Advice on Imesh Router to Boost Internet around The House

Hi,
Looking to getting a mesh router setup to boost internet around the house. Need to cover around 30 meters from original modem location.

Current setup:

A. We have optus cable broadband. i suppose it is a modem/router. Looking to switch to NBN. That will have its own model/router.

To get:

Need to get mesh system. Friend suggested Asus AC1900
https://www.mwave.com.au/product/asus-rtac67u-aimesh-ac1900-…

Question:

A. So i buy one of these router with minimum 2 routers. one needs to connect to current model/router. Then other device is placed around house. so it works like extender. Is my understanding correct?

B. Do you guys have any recommendation for unit to buy? It looks like you need to spend around $250-$300 to 2 pack system as bare minimum. Google mesh is around $399.

I'm currently deciding between the TP link deco M5 or the google nest wifi

    • Think the m5 you can get a 3 pack for around 270ish

  • NBN supply the NTD for FTTP, FTTC and HFC. NBN don't supply the modem for FTTN and FTTB and you need to source your own. You can setup the ASUS RT-AC67U with all kinds of NBN.

    Yep your understanding is correct.

    Tenda for a budget option.

Personally I am using the Orbi and it is great. FTTP so just connect the router straight in the cabinet and it was good to go.

    This is still true:
We got the Tenda mesh 3 pack and it has been awesome in our spread out home. Marginal wi-fi is now great, and NBN speedtest on our 100Mbps shows 50-60Mbps at the end of the house.
It was under $100 with an eBay coupon and I should have got it earlier.

    • It's around $90 for twin pack. I need to cover around 30 meter distance or 150 square metre. How come they are so cheap? Any other brand is around $270 mark aleast

I think if you are trying to run >100mbps across the wireless to stream high def movies from a NAS or media server, the costlier ones might be an improvement.
Since my network isn't used for anything faster than the NBN, it seems fine to me.

        • Thanks. Ours is around 30-40 mbps only with cable and when we upgrade to NBN would go to max 50 (optimistic :)). Main usage for us to live stream a yoga class via Zoom/Skype.
Maybe i'll try a trip pack as its extra $50 and see how it goes.

      • Tenda are cheaper because there wireless AC1200 and have none or 1 or 2 ethernet LAN ports.

The more expensive mesh router packs have faster than AC1200 or AX wifi, more ethernet LAN ports, cover a larger range and more..

        • The three pack models have an eth port in each (actually two, but one is WAN).
I don't know about range, I understood the higher frequencies didn't extend range much.
