Update about dodgy seller and buyer wins :) - I Can Not Believe This Could Happen on eBay

Latest update

hey ppl,
thanks for replying to my post -

i have opened a case with PAYPAL and they actioned so fast and gave me 100% refund back!

in my original post, i have mentioned that i sent seller a message to refund 50% , and seller scammed me to close the refund request and refused to refund afterwards and he said he never received the 50% refund request. very odd thing, i can not find the message sent to seller about this even in my sent box item.

luckily ebay is able to trace back all the communications and proofs that i did sent the message and the seller did get it! i don't know what the dodgy seller did, it actually disappeared from my send item and never found…and ebay also found out the location of the seller is overseas not as described within Australia, as seller is being dishonest and dodgy, i got 100% money back and i don't need to send back the item.

my lesson learned : don't close off any dispute request until you get refund. if you have a genuine reason, ebay will protect buyer interest.

Hi Guys,

I purchase some masks on eBay this month. The seller described the item as medical level. When item arrived, I found out it's just normal household masks it's not medical level.

So i contacted the seller and opened the refund request. Seller admitted it's not medical, and he wanted offer $20 off.I asked for 50% refund and he agreed and asked me to close the case. As he said paypal is freezed during dispute, he can not do partial refund until i closed the case. (I dont have much experience trading on Ebay) So i closed the case.

today i asked him about the 50% refund. he said he never received any request for 50% refund. he has only agreed to refund $20. So i went to my "sent" folder, it's very odd that message has gone in the sent box. every other message i sent to him is there except for that one!!! and i had a look again on the email he sent to me to confirm okay to refund, he replied on the previous thread with post tracking stuff and not my actual message!!!

I don't know how could this happen?! Not sure if any of you had experienced this before?

100% your fault for closing the case thus liberating them from any further action required. Lesson learnt.

In future, return the item and get a full refund.

    • Yes lesson learned. I have raised dispute with PayPal see how I go

    • +3

      100%?
Majority, sure, but 100%? No. Maybe 90%. Some blame has to go on the seller for being a devious crook, and on paypal for setting up such a difficult system.

    • Worst case scenario, it is only 87% OP's fault. At least 19% is vendor's fault, 5% eBay's fault, 92% PayPal's fault and 23% our fault.

  • Are all these messages sent from ebay or your email?

    • From eBay. But I don’t understand where is the message gone?

      • +1

That's why big and 'special' sellers have eBay account managers - to make issues go away, in the seller's favour of course.

I've had delivery dates magically extended when items purchased haven't arrived by the original date.

A good, and hopefully not too expensive, life lesson for you OP.

Take screenshots of everything and follow eBay/PayPal rules to the letter.

  • Yes, it happens all the time.

Never close the case until you have received the refund. EVER.

Just moved on. We have much bigger problem now, the cov19

Not only you got scammed once, but twice.
Next time please read the messages and instructions given by eBay & PayPal after you opened a case. It’s very informative in telling you what needs to happen and what will happen after you close the case.
Lesson learnt, how much was the total cost?

I am now stuck with stock

I thought you were going to donate them somewhere they are needed?

    • +6

I am now stuck with stock I cant sell

      Good.

    • +3

Yes it is pretty funny that it has happened to you, now that you mention it.

Ebay is the dregs of society. It will be much better when Amazon drives them into dust.

Ebay is the dregs of society.

      What's Gumtree then?

But seriously, eBay is a mixed bag of sellers but most are good and you're safe as a buyer if you follow all the rules. As a seller, you're more likely to have issues with aweful buyers. That's my experience anyway. Not sure why so many are so keen on having Amazon rule supreme.

      • Outcasts of society.

      • I now feel buying on eBay is like trying your luck

      • Ebay doesn't give a shit about anyone except whoever pays them fees. They're never on the customer's side and make it difficult to get help. Amazon is easy to get help and refunded if a seller tries to fleece customers.

        • I’ve found the opposite, eBay is biased towards the buyer and against the seller. Paypal even more so.

Buy from him again, open PayPal dispute, ask for full refund. Boom - there's your 50% (2 for price of 1)

Just wear 2 masks at a time. Be about as good as a medical grade one.

      1 mask is not very comfy. 2 i don’t think I can’t breath lol

  • what are they 3 ply or 1 ply

    • they are 3 ply

      • -2

I believe 3 ply are sufficient, thats my opinion anyway

        • Even with 3 ply, there are different levels of protection. He sold the lowest protection level which is is like dust proof no function of virus and bacteria proof. The main thing is that he claimed this to be medical level which can filter at least 95% bacteria and virus which is totally misleading. I can’t image how much profits he had made for selling these ( I am sure he’s making 100% profit of claiming these medical instead of normal household level)and lots people still don’t know what they got are not what they are told. Now due to my inexperience of operating eBay stuff, it seems like I can’t get the money back, this is a typical dodgy play of a seller manipulating a buyer. It goes to a grey area now … the dishonest seller can continue to sell what they claimed to be medical mask and making lots of money

          • @moonmoon2019: If the middle layer is melting when you burn it then it is BFE >95%, should be ok

            • @SnoozeAndLose: the funny thing is that seller actually did reply to me say " sorry" when i said this is not medical mask. then he suggested $20 refund ask me to keep them…. so he has admitted this not medical level.

              • @moonmoon2019: Because he is not sure or he doesn't have certificate to provenor he got it for a very cheap price. Price went down as China Factory is up and running again from 2 weeks ago

                • @SnoozeAndLose: i guess the cost for this level mask probably 30 cents each if the volume is big even less & he is selling them for $1 each….

          • +2

            @moonmoon2019:

filter at least 95% bacteria and virus which is totally misleading.

The masks won't filter anything unless is has a proper negative or positive pressure seal. 3 ply medical masks have neither.

The whole internet is conspiring about masks. I am making a flyer to try and sell my stock and I just looked at the file, it saved as maks. Am pretty sure I did not make a typo

    • On EBay? I think maybe they don’t allow new seller anymore?

      • not for mask ads, no

  • +1

If you sent the messages via eBay then there will be a copy of all messages in your account under the "messages" tab

  • +1

Everytime I have a dispute of anykind, it does not matter if it is with eBay or the bank or with the telco or anything,
I take screenshots of everything and put it in a folder with all the paper work and notes of times of events,
they won't pull the wool over the eyes of this little black duck - quack

  • not that you can't change some bullshit decisions from eBay, but click the tab that sends you an email message when you send a message… that way you've got a copy of the message that can't be removed/deleted

  • +1

Sounds like a perfectly believable thing to have happened on ebay.

  • +1

I had this issue with ebay app whilst replyig - prolly that msg was never sent to buyer. Always better to reply via email account which has its local copy.

  • -2

I have made some flyers and now have to stick them places thanks to Ebay letting me buy something and then not letting me sell it, really pulled the rug out under me

    • Eat a dick.

      You bought masks off ebay

You tried to sell the same masks on ebay for a profit having not added any value to the product yourself.

Your whole goal was to buy something, increase the price to make a margin then sell on the same platform you bought it from?

Go back to your other thread complaining about the masks you're stuck with. Oh wait, you asked for it to be closed because you were getting roasted right…

      • well thats not strictly true. I bought lots of 100, waited the three weeks, for them to be sent from overseas (which the buyer was never told), them made them available by Express Post in smaller lots so the value I added was Not making the buyer wait 3 weeks, having stock here in the country and available by the next day.
And in 2 days before my ad was taken down I did get some sales so I havent lost all my money.
Why did they buy from me and not the other 4000 sellers within a few hours of my ad going up? Because of the value I add. so that shows how much you know about business. I am an experienced and reliable seller and I doubt you would have got $450 is sales in one day against that kind of competition

        • Curious. What was your cost price vs selling price?

          • @Ughhh: I did my research and found the best price before buying (for 100s)

  • and I turned down a Hong Kong order because auspost wanted $36 for Express signed post Someone in Hong Kong ordered 75 from me even tho I didnt ship overseas

  • I had no clue ebay would pull the ads because there were so many for sale, it seemed to be a normal product sold there. I am about to go out to stick up some flyers, got them printed before they shut Officeworks
