NBN Speed (Area - Speed - NBN Type - ISP)

Hi Everyone

Given quite a few of us are working from home, wanted to know how are the ISPs performing.
In addition to that, I have seen many comments every now and then in the forums or other websites, where people are saying NBN is quite bad.

I have just switched to NBN and am consistently getting speeds of 85-100Mbps and upload speed of 35+ Mbps.

Has NBN gone better or is the connection type that matters. I have FTTC.
I am not too technical but what are your experience been given that NBN by now, should be more consistent and 'settled'.

I am in the Hills Region in Sydney.

Castle Hill - 85 to 100 Mbps - FTTC - TPG

This anecdotal information is utterly useless to anyone as there are many different factors that affect speed and bandwidth. What I get for my case vs you vs someone else bears no resemblence to each other especially at different times throughout the day.

In general Aussie Broadband and Superloop are well regarded as they have their own dedicated bandwidth networks which means you do not get any slowdowns or throttling. You seem happy on TPG, others have complained about them here…

Check your ISP CVC graphs to see data usage vs overall bandwidth e.g. https://www.aussiebroadband.com.au/cvc-graphs/

    • See, as i said i am not too technical, hence no idea that there are so many factors.

I actually had a perspective that NBN will be useless (co of all negative comments on different forums) and 5g is the way to go or even may be Optus 4g plan. But was pleasantly surprised, to see my NBN speeds in the last 3 days at various times in the day , hence wanted to know did I get lucky or the perspective regarding NBN is changing.

      • NBN connection type is the main thing that matters. FTTC is pretty good when it works. FTTC does have room for improvement in regards to increased speed.

Where 5G is available it will be a NBN replacement for some people. Not everybody.

  • I am on Superloop FTTP 100/40 and I have noticed things are actually faster than before the 'lockdown' started. I guess my ISP upped their CVC when this started so they wouldn't have an overburdened call centre but can't be totally sure.

All ISPs were offered 40% more CVC at no charge from NBNCo, all they had to do was ask for it.

      • That's awesome.

OPTUS HFC Connection | 50/20 Entertainment Bundle with VOIP

    Speeds:
    PING: 29ms
    Download: 31.30mbps
    Upload: 15.95mbps

Currently connected via VPN with Backup and Syncing running in the background.

    • Was the speed test done when vpn was active? That'd be pointless

      • Currently connected via VPN with Backup and Syncing running in the background.

Not pointless as this was done intentionally to show the load on the speed and how it hasn't affected the speed in my area in a significant way.

  • Aussie Broadband HFC
    Down: 46.6
    Up: 18.6
    Plan: 50/20 unlimited
    Ping: 10ms (on 5GHz wifi)
    Northcote, VIC
After originally hearing HFC horror stories, Aussie Broadband service has been nearly flawless.
