  • That’s a very big if

Great tasting recipes but 'simple' is a bit misleading.

I mean they're not 15 minute taste.com.au recipes but they're also not bland rubbish. They're simple in that the ingredients are relatively easy to get hold of and the instructions are detailed enough with no assumed cooking knowledge.

If you're not a great cook but are interested in getting better I can whole heartedly recommend this book. Best thing I ever did for my cooking skills was start cooking out of curated cook books instead of googling recipes.

      • Best thing I ever did for my cooking skills was start cooking out of curated cook books instead of googling recipes.

I'm curious about what you mean by this. Could you please explain further? I too am interested in becoming better at cooking.

        • He means buy a book like this and use it, rather than just googling recipes and trying random ones here and there.

        • A problem I've found with recipe websites is their sorting algorithm tends to surface really middle-of-the-road recipes. I suspect it's to do with ratings - recipes with few ingredients, short cook time and which don't offend anyone get 4 and 5 star ratings because they've got nothing that people could dislike, but it means they tend to produce only palatable rather than delicious food.

Also, once I know I like the food from a specific book, I find myself more likely to try things I would otherwise skip, which means I can now cook with more ingredients and styles than I used to.

    $29 @Kmart

  • how much is it at costco?

    • $27.98, I bought it yesterday

      • Thanks - wasn't able to find it on the Costco website but posted it anyways

  • Would love to cook at home with this!!!… Damn now I gotta go out to get the ingredients… Damn they all outta stock… Back to my usual meals :(

    • boiled potatoes for days

    • If you have a herb garden then you are a long way down the track with this book. You will, probably, find things like pomegranate syrup etc still available.

The lamb and feta meatballs are so freaking good. Made the purchase worth it on its own.

Must give them a shot. I made a few of the salads, from the book, for a dinner party and they were really good as well. This was pre COVID 19. I had 12 people over for a get together. I made four salads, bought some meat from the local kebab place, made a mousse and had some chocolates and cheese. Along with goodly amounts of wine it was a success.

The next wave of panic buying will be rose harissa.

    • We've had problems buying harissa before cv19 :p

What makes this a bargain? Not clearly explained in the description. Feels like a ploy just for affiliate link sales

    • +4

Because it's cheaper than anywhere else and is a highly reviewed no.1 best seller by one of the world's best chefs? Not sure what other criteria is needed to post a cook book?

      • +3

I think they're going by the description of the bargain above. For someone not savvy in the cooking world, it doesn't actually say what it is. It's like posting the best rated mobile phone ever and the bargain description says "use it to call people".

Cool thanks. It was actually a genuine question, I didn’t understand why people are so interested in the book. #1 best seller and the lowest price it’s been makes sense! I must be living under a cooking rock as I hadn’t heard of this book before.

    • If you think you can get the book cheaper, elsewhere, then please provide some links for other people. I’ve got this book and this is a pretty good price for it. I’ve just done a quick Google and couldn’t see it cheaper, elsewhere, but providing links to cheaper places is part of the process here.

    • My favourite site for book price comparisons is booko.com.au. Checked this book here and it's definitely the cheapest going at the moment. So that meets the criterion for a bargain.

  • why is this better than google?

In your case, it may not be.

Teaches you a fair bit about relationships of food. If you have assorted stuff in your fridge/pantry, you will have more of a chance of making something worth eating without a recipe.

      • Yeah our carrots got together with the cabbages in the fridge and next thing you know their chow me in. We expect little orange brussel sprouts to be leapin out of the crisper in 7 weeks time.

        • +1

If the veggies are still there in 7 weeks time they will , probably, be leapin’ out of the crisper.

          • @try2bhelpful: or in a cucumberesque hairy puddle in the bottom

            • @cornbeef: Oh yeah, I’ve had that before too. Although one of the nastiest things was an “off” zucchini. I steamed it and the taste was horrendous.

    • If you need to ask this may not be the book for you.

  • It was an xmas gift here, I have used it a lot and will use more. I have to try the lamb and feta meat balls, thats definitely on the list.

The peach and raspberry salad is great, I get many compliments. I do use baby spinach for the leaves though.

  • Dinner last night was from this book. Stuffed and roasted zucchini. So yum.

  • I got this for xmas - it's excellent

  • Anyone where to find black garlic? ;)

  • Thanks OP, got one for vegetarian daughter with a birthday coming up.

  • Kindle version is now available and also quite cheap

  • Bought this and the Ottolenghi 10 (his top ten ingredients) for my brother for Christmas.. my brother is still raving about how awesome it is!
I found the black garlic on line and got it delivered but pretty much everything else, including barberries I bought at forest hill chase at the green grocer deli place (colonial fruit co?)

  • Any other cook books the Ozb community recommends?

    • Good all rounder by Steph - The Cooks Companion

      • +1 on that. It is the cooks bible. Great recipe for tomato relish and lemon curd. Great for techniques on jar sterilisation etc.

  • Available again if anyone missed out
