Non resident losing their job, will there be any welfare support for them?

Hi all,

Asking for a friend here, she is not an Australian but she is living here under a working visa as a baker. She's at risk of losing her job and she is worried about keeping up with her rent so thought i'll ask here.

What options are available if a non resident loses their job due to the current situation? Can Centrelink provide any support at all?

thanks

I'm a tax paying citizen of nearly 10 years and I'm not getting a dime.

I couldn't be bothered reading the whole post. But has anyone mentioned or considered Australians working and living in other countries and also not getting financial support? If all the countries could agree in providing financial aid irrelevant of citizenship/permanent resident status then your friend might be able to get aid. For example an Australian living and working is stuck in Taiwan and isn't getting financial assistance, then why should the Australian Govt be giving money to non-residents? Did that make sense?..

Edit: This is the time to strongly consider just flying home. I was living and working in the USA, they aren't going to give me any benefits, so I came back to Aus to ride it out.

Any Australian who need help in Taiwan will contact the Australian embassy at the first thought. Not the Taiwan government.

I don't understand the entitlement thinking for these non Australian residents.

I don't understand why Virgin believe they are entitled to $1.4bn. Then Qantas is opposed but wants $4bn+.

Everyone feels entitled to tax payer money because the face less tax payer is a victimless crime.

It doesn't make sense - that's exactly why the aus gov will do it eventually!

      • But the whole point of being a citizen or permanent resident of a country is so you have access to the benefits of that country, like social welfare..

  • OP , you're friend will be able to access early super as from the 25th of April if she chooses to stay.

  • How about we open our borders to 48 million UNHRC refugees. Double that with all the sickies from Pacific 3rd world.

  • "Treasurer Josh Frydenberg has encouraged foreign workers who are not eligible for government support when they lose their jobs to consider going back home overseas.

“If there is no work for them, they can go back to their home country, that is an option for them,” Mr Frydenberg said on ABC Insiders on Sunday morning."
