Supermarket Catalogues The Next Victim of Covid19?

Seems like we may have lost supermarket catalogues for now?

Woolworths - No new one this week at this stage. Usually 5pm on the dot
Coles - No change from last weeks 'no Catalogue'
IGA - usually early Monday. No change from last weeks yet.

I get it. But a shame as well.

p.s. I meant the online versions. But yeah paper ones would def be gone I say and they prob should have years ago

And what about all those touch screens at the self-checkouts? I haven't seen anyone cleaning them after each use?

      wear gloves.. gozhsss

    • +15

Clean your hands don't expect the world to be sanitized

      • +3

yeah. he expects the supermarket will hire someone to constantly wipe the screen each time? really? like personal maid…

        • +1

Today at woolies they had someone that cleaned the area - i dont know if it was after each person but someone was spraying down the machines - first time i have ever seen it

        • To be fair when I used to work self checkout I would meticulously clean every surface when I was able to. Even in peak I would get to a register before a customer go wipe them down. I’d get to each machine at least every 10 minutes.

They had someone at Myer Rundle Mall wiping the lift buttons on Sunday.

What I would love to see is a conversion of all toilets to the Adelaide airport sysyem - no entry or exit doors, just on the booths, so after you've washed and dried your hands, you don't touch anything.

Well they should hire more staff, they make big big profits!!!

Have a look at the staff ratio now compared to 15 years ago

I have my little sanitiser bottle and rub some into my hands as I leave the supermarket.

      • How much u wanna sell it for?

    • There's a solution in the works - it might not kill viruses, but is antimicrobial!

Woolies plan catalogues atleast 18 weeks in advance, so they must have decided specials are not needed given that everyone is buying anyways.

From a practical point, they are having trouble keeping stock levels, let alone promotional product.

    But yeh.. shame.

    • Aldi is stills spruiking, though. We got W&C catalogues last week.

  • There'll be specials, but not advertised through catalogues. Find yellow stickers instore only.

    • Both woolies and Coles? Or woolies removed all special?

    • +2

Some Ozbargainers will be going the extra mile to document the specials this week!

      • I am only interested in giftcard deals if any.

  • Given that coronavirus can apparently survive on surfaces for hours, do you really want to bring something made out of plant fibre, with a huge surface area to volume ratio, from unknown people who're outside much more than average…. into you own home to hold and read?

Just quarantine you catalogues until the virus dies.

Has it occurred to you that the virus may also be all over your shopping as well? Like that pizza you just had delivered?

There is a certain schadenfreude knowing people may have caught COVID-19 from that pack of dunny roll paper they rushed out to buy.

      • Lol.

But I haven't bought delivery since this started - honestly, food prepared by someone else is bad enough, food prepared by someone else, then delivered by yet someone else?

        No thanks…

        • +1

A lot of people haven't twigged that deliveries might not be safe.

The virus can last a few hours in the air, a day on cardboard (the pizza leftovers are still a worry) and 2-3 days on plastic & steel.

Remind me to go & disinfect my change from Woolies.

          • @D C: Right? No offence to anyone, but I don't think someone who needs (or wants) the money from Ubereats delivery work to voluntarily give that income just because they're feeling a little unwell.

  • Have they stopped online catalogues?

    • Yes, due to fluctuating stock levels making it too difficult to guarantee availability.

    Look behind the couch.

rather starve then pay full price at the supermarket

  • +1

Thank heavens, straight in the yellow bin anyway.

  • Who reads the paper version? I look at the electronic versions. The pricing on the shelves can’t keep up, anyway. We found out that Fancy Feast Royale was on special because we bought 5 and the discount applied, it wasn’t ticketed at the shelf.

  • Waste of paper anyway.

  • So how does a person that shops at both stores plan ahead their shop this week? (and yes, I know ALDI is cheap but we don't have that in Tassie). I don't want to pay full price and I don't want to wander both stores for ages looking for specials.

    • +1

Once both stores update their online pricing the half price items/sales items on Wednesday every will be visible through their own sales pages and via pricehipster.

We just won’t be able plan from 5pm Monday

  • Pfft, I've been taking my junk mail from the letter box using my left hand then opening my bin with my right hand deposit said junk mail in bin, return into house opening door handle using clean bin opening right hand proceed to sink and wash hands for 132 seconds.

    Am I doing it right?

    • +1

      Actually yes.

There's a MythBusters episode where they have a dinner party to show how a contaminant was spread (UV reactive or something).

Obviously they didn't tell the cast, and at the end everyone bar Kari Byron was covered in it. She said she was germophobe, and really distrusted anything handled by others.

      • Ha, that's me. While I wrote that as a joke. It's not far from the truth.

        • Oh good. I was going to point out you opened the bin with the right hand haha.

          • +2

@HighAndDry: Yes, that was to highlight that in this crazy situation myself a germophobe would trust my bin germs more than a letter in my letterbox.

        • +1

Mythbusters episode I was thinking of: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wPKBpk7wUY

Not quite as I remembered it (as usual), 1/2 of the guests were actively trying to avoid getting sick. Kari Byron still won though.

Woolworth's catalogue is now available on their app

Only 9 pages though - mainly Easter items.

    • And most of the items that aren't Easter are just normal prices and not reduced at all. Very special!

Just noticed that Coles catalogue is also available
