I'm more amazed Tidal is still going than the actual deal itself lol.

I changed back to Spotify recently.
My 4 month Tidal just ended today too.

The collection isn't as expansive and the app sometimes doesn't load some songs.
I did enjoy the music quality upgrade on my DAP though.

      • Exactly why I changed back, too. I didn’t listen to the top tier quality music enough for me to justify having the Tidal sub anymore.

I also didn’t really like the Tidal UI. I prefer Spotify’s, possibly because I’m more used to Spotify.

    • Yeah me too. I gave Tidal a go but the app is hopeless and that's an understatement, then it seems like it takes an eternity for the song to start playing. I could not get the app to work properly via Android Auto. A serious issue with it.

      • Damn, I thought it was just me. On iOS the app seems to work pretty flawlessly. On my Galaxy S10, the app is complete garbage. Like you said, it takes forever for songs to actually load.

        • No issues on my iOS or a 2 year old Android phone. Hi-Fi and Master quality tracks load quickly on both devices. Works fine even on and old Sony tablet.

It's actually a good service, and the artist/album search results are more intuitive than Spotify/Apple Music/et al. But it's like $20 a month normally and isn't unmetered with Telstra like Apple Music is. Worth a dollar a month though for sure.

    • +1

It's the most popular streaming service among the Hi-Fi community. The difference is quite noticeable

      • Maybe on a high-res DAP, high-end headphones and an amp, but would there be any noticeable difference if playing on an iPhone through Bluetooth headphones (Sony WH-1000XM3)? For comparison, Spotify streams at 320 kbps on "Very High" quality setting.

        • Read through this
If you can truly appreciate the difference (ABX test yourself - not just the one on Tidal) and get over its usual monthly cost, it might be for you.

However even so, it's UI is absolutely terrible. Also there's been known for an artist to only show 2 albums for one person and like 16 for another. And sharing is kinda shit too.

        • I have a hifi system and wf1000xm3, there isn't much difference on the sony

        • Your iPhone's bluetooth AAC codec will be your weakest link, even if you increase the quality of your source to lossy or hi-res.

  • Not working for me, have exisiting sub though, which ends in 2 days so will try again

    • oh good to know!

    • Hi mate,

Since you subscription expired - has it worked when you went to renew?

      • +1

        Yep, just resigned up today

  • Yeah if I have an existing sub until May, can I extend?

    • Not sure mine expired and there was nothing on my subscriptions so i tried and it worked… you can try and see if it works but mouski mentioned that existing sub doesn't seem to work.

  • It says I am ineligible for this. My subscription was set to renew today, so I cancelled it, and will try again when it does.

    • +1

To follow up on this, I tried again today and it worked. Got the family subscription.

  • +2

Got the last deal and thoroughly enjoyed it. Audio quality had been excellent.

    • How is the user interface compared to spotify? Does it work with android auto?

      • +3

User interface is terrible, search is terrible, chromecast support is terrible. Haven't tried android auto.

It's not surprising they're doing so badly. But, hey it's $5.

  • I see 2 not 4 months

    • huh.. interesting it says 120 days when you click the offer… well for me at least.

      • Premium or Hi-Fi? Usually with these deals the more expensive tier is offered for half the time.

        • Nah not on mine… both are showing 120 days.

          • @westzod: Good to know! My sub runs out at the end of the month so I'll check then, thanks.

  • It's been a while since USD$4 == AUD$5.

[edit] I stand corrected; it does only want to charge me $5.

    • yea i thought it'll be close to 10 bucks for us haha.

Just a fair warning, despite cancelling TIDAL charged me after one of these trials and I had to open a PayPal dispute to get the money back as they point blank refused.

    • Thanks for the warning.

I highly recommend removing the PayPal authorisation at the time you cancel so they can't even try charging you.

Could you cancel early and still ride the 120 days?

      • +1

I cancelled straight away after re-activating and it says mine expires after 120 days.

  • +1

Anyone else experienced this? I subscribed to the last deal and while the lossless CD quality audio is good the range of music is limited.I'm using Spotify more for that reason.

    • Agree. Tried to like it and have had many free trials the selection is limited. I don’t even have that eclectic taste. Eg no Courtney Barnett (unless this has changed since my last few trials…)

  • +1

Finally a deal from the best in the business. My used promo ran out a long time ago. 👍

  • +1

can't believe they were asking 23.99 per month originally…. must be targeting the top 0.1%

    • For real, only the ultra wealthy can afford the extreme expense of checks notes….six bucks a week.

      • Well it's comparative isn't it. Spotify, Apple Music, Google Play Music and Amazon Music Unlimited are all charging $12 a month, so how does Tidal justify charging double?

        • There are people who don’t understand proportion….

        • -2

          Well it's comparative isn't it.

Not really tbh. It's like saying Coca Cola targets the top 0.1% because why not just buy Woolies Brown Semi-Fizzed Beverage/

It's a minor amount of money so saying that it must be targeting the ultra wealthy is dumb.

how does Tidal justify charging double

Because the hifi tier is lossless flac plus some MQA, along with some exclusives like every service. People who care about those things are prepared to pay for those things. If that's not you then you aren't really affected.

        • Tidal has a comparable $12 plan for lossy streaming. The hi-fi plan offers CD-quality or high resolution streaming, hence the higher price.

    • Make sure you cancel before they charge you that much.

  • Is there a way to get Tidal to work with google home?

  • +2

I got the $1.99 deal and in spite of being a huge music fan, stopped using it after a couple weeks. The music selection isn't very large, but the worst thing for me was that the app is useless for finding new music which is similar to what I like. Either you know a specific thing you want to listen to, or you listen to one of their generic playlists.

  • It says i'm not eligible. Will try again in 4 days when my existing subscription expires.

  • Thanks OP,

Just in time as my previous 4 month for $5 expired on 22nd March and this gave me further 4 months for $5.

Also, reminder, you can sub to Tidal HiFi for same price, this gives you higher quality songs.

    • I was on an existing Hi-Fi subscription, expired then it only allows me to renew to premium (downgrade) for this deal.

Were you saying you signed up this deal for anonther 4 month on HiFi?

      • No mine was just expired couple of days earlier. So, I was able to sign up again to HiFi using this link.

  • Signed up and cancelled.

    • did you still get the 120 days or you got refund?

      • sign up and can go straight to Subscriptions area and cancel if you are worried about forgetting the renewal day.
You're good to go > after cancellation button clicked Tidal will still stream in hifi until the original renew date finally comes around.
        It simply wont renew again.

      • Still got 120 days.

  • Thanks buddy! Was enjoying lossless audio from Tidal before my trial expired and it is much better than spotify! Got the family subscription trial now.

  • +1

Thanks - worked on an expired subscription.
TIP: Choose Family HiFi option for same price and enjoy it across 5 accounts - Lossless, HiRes ..win win

  • For those favouring Spotify, it also depends on what you’re using it for.

Tidal Hifi has way better sound quality than Spotify - it’s not even close in that respect and that’s why it commands a premium (which IMO is still too expensive). Tidal’s best use is with a decent home hifi setup, despite their ads showing people with earphones etc. which I don’t understand.

The mobile UI of Spotify is miles ahead of tidal’s. You can’t even stream or cast/control the desktop/tv version from your tidal phone app which is super annoying. For phone use with no amp/dac, Spotify is good enough. Home hifi, I would suggest until their prices come down, go for tidal when their deals come out like now.

  • If you're a Pearl Jam fan the new album out this week may well be available to listen via tidal in certain apps in Dolby Atmos. Still trying to find more info but for $5 I'll take that punt.
Also may as sign up for family plan to give a login to friends and family (RRP $35/month!)

  • it's just a shame it's so dam the expensive for family plan - a vinyl + coffee a month is too much imo.

  • +2

You might want to mention in the title that this includes the family license. I signed up for $5 for 4 months of Premium and shared it immediately with 4 other prisoners.

Now to work out if it's worth connecting the app on my Pioneer Receiver or always running it through Nvidia Shield (for MQA)

  • -1

I know you can manually block artists and songs, but as far as I can tell, you cannot automatically block explicit content. This is a deal-breaker for me as I've got kids.

  • +1

Have been using it along with Spotify, Google Music since a few months using my HeadFi rig.
Between Tidal hifi ($24 single person per month) vs Spotify Premium ($12 per month single user)—- Honestly using my KEF LSX or home theater speakers (Q3020i) the difference is not as noticeable as it is with the headphone setup.

If you have a very good Headphone + Dedicated DAC + AMP, the difference is amazing and Tidal is worth.
Else stick to Spotify or google music at half the price.

Give it a definite try for $5 - its worth, rather any service is worth $5 for 4 months, but ongoing it has much lesser track selection than google or spotify

  • +1

take care with Tidal in my experience - they will very happily sign you up on a discounted trial, change you over to full fee after the trial, somehow fail to process your cancellation, not contact you in any way about how you are paying them every month.. and then when you discover they are still charging you and when their own records show you haven't been using the service, refuse to refund.

Yes, yes - buyer beware and all that, and yes, I appreciate that is the point of these bargain 'trials' and you should do screenshots of on-line transactions such as cancellation etc with them, and carefully check your bank statements every month.

But if you are one of those folks like me that doesn't always manage to keep track of monthly payments and expects that someone charging you for a service would keep in touch regarding the fact they are charging you for it, well, you really should take care. I will never have anything to do with them again.

    • Interesting… the one thing that prompted me to re-activate/search for a deal was because they sent me an email that my sub has expired lol. Did you immediately cancel sub when you did trial/offers?

    • +1

That's why I pay via Paypal and cancel the auto-renewal :)

      • And it is not processing my paypal.
        POS from the start really…

    • I've had 2-3 Tidal trials and never had an issue with them charging me after I cancelled my sub (which I did right after signing up for the trial).

  • This plan is just MYR 6 for 4 months in Malaysia (HIFI family plan). Thanks for posting.

  • My subscription ended today and still says I'm not eligible. Anyone else run into this?

  • +4

Renewed my premium subscription with this deal after previous 6months for $2 expired yesterday.
To have the Tidal promotional offer working for existing users, I find that it won't work if I just go from my existing account and subscribe, or if I go from the offer link and try to take the offer with my old account, it will ask me to register a new account instead. However if I click the offer as new user first, then open a new browser tab and login with my existing account, go back to the offer tab , I'm logged in and can continue with paying for the offer. This works on PC with my Chrome browser, I am not sure about other environment.

    • +2

Similar thing happened to me, clicking the link only gave me the option to sign up as a new user.
      I got around this by:
      1. clicking "claim offer" on the link
      2. on the next screen clicking "see our other offers" down the bottom
      3. clicking "already a user, sign in here"
Once signed in i clicked back on the browser till i got back to the "select you plan" page and picked hifi/family.
Rather than ask for me to sign in as a new user i took me to my account screen.

Cheers guys. Worked for me on an existing expired subscription.

      • Hmm I couldn't get either of these methods to work today (7/5/2020) on Chrome or Edge (new). Tidal account expired a few days ago.

  • No longer working. Page is there but redirects to 30-day trial when you click the link. Mods notified.
