What will Covid-19 restrictions and changes mean for bargains in the next 3-6 months?

It's not that I'm tighter than a gymnasts hamstring, but I wonder what kind of bargains will drop due to the unprecedented social and business upheaval that we are going through…..

On the one hand, not moving any merch might inspire some "dump it cheap" decisions - on the other - might be a "freeze everything for now" position taken. Probably a mix. More importantly, a LOT of peoples buying power is also on hold. How does that factor in?

Any predictions on anything specific you think will happen??

Hang on. Still waiting for crystal ball to be delivered. Check back in 1-2 months.

  • maybe in 6 month u can get a heavily overstocked ex government ventilator for cheap..

  • What do you think will happen OP, your guess is as good as anyone elses.

    • I think bargains will be fewer and farther between for some time. Business has a lot of ground to make up.

    This thread will be merged..

    • Was there already a thread with this? I did look, but might have had a "man look".

  • Personally I Don't expect much to happen during covid restrictions. Not sure many retailers have the man power to deal with large volumes of orders right now.

However I'm sure many will be have their "post covid sales" when this all settles down (esp travel industry)

When the pandemic is controlled 6-12 months from now there will be a period where there is an oversupply of coffins, and there will be some bumper coffin deals as suppliers are keen to clear them from their warehouses.

I might have to spend more time on OzBargain online instead of going into an Ozbargain store

    dump it cheap

Only current stock such as Easter eggs - e.g. Myer.

No business is going to lump itself with new stock it can't sell.

  • peoples buying power is also on hold

But over 80% of people are still employed. They are not spending their money on holidays, restaurants, public transport, etc so where is that money going to now?

    • The banks eventual bail-in?

Underemployment will also spike. Everyone at our company 150 people all moved from full time to part time last week with equivalent pay reductions.

    • +3

But over 80% of people are still employed

That often means stood down without pay.

    • Many of those currently employed would be anxious, thinking whether they will be the next one having to stand down. Having mentality means some people would be spending less & saving up, and others hoarding unnecessarily.

Clearly many less toilet paper deals….

  • I have seen that eBay sellers from China have increased small value items by 10% and more… Just seeing the previous sales history shows what's the agenda about…

  • Merged from When Do The Real Sales and Catalogue Deals Begin?

I can only imagine there's been a huge drop in retail sales around the Country.

Hopefully this will result in an uptick in sales and discounts to encourage more activity.

Any guesses as to how long its going to take to start seeing some "unprecedented" sales and catalogue deals?

      You won't
Retailers are not likely to slash prices when every dollar matters more now than ever

Silly mindset. If you are going to spend money in times like these, you should be investing, not buying crap.

      • +1

It's not all crap. Some of us have kids who grow like weeds. My youngest is already complaining that shoes we bought him in December have become too tight.

    • It is a sellers market at the moment so don't hold you breath for massive sales.

If anything, the average retailer is more intelligent than the average consumer.

There was a sudden halt of retail, but switching the machine back on is going to happen much more gradually and far less instantly. That means there will be more demand than supply for an extended time. Hence, no incentive for sales.

We already saw the massive drop in "The Deal" here on OzBargain since the heyday of 2014-2016, where it's trickled down quite a bit year over year until 2019 thanks to our diminishing economy and outrageous cost of living. With 2020 being a wash, I don't expect OzBargain to return to those golden years anytime soon. But hey, at least we will get new threads about traffic accidents with MS Paint diagrams to keep us occupied heh.

        Inflation is coming! :)

I await the second coming of jesus Savas.

    • Many retailers have stood down their staff and are now refusing to pay rent and bills. They can easily wait this out and sell at RRP when demand picks up again after the lock-down.

  • Went to a Hardley normal the other day to check out their "sale".

They were throwing stuff at us, slashing prices to get us to sign on the bottom line.

We hagled for a bit, still haven't decided yet however they were going to do mattress protectors rrp $169.99 for $50 each and slash hundreds already off their sale prices

  • I reckon ozbargain gonna introduce a made in Australia tag for deals, so we know we are not only getting a bargain but supporting Australian manufacturing.

Deal have lower volumes, due to reduced manufacturing, And will be out of stock faster.

We might see some closing down sales all done online, with huge discounts for companies that didn't make it.

If an item is sold at the same price as 6 months ago, it's going to be a deal given our falling exchange rate. E.g. 4 tb Seagate expansion drive.

    • I reckon ozbargain gonna introduce a made in Australia tag for deals, so we know we are not only getting a bargain but supporting Australian manufacturing.

Outstanding idea. I hope this virus serves as a wakeup call to the west about the real problem with outsourcing your manufacturing lock, stock, and barrel out of the country. A new reality needs to be developed.
