Doom 64 is worth it at $7.55 too…

I've been playing Doom (1993) on my switch the past few days for the first time. Good fun.

  • -1

    Comes free with doom eternal

    • What's that?

      NVM - found it. Expensive!

      • +1

Probably because it's about 2 weeks old

    • Really? Which platform? I bought it on XB1 and haven't seen any mention of bonuses.

      • +1

        You unlock it in game.

      • +1

Doom 64 was a preorder bonus if that’s what they were referring to.

        • +2

Doom 1&2 can be played from within the game for free.

Just need to finish the game to gain access.

It's on Doom slayers PC in his room on the fortress.

Doom 3 is $7.47 on Microsoft store too

I can still remember buying a magazine with a shareware demo on 2 or 3 floppy discs of the the original Doom back in 1994. Yes, I can even remember that the news agency was in Chatswood station.
    What else can i say.

    • +2

Similar experience here. Fired it up late one night to see what this 'Doom' game was and OMG!

    • Shareware, those were the days :)

  • +1

Well I just spent an hour on Doom on my XBOX - great fun. Can't remember the secrets though :-)

DOOM II any good? Very tempted to get Doom (1993) for Xbox too.

      • Please god let Brutal Doom get a console port sometime, soon.

        • technically its probably not hard, but doubt they will do it. the good thing is it'll run on pretty much any potato out there

          • @abctoz: Not easily on my Chromebook. Doom is one of like 3 games I keep on here. I got Doom, Duke 3D, and Dark Forces via DOSBox. That's about all you can get it to run before booting full blown into Linux.

I just mean with WAD support on consoles, and Bethesda supporting (and profiting off) mods in Fallout and the sort. Let me throw another 5/10 bucks at the new Doom ports to unlock Brutal Doom. I'd be over the moon(base).

            • @TheDukeOfNukem: the thing is they have to pay the original developers, something they may not want to do

i don't know exactly how the modding works, but it runs off a custom port of doom too, one of them is called "zandronum", it makes a lot of neat enhancements to gameplay and graphics, these might work on chromebook too through wine(and many other games like deus ex)

    • Doom 2 is great. I like it more than the first one.

    • +2

Literally holding 4x Doom II floppies in my hand now

    • DOOM II is one of my favourite games of all time.

  • I approve of this post.

  • +1

They trying to promote the new Doom Eternal, that came out a few days ago. Very fun, very similar to the 2016 Doom, amazing games that live true to the legacy of the og games

  • +1

Is Doom and Doom 2 good to play on this gen consoles? Widescreen etc?

    • +4

Nah. Save them for next gen in a few months. Gonna look amazing.

      • They will look the same on next gen consoles via the backwards compatibility features of the Xbox Series X and PS5. Buying them now or in 2021 will make no difference to how they will look.

    • Jokes aside, some reviews are actually quite poor for the ports to console due to several issues. Hopefully these have been patched?

      • There’s been multiple performance patches since then.

        Here’s a Digital Foundry revisit - https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=emb_title&v=ZRIvHF-msJU

      • Yeah, watch the latest YouTube Digital Foundry update on the Doom ports (search "New Doom Patch Is Brilliant: Disappointing Ports Are Now Must-Buy Purchases ").

They now have (limited) mod support and come with John Romero's new campaign, run at 60fps with most of the other reported issues resolved.

They're really good. It's still a shame that Bethesda took down the original Xbox 360 versions that were back compat with Xbox One that had online multiplayer though.

        • Cool, thanks both. Good to hear.

  • Srlsy how many times and ways do i need doom

  • Any advantage over the backwards compatible X360 versions?

    • +3

I believe they support official expansions such as Final Doom for free and for the first time on consoles

    • +1

WAD support is the main thing, Sigil, Final Doom, and supposedly more on the way, at no extra cost is sick.

There's supposedly a weapon wheel now too which I don't know how to feel about. PS4 version auto updated itself so I guess I'm stuck but I might leave the Switch one untouched. There's 60 FPS support in the update now too but considering the game was never meant to run at 60, and ran just fine on PS3/360 (and almost anything else), I don't consider it much a benefit, but it's there.

With the expansions, it's in either of them. So say you have Doom 1 or 2 on 360 but not both, you can buy the other one on Xbone and still get all the WADs.

      • There are separate email expansions for Doom 1 and 2. Some overlap, some don't.

        • I don't know how "email" got into that comment or what it autocorrected from

  • Such memories :''''')

  • Already have Doom 1-4+E&64 on PS4. Already have Doom 1-4 on Switch. Already have the D3BFG 360 disc for Xbone with all 3 OGs.

…Buuuut I did buy a discless Xbox One a week or two back and might need to play these on Xbox before the next genner drops and lets me put the BFG disc in.

Oh man. This is awesome. I've been reading Masters of Doom and am so inspired by the id team behind Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Doom II.

    • +2

Wish that book had a sequel that covered later timeframes with id Software sort of dropping off the radar for years, Rages rocky release, Dooms 2016s development hell and eventual critical acclaim, Bethesda purchase and John C leaving the company to join Occulus and the subsequent lawsuits. Could bring up Machine Gun Games Wolfenstein titles. Even some interviews or insights on Romero releasing Doom maps 20+ years later (Tech Gone Bad and Sigil WAD).

Think there’s plenty of interesting things to read about, especially given the glory days for id sort of ended after Quake 3 and there was this long troubled period with infighting and firings over Doom sequels etc. Would be an interesting contrast to Masters of Doom which ended in a company going from strength to strength by and large.

      • I wish there were more books tied into this industry in general.

  • +1

    Happy demon slaying Ozbargain!

  • Says 21 hours left for Xbox btw.
