Beer Expiration date

Morning

just got meself some carlton dry from last deal, the box looks pretty worn out and discoloured and expires in sep 2020. From the date of manufacture how long do they usually last 6 months, 1 year, 2 years. 6 months is just a bit shorter than expected considering its 30 cans.

Edit: How's corona, was gonna buy that first but then bought this instead
Edit2: Damn it, bought the wrong ones, is not carlton dry is hahn super dry that taste good, carlton dry taste crap

  • According to Google. Beer lasts 6-9 months. If it's refrigerated, up to 2 years.

      According to Google

Is that like a slower version of OzBargain forums?

      • I had to search for it. I never thought about beer expiration because I always finish it.

        • Yep me too, 30 cans by September would not be an issue for me and I'm not a big drinker.

It was just funny how you thought to Google it but the OP didn't.

          • @onetwothreefour: i googled it but don't bother going to the beer shop to check out the expiry date

According to anecdotal evidence it may be lucky to last a week.

In my experience beer that's still sealed is safe to drink after when it's old, but the it's flavour starts going off. You can keep drinking it until the flavour is unacceptable to you. Obviously this must be within reasonable limits, but generally well past the use by date.

Once you've tasted what stale beer is like, you will easily identify what beer that's just starting to go stale tastes like.

If you want to keep it in good condition, keep it dark and keep it cool.
    so:
    - a fridge is better than a cellar which is better than room temp which is better than hot garage.
    - cans are better than brown glass which is better than clear glass for light protection

If you don't have room in the fridge, keep them in a cool part of your home and keep bottles in a light proof box.

Or perhaps you could keep drinking until the flavour is acceptable?

    • just drank a can today, beer does not taste like beer from bars, maybe atmosphere not quite sure it just taste less flavour

    6 months
It doesn’t expire like milk would. It’s 6 months best before
So after that the taste degrades but is still safe to drink.

Coopers give a "best after" date.

I found a slab of Coopers Best Extra Stout that I had forgotten about, and it was even better than usual after 6 years sitting in the garage!

Shhh don't want people hoarding all the Coopers

    • is it good, might try some next next time

I think with hoppy beers you'll start to notice the hop character disappearing…..Carlton Dry is Malt and Water, you'll be fine.

    • carlton taste quite crappy, shouldn't have bought 30 cans to try

  • Cans are usually much better as well.

    • Than plastic bottles but not as good as glass bottles. But with bottles, just need to be careful to keep them in the dark.

Generally: Tap > Glass > Can > Plastic.

Tap is out because you can't store that, unless you get the actual keg which is basically a big can…..

  • Beer is fermented already, it's safe to drink basically whenever. Keep it out of direct sunlight, heat, and temperature changes.

    • never knew there is so many eticacy in keeping good tasting beer, will do it now though

      • Basically the same as storing wine. UV light and heat (which can be from non-UV light) are the two main things that cause chemical changes.

Avoid that, and all you have left possibly is the fermentation process that created the stuff in the first place.

Got myself a few six packs just yesterday. Now to just not drink it all….

        • have you tried corona, how is it compared to this

          • @[Deactivated]: Ha! Not that big a fan myself. I've got Heineken and Sapporo right now. And maybe a few bottles of Asahi stashed somewhere.

            • @HighAndDry: love Heineken. Got a small can of Heineken no alcohol taste the same from a sample that were handed out. Tried other non alcoholic ones from other brands and they taste like juice but terrible flavour and no fizz

  • I dont think you will notice any difference with carlton dry. Drink ice cold and you wont notice a thing. Hoppy beers on the other hand tastes not so good if kept for long time.

  • You’ll be right but at this rate you will finish them by then or something else will.

    • Carlton taste worse than I expected, i was meant to buy hahn super dry, got those two mixed up somehow, hahn taste the best imo, tried it on a flight

  • If you want a decent beer, try Coopers :p
Take it from a home brewer.
My record was 1500 long necks brewed & drank in a single year,
I am into 'shine' now :p

    • Whats the step to home brewing

      • First of all, you have to work out what you want to make & drink

        • when i hear home brewing the first thing i think of is walter white and the basement meth lab

I mainly enjoy ciders like fruit

@[Deactivated]: HAHA, that's more a meth lab than a home brew lab,
with home brew we make stuff to drink,
it would work out a bit expensive to drink what Walter was making,
b4 your body shut down & you died

Here is a site where they do all sorts of home brewing,
            just don't mention my name

            http://aussiedistiller.com.au/index.php

see if you can find my apple cider recipe on that site :)
            and my black & tan recipe & my 'shine' recipe & my blackberry stout recipe;
I think I put that last one on there
