Afterpay Payment Option for Purchases between $1- $1500 (Selected Categories) @ eBay AU

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Mods: Please move to the forums if this is more appropriate there… But thought I would share here. :)

Not really a traditional "deal" but is a really good (and dangerous) initiative especially in the current climate to be able to buy goods like electronics and pay it off in 4 instalments without any additional costs to users. Was browsing a few items on my watchlist and spotted an Afterpay option which I didn't see before… so guessing it is a service they activated recently?

I for one, will now appreciate buying a $1 cable and paying it off over 2 months at 25c per payment…

    Finally on eBay!!

  • Ooof, here comes a debate about whether or not these repayment options are a good or bad thing, especially in the current climate we live in.

There shouldn't be a debate, it's specific to each individual case. I like the idea of spreading larger payments (e.g. $1,000 bicycle purchase) over 2 monthly salaries with 0% interest, but knowing fully capable of paying for it straight away.

It's just that I don't need to in one go, so retaining cash within the month. Make sense.

I mean to be fair, you just provided one side of the debate ;) But you're absolutely right in saying it's specific to each individual!

      • I prefer to just whack it on a credit card, then pay it off, and get points as well as extended warranty etc. You then also don't have dodgy companies like afterpay on your credit report.

        • Fair enough. I choose not to have a CC at all. Thankfully never needed one and no interest in collecting points for minor perks. To each their own though.

          • @Hybroid: Minor perks? I get a $100 Coles voucher every month just for swiping flybuys everywhere I go and paying all bills through the credit card. Granted it's not for everyone and dangerous for the reckless but free money can't be sniffed at.

            • @iShibby: Hmm, how much do you spend to obtain $100 voucher every month?

In 2 years living above a store, I have spent >$10,000 at Coles supermarket, $150 fill up every month at Shell Coles Express and AGL Energy bills all linked to Flybuys yet only managed 17,000 points in 2 years which is barely enough for $85 reward…

              • @Hybroid: Not much more than you but I also have my car insurance with Coles, plus the Coles credit card so we get triple points every time. We use the CC for EVERYTHING, all bills, shopping, anything. Granted we pay a small fee for the credit card each year but it's easily covered in vouchers.

We clear the CC every month so never incur any interest so you need to be on top of it.

With flybuys it's only the gift cards that are worthwhile in my opinion as most goods/experiences are overpriced.

@iShibby: Credit cards are a bad idea, you will never convince me to get one.

      Okay, I want to start.

Many people don't realize that the Afterpay model is really solid. Without going to deep into it, purchases can only be made between $1-$1500, so the max is $375 every 2 weeks. However, for some products with higher risks, Afterpay makes customers pay the installment on the spot. So what this means is on a $1500 product, you will need to have $750 ready in the first 2 weeks and if you fail to make the payment when the two weeks are up, no more purchases with
Afterpay and they will cap the penalties charged on products reasonably low when you account for time value of money.

This makes Afterpay a great way to introduce people to personal debt because the repercussions are not impossible to come back from and Afterpay is quick to adjust to individual spending so that consumers are not allowed to make multiple big purchases without getting stopped. Overall, if anyone wants to borrow to pay for something, Afterpay is actually great.

        Hi afterpay marketing department.

If afterpay had such low interest, fees etc, it wouldn't be making millions in profits.

        • Not to take either side, but I have to wonder what Afterpay's profit margins are like when compared to credit card company profits.

        • +1

You do know that Afterpay takes a percentage of sales form retailers and makes majority of their millions from there right? From a risk management stand point, $10 for missed payment for almost anyone to use is a default nightmare if they weren’t making so much from charging retailers. Which is the point I’m trying to make.

  • I can understand restrictions for all of those categories except:

    Phones & Accessories
    Mobile Phones
Vehicle Parts & Accessories > Vehicle Electronics & GPS
Video Games & Consoles > Video Game Consoles

    Why are they not allowed?

    • if allowed, then every teenagers on the street will walk with $2000 iphone pro max and $800 apple watch.
      and…. next week, centrelink…..

      • @chimot are you an idiot?

    • Ebay likely dominates these markets and doesn't need to be anymore competitive.

  • i just tried this actually and received an error. I have another another afterpay payment that is pending but it is not overdue. So, I couldn't figure what happened.

  • Not beehhddd eBay

  • Alright, I'll start.

    What's the discount?

    • The interest you accrue not paying for goods in full straight away.

  • also we can't use afterpay with Paypal ( I don't know if it makes sense to use them both or would it be possible though) so, you might wanna need paypal's customer protection and free return option unless afterpay offers these.

    • Don't Ebay offer customer protection?

  • Did a payment like this earlier this morning for a new CPAP mask to test it out - first payment is taken instantly which isn't an issue but for other stores once you have an established Afterpay account first payment is taken 2 weeks from purchase date.

    • I also made a purchase to test it out.

…but then after a week, the seller cancelled my order - and sent the refund to PayPal (because PayPal is how the seller actually receives the AfterPay Payment).

It's only been a day - I'm assuming that PayPal will now push that refund back into my AfterPay account. The first payment was already taken instantly at purchase time, so not sure what will happen from here !

      • Bit odd the seller gets the Payment to their Paypal, but I assume that's how eBay run it so it just adds another layer of protection if anything (hopefully) When I've had refunds before from other Afterpay I generally receive an email from AP saying refund successful and a couple days later it's back in my account, so hopefully the process is the same!

As for them taking the first payment on the day, I actually discovered this is a change from Afterpay while all this COVID19 stuff is going on, so it might possibly return to first payment being 2 weeks later one day, or it might not, not too much difference anyways to be fair.

        • One day later, AfterPay refunded the initial 25% to my card, and cancelled the remaining 75%.
So the process does work, even though the emails make no sense. The PayPal refund email says "The money has been refunded to your MASTER_CARD x-0308" which isn't a card number of mine ! Must be their internal "AfterPay Card" ?

  • 'Not really a traditional "deal"'

If it doesn't look like a deal, walk like a deal or quack like a deal then it's………….

  • is it really happening in this century, that people are buying something when they cant afford to pay it cash right now (while not scarifying their basic needs) ?
(im not talking about paying with CC to get point, i do this and pay off all balance on time)

really? they what happen when emergency strikes or lost a job?

    • +1

Yeah, nobody went into credit card debt before the year 2000.

  • Try to compete with Amazon that has zip pay

  • No more eBay for me, A lot of crooked sellers.

I just hope that Amazon will expand in the coming years and take a lot of market share, their customer service is WAAAAYY ahead of most Australian Retailers.

    • Amazon are greedy too taking away Cashback on all decent categories . It’s unfortunately a battle of them both of maximising profits during these dire times .

      • Yeah too bad, it was good until it lasted. But to be honest, there's no cashback on amazon US for people buying there.

But in terms of customer service here in Australia, nobody can't beat Amazon.

  • Ebay and Afterpay is a nightmare, treid to buy a tv payment went through and all, to be refunded and cancelled 10 minutes later treid 4 times same deal..
