Telstra Mobile Broadband: up to $15 off Monthly Fees for 12 Months ($25 Plan 10GB= $15, $50 Plan 50GB= $40, $75 Plan 100GB= $60)

570

Telstra are currently discounting their month to month mobile broadband plans that are $25 and above per month (no discount on the $15 per month plan). Data allocations are pretty low but might be a handy back-up, plus there are no excess data charges. The monthly discounts are removed after 12-months of service.

Small: $25 per month for 10gb - now $15 per month (includes 5g access to 30 June 2020)
Medium: $50 per month for 50gb - now $40 per month (includes 5g access)
Large: $75 per month for 100gb - now $60 per month (includes 5g access)

  • Might wait until the release of the SE2 to see if JB will offer a decent Telstra deal.

  • Might be time to leave belong. Currently on $10 per month. Fluffing around with referral credits and data sharing has become dangerous.

    • Noting this is data only.

What a donkey. Thanks Steptoe. Is stupidness a sign of covid?

          lol.

You could dual sim this with a $5 Dodo sim. Think that's my next move.

  • Apart from having 5G mobile phone, anyone know how much is the cost of getting one of those 5G mobile modems e.g. HTC 5G Hub?

    • Try OPTUS 5G

    • About $800-1000 on ebay but only about $400 on contract from telstra itself.

  • They've been this price for a few weeks now.

can't even buy from Telstra atm. maybe in a shop though, but nothing happening online.
We use 4g at home, currently on a 100gb plan, tried to buy a 150gb plan (sim only) and it said a sim should arrive in 1-2 days, but haven't heard a thing in 2 weeks.
Problem is you can't call them - just sit on hold, and they arent answering chat either so i'm not sure whats going on

Their overseas call centres are currently empty due to lockdowns.

I’m on this plan. Note a few important things:
These plans get the 25gb bonus data (covid related) atm, but I’m not sure if it’s a one off or a recurring thing.
They get 6 months of 5G access as a trial. After that ends, I think it’s $15 pm for 5G.
The only 5G router Telstra offers is like $1000++ or something stupid. I bought their 4G nighthawk router which was around $370 from memory and I still get download speeds of 250 mbps.

If you’re eligible for the Optus 5G $70 unlimited plan, it’s much better value. But I’m not sure what the speeds / reception is like. I’m pretty peeved bc I live in Perth CBD and am not eligible for the Optus 5G plan because my address does not fall within a confirmed 5G zone. I tried to sign up, arguing I was basically on the map (on the map itself), and I would be happy if it reverted to 4G, and they tried to tell me that it isn’t capable of doing that (which I think is bs).
So I walked across the road to telstra and signed up - was really impressed by the customer service there. But their largest plan (125gb now) isn’t big enough for me now that I’m working from home and streaming a lot… so I might need to bow my head and go back to Optus on their $68 500gb 4G. Which I hate because there is 5G unlimited for $70 but I’m simply not eligible?

Also - no excess data charges. You get shaped to 2.5 mbps after you hit your data cap.

Are you referring to Telstra's peace of mind data? Sounds like that will end next month. I received this email a few days ago:

"We wanted to let you know about some important changes to your Telstra mobile and mobile broadband services happening from 22 April 2020.
        What’s changing:
        • If you go over your monthly data allowance, the maximum you’ll pay for excess data usage in Australia will be $100 a month. Once you reach $100, you won’t pay any more for data - your speed will just be slowed to a maximum of 1.5Mbps for the rest of the month.
        • You’ll no longer be able to make or receive voice calls using your mobile broadband services. You’ll still be able to use your data to make calls via apps such as Skype, but if you put your mobile broadband, data or tablet SIM into a mobile phone, you won’t be able to make or receive voice calls.
        Why is it changing?
This is all part of our responsible business program, helping our customers to avoid complex and unexpected charges. We’re committed to acting responsibly and transparently as a business, so that our customers understand what they’re signing up for and receive the value and service they expect."

I have two Telstra services, one with POM. I only got that email for my one without POM (my JB HiFi plan).

        • +2

That $100 excess data usage cap, once over your included data, only applies to voice mobile services. Mobile Broadband plans aren't affected. (Thank god)

          https://crowdsupport.telstra.com.au/t5/Services-KB/Updates-t…

          • @brizben: Thank you for clarifying! I could not find anything online and Telstra chat is down.

          • @brizben: Just double-checked my email and it actually states "Update to your mobile & mobile broadband services" and at the bottom "Your services affected by these changes are: 0xxx xxx xxx and 0xxx xxx xxx" with the first one being my JB-Hifi Telstra $45 plan and the second one a 5GB mobile broadband plan (Data Plan Extra Small).

Your crowdsupport link however states :This change only applies to the services listed in your notification. It doesn’t apply to data you use while international roaming or any of our latest in-market data plans below, as these plans incur no excess data charges:

            Data Plan Extra Small
            Data Plan Small
            Data Plan Medium
            Data Plan Large"

I guess it should be fine then. Just hoping Telstra won't hit me with a hefty bill by accident….

    • Do you know anyone within the 5G area?

      • For Optus? Nope. Checked all my family members’ addresses to see if I could register in the area. Tbh, a lot of our residences are close to the cbd / with one of them even inside the cbd. Not sure why it isn’t in the area.

        • I've been eyeing the 5G home broadband wireless coverage map for a while now and been ineligible via the coverage map and the online chat

I was curious about it so I twitter dm'ed @optus earlier in the day (saw some optus forum post saying to contact them on socials, maybe I'll have to call eventually).

and your post prompted me to talk to a guy instore just then

          https://imgur.com/a/GA7dQmM

Here's my coverage map (with street names redacted).

and no, no soup for me

          • @loke: that's painful man. sorry to see that. hahaha. how did you get such a specific map? Mine is really big with vague shadows and I can't zoom in.

            • @ts13: I've always been on the edge'ish of the coverage just eyeballing it

So when I did the online chat, I overlayed the map over a copy of my google maps and up'ed a copy to the online chat and told online chat that I'm on the fringe/edge, do something for me, same thing no dice.

I talked to an optus employee instore today who did the whole web portal/salesforce thing and was able to bring up the coverage map for me. He couldn't do anything for me either saying wait a few months etc, his own address has the issue of his place being half covered.

I took pictures anyway, the coverage maps are useful and I'm gonna try optus social medias (can't find the old forum post saying to contact them there, if you are on the edge and want to confirm), if not I'll call them some time

              • @loke: well, I gave up a long time ago - but please dm me if you have any success 😂

                • @ts13: yeah no twitter response.

I want some data to burn at home vs using my standard 230gb (phone+tablet plan).

Called Optus on the sales line, the sales guy mentioned they can't manually provide a 5G plan.

Next best arrangement, he's said that: if on a 4G home broadband plan, there's no cancellation fees to upgrade to 5G when that comes along (and to return the 4G modem).

I've went ahead with the 4G order today (as it's the last day for 20% off a 500GB plan too).

                  • @loke: Thanks for the update. I didn't know that. By

if on a 4G home broadband plan, there's no cancellation fees to upgrade to 5G when that comes along (and to return the 4G modem)

I assume you mean 4G mobile broadband plan? (As opposed to NBN)…

I actually went in on the weekend. My Telstra 125gb mobile broadband was fine when I was living alone and working, but now I have a housemate and wfh, so internet use all day + isolation = a lot of streaming, so was getting desperate. Telstra couldn't offer me any bigger plans, and Optus refused to sell me their 4G plan standalone. Would only offer it on contract (w/ included router) or month-to-month if I purchase the router - which is significantly slower than the Netgear Nighthawk I bought from Telstra.

I wasn't informed of the option to return the 4G modem and upgrade to the 5G plan. We looked at Optus' map in store, and my place is just on the outskirts. He said 5G will definitely be live at my address within the next three months, so, I've decided to wait it out.

                  • @loke: That being said, the main reason why I didn't go with NBN was portability, and inability to be at home for them to install it. Now I am at home… so could go with NBN. But I would much prefer the portability and flexibility, and reliability of 5G.

  • I'm on the $15 a month plan. I could pay off my iPad Pro to end it but I didn't think I'd need to do that until 2022. But I kinda like unlimited ipad data for $15 anyway.

    • how do you get unlimited iPad data ???

      • All Telstra data plans are now unlimited. They just get shaped, but the shaped speed is enough for browsing, tik tok, etc. Kids don't even notice when it gets shaped.

        • Have you recently received an email about your piece of mind data changing (excess charge up to $100, then capped at 1.5mbps) as per my earlier comment?

          • +1

@Hansi: I don't see how they could do that, I'm on a three year contract.

          • @Hansi: That only applies to plans that don't have no excess data charges.

        • Unlimited mobile broadband? You think the shaped speed is good enough to survive? I was gonna swap to optus, but maybe I don’t need to …

          • +1

@ts13: shaped speed is good enough to scroll through tik tok, browse web pages, even load low rez video

          • +1

@ts13: I survive for most off the month on the capped speed. Good enough for everyday surfing, skype etc. Download App updates, videos and music over night and you're good to go the next morning.

            • @Hansi: Interesting. I have to work on it though, so not sure it’ll cop it. I have a spare now, so maybe I’ll run my telstra to the ground, and see what the shaped speed is like. Cheers for the input.

  • Question i have 2x $15 5gb Sims
Can I switch them to the new 10gb $25 then get$10 off both bringing them back to$15

  • Those who went for the 500$ in jbhifi gift card plan (60gb) for 65$. Can they get it reduced further? ( got mine reduced from 65 to 55 previously)

    https://www.telstra.com.au/small-business/internet/mobile-br…

here is the plan details - if you're a business - same price no lock in contract - ie $15 for 10GB p/m for 12m

  • Do you get data rollover?

Tempted to switch as our new house is 4g
For some annoying reason I can only get optus 3g :(

I was going to go with boost ($70 for 65gb data rolls over)
    But this is probably better

    • No data rollover.

Please read the critical information summary on the website..

  • Anyone used this on a solar VPP? Simply energy claim 4G isn't fast enough?

    • Sounds unlikely. Could be the latency?

I think they will only support what is on their spec sheet but 4G should be OK (smart meters run on 4G).

      • Smart metering..4G… interesting!

  • so does the 10gb plan come with POM and no excess data charges or is it only for voice plans have Peace of mind?

    • Go on the link provided. Says no excess data charges in AUS.

      • thanks though I read somewhere it had a $100 maximum fee if you go over which is starting in late April but must of been the Jb hifi offer as I don't think they have POM?

        • Yes applies to any plan without free excess data.

  • Still havent posted my new sim out 1.5 weeks later :(
