Printer Recommendations - WFH and School Holidays (Budget $200)

Hi all,

I'll be working from home for the first time and with the unpredictable situation with schools, looking for a recommendation for a reasonably priced printer to print kids worksheets and all…

Have always used inkjet (which has now died) but not sure if a laser printer would be a better choice?

Basic requirement is to be able to print via Wi-Fi and a built-in scanner. Thank you

    Can't go past a Brother MFC-L2750DW

    • Thanks MrHyde. Did a quick search and seems like this is around $250. Sorry, should've mentioned my budget is a $200 max.

Are the refills for this expensive?

Maybe have a look at the HL-L2395DW which is $215 at Officeworks. But, I have no idea how it compares to the MFC-L2750DW - maybe it can't do double sided scanning or something… I don't know.

There are some more Brother laser printers below $200; but you will be giving up something like double sided printing or scanning or WiFi at that price range.

        • It doesn't do automatic document feeding, you have to manually place each page.

    • Can I print from an iPad / iPhone to this? assuming so with wi-fi

      • Yes, I have printed from my Android phone; so would assume an Apple device should also work fine.

If you go for anything other than a Brother, you're missing a trick

Sure it's a touch more expensive upfront, but when you realise that a toner does 5000 pages rather than 100 a cartridge you'll see the benefits.

Copy toners can also be bought cheaply and are much more reliable than copy ink cartridges

    • What could be a good colored laser printer option having scanner and wireless printing options?

Looking at all the feedback around how spending a bit more now saves a lot in the long run, I'm thinking of increasing my budget and going colored

  • I have this printer and it is excellent. I buy the toner online for about $30 which has enough for 3 refills.

    • Sorry for my ignorance, toner = cartridge? Then what are the refills for ?

Laser printers don't have ink catridges - they use toners. Toners last a lot longer than ink catridges and are overall much cheaper. The big toner for that printer is $150 for an original and can print about 3000 pages. The smaller toner is $85 for 1200 pages. As mentioned you can get cheaper third party toners for a lot less online.

I bought this laser printer for $38 - has wifi AirPrint and everything - plus toner is super cheap on eBay

I just use Genius Scan for scanning on iPhone

Not sure if you can find one now

    • What's it like on toner and is toner hard to come by for it?

My advice is to buy the cartridge and not the printer, also spending more now can save you in the longer run, back in 2007 i bought a Dell 5110cn Colour Network Laser Printer for $500, and it still runs till this day on the original cartridges and has survived house 7 moves in this time. the cartridges are $200 delivered for a set and last 8000 pages each colour and 10000 black.

    500 / 12 years = $42 a year

I am also a fan of the Epson Expression Premium XP series, their midrange model is the Epson Expression Premium XP-6100 is $179, and the compatible replacement ink set 6 pieces and high yield is $50 delivered

This $32 printer, bought it for similar reason because the current one’s out of ink and needed it urgently.

Wireless printing, AirPrint, Google Cloud Print.
You can even scan wirelessly to your phone.
The printer is cheaper than a new cartridge 🤦‍♀️

The problem with these cheap printers is that the catridge that comes with them will only last 100 pages or so. Then you need to spend loads on new cartridges or you keep buying new printers every 100 pages and add to the waste at the dump.

  • Thank you everyone. Will look into all the recommendations today.
