WFH Monitor Recommendations

Hey All,

My workplace has transitioned into working from home for the foreseeable future. As someone who hasn't had to buy a monitor since 2010, reading through past deals and forums has left me a bit lost.

Job role: CAD based and Excel, using work supplied laptop.
Gaming: Nil
Size: 27-32"
Budget: ~$500

Popular monitors I've seen mentioned include the LG 32UK550, Viewsonic VX3276-2K, AOC Q3279VWFD8.

Cheers

  • You can't go wrong with such a huge budget for a non-gaming monitor. Maximise size and viewing area, don't worry too much about response/refresh rate. The Dell and Samsung non-gaming offerings are very pleasant, but you are paying for the name a little bit.

Consider an ultrawide one? I bought a new monitor - LG 29 inch 21:9 monitor - was under $300. Couldn't quite yet justify the even larger/wider ones at this stage.

It's the same height as a regular 23 inch monitor but has the extra width which is helpful. Almost like having 2 screens (plus my laptop screen)

      • be careful.. your work supplied laptop may not have the resolution to support ultrawide.

        • thanks I'll have to confirm that

@jewboy: If your laptop is made in the last half decade or so it should have no problems handling 2560 x 1080. It's not a very high resolution either — it's just a slightly wider 1080p.

I got the AOC monitor you've listed for CAD work for a home office and it's been good value for money.

  • I'd consider a gaming monitor. 144hz on the desktop is bloody amazing compared to 60hz. You'll find it hard to go back. Mouse movement is so much better.

Honestly I think 144hz made a bigger difference for me in day to day work desktop stuff than it did in gaming.

    If you don't need 4K I'd consider the LG 32GK650F-B - 1440p 144hz

  • i'm using dual 27 inch monitors for my CAD setup at home as well as laptop

Why aren't you just taking your existing monitor from work?

Would assume it's pretty standard for companies transitioning their staff from office to WFH would let them take their dock/keyboard/mouse/monitors home to help them continue their work.

    • Couldn't get it to connect to the work laptop in my case

    • Hey SBOB, very valid point. I guess as a bit of a side note, going forward I would have the opportunity to work 1-2 days at home a week. The monitor purchase would be with this in mind.

  • Happy here with LG 32UK550 at home and work. Don't get a curved ultrawide if you're doing excel.

  • I bought one of these for WFH

Turns out my laptop only does 4k at 30hz. So I had to set up my intel Nuc I had lying about. That one does 4k at 60hz

The text clarity of this monitor is great. I can use it at 100% DPI! At 60cm from my face

Ignore 10b panel or hdr features or above 60hz refresh rates unless you're absolutely sure your computer can support it

  • I'm using an AOC Q3279VWF8 (think its the model before the Q3279VWFD8 you mentioned).

Great clarity, brightness and contrast, and easy on the eyes.

I think 32" is good for 1440p too, wouldn't go any bigger at this resolution though.

  • What about something 24-27in and sub $250?
