For the GPU, 1070 is still quite decent for 1440p @ 60fps/high settings (EG Doom), how ever when a sale hits for current gen GPU's will look to upgrade.

      • +1

Yeah fair - I personally also like keeping parts that have served me well and upgrade later, than selling and upgrading more often.

And VMs and video rendering will definitely benefit from the 3700X. (Streaming would be fine either way).

  • +1

It's fine, a safe choice for all components all-in-all. The 3700X is around $420 on Computer Alliance eBay, which is a good deal. At that price, I'd go with the 3700X over the 6 core parts.

  • +2

You asked for my thoughts, so I'll give them to you.

Buying ITX, liquid cooling and additional fans is silly. Unless you're living in a caravan, why do you need to save on case space? You're paying $150 extra to be unable to fit two HDDs. If you intend on actually putting the PC in your sight, the blue glare of the LEDs will simply become an unwelcome distraction

Full size ATX, big heatsink, and lid off if need be. Cheapest mobo with adequate slots/ports you can get. Put that $400 you just saved towards storage, or otherwise gamer food; you're gonna need it. Tempted to recommend buying a state-of-the-art monitor, but 4k/'HDR'/larger screens are just gimmicks that will likely just impair you. Because of this, it's not the time to upgrade GPU from the 1070.

    • All thoughts welcome!

My use case for this system is gaming, the only storage required on the system are the games and some other apps, have my storage taken care of else where on another system.

Reasoning behind the AIO: Looks cool, I'm buying a case with a side window and I'm blinging it up a bit. Also the case has room for 1 3.5" which is under the shroud, the AIO doesn't impede it.

Agree with you on the GPU, I'm fine with 1440p!
