Yeah great time to do instore only deals. Jb HiFi obviously have been to the Gerry Harvey school of business lately

    • Yeah apart from the collapsed AUD you'd want to be a pollie.or health worker in the current climate to be signing a contract & spending that kinda money. Daddy's trust fund ain't worth so much any more.

  • Any guru - worth it?

    • EPP probably better

  • On the catalogue, was there any mention of the s20 (without plus) for a similar $699 like last time here? - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/521225

    • No, that offer seems to be expired. Catalogue only has what's posted and the whole S20 range at RRP, no other phones.

      • Thanks for the heads up.

  • new customers only? or can current telstra customers get this deal also?

  • -6

I don't think people should go for this on the basis of early termination. In the current climate, we should not be screwing businesses over and enter into deals where they lose money, especially not businesses that have offered support to those working from home (which Telstra has done early).

  • +2

I personally don't think its a good deal, you can get a boost 12 month prepaid sim card for $150 (they use telstra network with 120gb data per month till 31st March, otherwise 80gb data)

You can buy the S20 plus in the Samsung Education Store for $1029 (listed price $1079 and you get get further discount of $50 by signning up the newsletter)

    So in total : $150 + $1029 = $1179.

So that's $400 dollars cheaper than the JB deal.

    • +16

Must have missed the part where everyone has access to the Education store…

    • +9

Boost is great but that's 120GB per year vs 60GB per month.

    • +9

Not everyone has access to Samsung EPP prices, and 80GB for an entire year isn’t going to cut it for a lot of people, that’s 640GB less data over 12 months. Not really a comparable plan.

      • +1

we may WFH for another 6 months

    • Agreed, did the same maths in my head.

    • 120gb data per year, my bad, not per month, if you need more data maybe look for another plan

    • +1

      120g/year vs 60g/month

Whether you need that much is another story.

    • Obviously not everyone can access the Edu store, otherwise using that premise someone could say:

You can buy the S20 plus using the 50% off EPP voucher for $825

The plans aren't comparable at all either as they both provide significantly different data allowances.

      • If anyone could help me get the edu price I'd love to know how.

  • +4

hey guys, I would recommend you to check the comparison between sd865(HongKong & USA) and exynos chipset(AU version), in terms of battery life and Performance.

    There is a huge difference!!!!!!!!

There are videos on YouTube, check that out you would probably resist.

    • +6

And I'd like to introduce you to the term warranty, where a $1k plus device is a big investment for many.

We know the other is better, it always is.

But it's alot to give up.

      • Buying an overseas version of S20 doesn't necessary mean you get zero warranty, it could mean you need to send it back to the seller for the seller to arrange warranty. Certainly more annoying when you need it though.

His point is valid to be honest. Based on early reviews, it does appear this year's gap between the two CPUs has widen again (it wasn't too bad last year). He probably could have also mentioned the video auto-focus hunting issue (which hopefully can be fixed in software). 120Hz refresh rate battery life penalty is another worry, not to mention 1080p only.

One review decided to double check their results before releasing them. That review actually recommends you go for SD865 version if you want S20. Exynos version - their recommendation is wait for next year's model.

        • +1

Well I tried that trick with a big HK seller for a Gear S3…..

They kept it. Then wanted me to send videos of the problem.

There is no way in hell I'll trust an overseas company with warranty that they can get away with avoiding.

    • that's the reason i won't buy exynos samsung anymore. i like this phone, however considering what's inside and the same amount of money we paying. i'd go something else.

      • I feel pretty ripped off. Bought the s20+ 5G 128Gb (exynos) on preorder and was really looking forward to it after 2 years with a s8+ (exynos) . After two weeks with it ( and the latest firmware G986BXXU1ATCH )…

        • battery life poor (5G off, 120Hz off, AOD off, adaptive battery on etc etc). It literally drops before your eyes. Lucky to last to afternoon with average use..no not a big user)
        • onscreen fingerprint sensor sux big time. very slow and misses half the time. have tried re-enrolling fingerprints
-camera- its OK and slightly better after firmware upgrade but photos/videos in standard auto mode (beauty, filters etc off) are just not there in terms of good colours, highlights etc. The s8+ photos were fantastic in auto mode. This goes with videos as well.

So basically I paid a sh*t load of money for a device that is obviously inferior to the snapdragon version for the same money and a 2-year-old model beats it in certain areas.Like buying a ferarri here vs in other markets for exact same money yet they get a v8 and me a v6 thats slower and uses more fuel!

Just disappointed ..lesson learnt. No more exynos.

No Job thanks to virus + No assistance from government = No phone for me…
Will have to continue babying my Nexus 4 for a while longer…

    • -1

At least you can enjoy a wine…

    • +5

what do you mean no assistance from government… unemployed getting paid equivalent of $26k pa on centrelink

      • He could be a Kiwi.

        • +3

          Profile says he's from SA.

Honestly, this type of attitude is just annoying. Yeah look fair enough sucks that you lost your job and it's tough on all of us, but that whole blame game attitude honestly pisses me off.

          • +2

            @Kingfield: what attitude?
expecting to get what everyone else gets, but we don't because we've worked hard to pay off a house?
So now we're left high and dry with no income and no prospects..

            • @Krondorf: I'm not sure what you're actually referring to?

              • +1

@Kingfield: I'm referring to going to centrelink yesterday and being told i don't qualify due to owning another house other than what i live in.
Will be fun trying to eat that house to survive

                • @Krondorf: Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that they waived the asset test?

I'm not surprised though honestly, Australia has always been about the middle class bearing a disproportionate amount of the tax burden. Folks that are slightly more well off than average and responsibly save/invest will always be the last to see any benefits from the government.

                  • +1

@Kingfield: Refer to comment below ;)

                    Quote:That's what i thought too…
But centrelink yesterday said No that's not the case..
We're both out of work now, as we both worked at the same place too….

                    • @Krondorf: did they explain why?

                      • +1

@Kingfield: Yes, as above.. we own another house other than what we live in, which puts us over the limit..
But i'm thinking they don't know what they're talking about, but if they refuse to do anything about it, and just say no, you're not eligible what can we do?

                        • +1

@Krondorf: Dunno, ask for an escalation or proper explanation? All available information I can find says asset tests have been waived so yeah… Maybe there are some actual restrictions but ask them to show you.

                          • @Kingfield: I'm gonna wait till they sort their crap out and learn to communicate properly….
I have clicked the button expressing my intention to claim, so we'll see what happens

      • +2

We're considered asset rich because we own another house that we're getting ready to sell (not ready yet though)
So in reality we've only got enough $ to last maybe a month if we're lucky, then we're stuffed

So much for working hard and paying taxes all our lives…

        • I thought the asset test for unemployment benefits was currently waived. Income testing still applies.

As it currently stands, if you lose your job and your partner earns more than $1,850 a fortnight ($48,100 a year) you will not be eligible for the Jobseeker Payment.

          • @Daff: That's what i thought too…
But centrelink yesterday said No that's not the case..
We're both out of work now, as we both worked at the same place too….

Exy990 is the worst APU EVER. DO NOT BUY S20 SERIES. You'd better to get S10 series or Note 10 series.

    • whats apu
also reason why don't buy samsung
      - exynos a lot slower than snap dragon
      reason to buy exynos
      - better compatibility with hardware as made by samsung
      - better better life as its less powerful

Personally i would go for the a90 5g with sd855

      • +3

I think APU is an AMD cpu with intergrated gpu. Exynos and Snapdragon are SOC (system on a chip). Intergrates cpu, gpu, modem, audio etc on to a single chip.

I'm sure the less techy user couldn't care less about which is which and what is what.

  • +5

note10+ for $1199 is a better deal i guess. dual sim and better specs compared to note 10 for extra $200

  • does it have peace of mind if you go over your data limit? is jb hifi giving out any gift cards still?. does this s20 have 5g ?

  • I wonder has anyone been charged ETC's if they take the $400 gift card offer and cancel the 12 month $65 contract early as per their t/c s ?

  • Does JBHIFI let you have the phone while waiting for the port to take place or phone is on hold pending deactivation of current mobile service? Reading from online forums, Optus to Telstra port could sometimes take days.

    • It took five minutes.

      (Name of my sextape)

      • Took a day, was just worried with the current situation it would take weeks.

        • A day? It literally took five minutes whilst i was in JB Hifi. I walked away to browse the store as the guy said it might take ten minutes but he came and found me before I'd browsed the video games.

  • Just checked the SKU and this is not the 5g version. No deal for me as I get 3 to 4 years out of my phones these days so I would want 5g.

Disappointed to hear in this thread of the poor reviews of the chipset since I'm sticking with the Samsung ecosystem.

    • +1

Just picked one up today and it's great, coming from a S8 Plus I'm very happy with the upgrade so far.

      • Its the 4g, right?

        • +1

Yep, though I don't see 4G as an issue tbh. Perhaps if it were Voda or Optus but Telstra's has always been great.

  • Has anyone managed to get downgraded to the $45 plan after purchasing this?

    • did you manage to?

      • Not yet, thought I'd try next month. I had a bit of an issue this month already lol, I didn't realise that I didn't have international calls included, I just plain forgot as I was used to Optus and I made an hour or so of calls to my mum in the UK. I asked for a one time good will gesture as it was a genuine mistake and I have my internet bundle and two mobile services with them and they flat out refused, after a lot of back and forth I managed to get it wiped ($90.87!) So I'll wait until next month :p

  • so i went to jb hifi today and tried to do the 24hr porting over, it doesn't work anymore. you now need to be off telstra for 30 days, the guy in the store told me that if the store clerk changes you over within the 30 days they will have to pay the 700 difference themselves. Apparently when they enter your number it comes up in their system. i also have a photo of the PDF they have on the stores computer but dont know how to upload it, in the comments.

    • I just managed to sneak in a port after 28 days with Optus. With the deal ending soon, I didn't want to fork out for another month with Optus or run the risk of missing out. The chap in-store was able to swing it to work, so they must still have some wiggle room on them.

Seems like they've dropped the S20+ Deal to $649 Upfront now :)
