Credit card recommendations... Not frequent flyer

I'm currently collecting Virgin Australia points and it's been successful at getting me flight upgrades etc.

But it's probably not worth collecting these for a while and I'm looking for a new strategy..

But I have no idea where to start..

-Low interest.. don't care, never pay interest.
-Points on Qantas… No point, have no status and they're too expensive.

Which leaves Amex and Coles MasterCard for Flybuys.. both equate to money off balance or supermarket points..

What else is out there? Any other strategies?

28 Degrees Mastercard. No international transaction or currency conversion fees. No annual fee.

    • International currency conversion.. interesting! Hand thought of that as a feature.

You can always collect flyer points for the sole purpose of selling them

    No need to use them

    • I'm suggesting that virgin is likely to go bust, and the points will be worthless..

      • Then get Qantas.

        • I have no status, and despite not wanting to spend 110k points on a one way upgrade to LA (45k on Virgin), no status means I won't get it anyway.

  • Just get the fee-free card from whomever you're currently banking with

That feels like I might as well just use my debit card..

      • Well you said you weren't looking for points. In general if your strategy is to just get $ off your supermarket shop, it'll be hard to justify the fee.

        • I am absolutely looking for points, just not FF points.

          • @Niko123456: Then it's best to collect FF points and then find some way of selling them. They are the only points really worth collecting.

  • I can recommend Amex. Definitely get my money’s worth every year.

    • In the statement credits?

I had one a while back but they changed their point structure and it wasn't worth it.

Or have the special offers bounced back?

      • Yeah travel credits, decent points, great customer service, free additional cardholders, great app, travel insurance.

Just the travel crédit bit Almost makes it break even for me.

Granted the offers aren’t as massive as they once were, but it is still good value.

If you are serious about rewards, you should consider Anz black or travel adventures, I remember I got back more in vouchers as point redemptions that year I held that card than any other card.

  • I recommend Kogan Black VISA & AmEx Essential.

  • Latitude Infinity Rewards, can redeem points for gift cards

  • Amex Essentials card + CUA Platinum Brisbane Heat Mastercard, both earn points and no annual fee when I got them anyway, looks like the CUA card now has an annual fee after the first year.
