New to PS4 Gaming - What Games Do You Recommend?

Actually, I haven't used a gaming console in 10+ years. I grabbed a PS4 PRO today.

What games do you recommend, and what price should I pay new/used?

I don't know what COD or Battlefield versions to buy!

Can you try demos? Total newbie since PS1 I THINK 🤣🤣🤣

Thanks

  • With COD and BF, best to just get the latest versions.

Also depends on what style of game you want to play.

    • I understand that, I'm open to anything which people think it amazing.

Horizon Zero Dawn (fantastic open world game set in the future where humans have tribes again and they're are robotic dinosaurs and creatures roaming the earth)
Destiny 2 (Free to play, looter shooter game)
Stardew Valley (farming sim with some rpg)
    Bloodborn (like darksouls, great game)

Games that have won game of year are mostly good, all depends on your playstyle and preference.

  • Final Fantasy 7 released early in JB Hifi last week

    Red Dead Redemption 2

Last of Us, uncharted 4, Spiderman

  • +1 to Final Fantasy 7 remake

I’m enjoying COD War Zone. But, I acknowledge COD isn’t every gamer’s cup of tea.

Free to download and to play. Have avoided any in-game purchases completely.

God of War, Uncharted Series, Horizon Zero Dawn, Spiderman.

Currently playing RDR2 and finding it a bit slow.

  • Personally I didn't like Horizon Zero Dawn. I found that game to be incredibly slow and repetitive. The rebooted Tomb Raider series is pretty good, Uncharted 4 is free this month if you have PS Plus (I'd recommend getting your hands on the Uncharted collection which bundles parts 1-3 before playing 4). Bloodborne (if you don't mind dying a bunch). I also like turning my brain off and blowing stuff up in the Just Cause series.

    • I also wasn't a huge fan of Horizon. I played about 5hrs and couldn't get into it. The world seemed interesting. But felt a bit to similar to Assassins Creed?? I would have preferred a more linear experience. Same with AC Odyssey. Just too much of a time sink with not enough exciting stuff happening inbetween.

If you like Just Cause. Try Ghost Recon Wildlands. Wildlands reminded me of a weird mix between Metal Gear Solid V, Just Cause/Mercenaries.

      • Is AC Origins better than Odyssey? I don't like time sinks

  • Where should I look for the best prices? I've found USED, most want more than online. BigW seems to have a sale at the moment! Thanks for all the recommendations!

  • Agree with everyone else so won't repeat them. A few of my absolute favourites - Nioh, Nioh 2, Sekiro, Assassins Creed:Odyssey, Nier:Automata. All these are 3rd person, which I prefer.
Amazon AU has some good prices. Just need to keep an eye out. They all go cheaper once they've been out for a while.

Yakuza 0, Nier Automata, Persona 5 - That's easily 200? hours of your life.

    I'm all for JRPGs

  • FIFA

    Hi Lyork,

    I bought a PS4 simply for:
    God of War
    Last of Us

These are the definition of system sellers. The two are entertaining all the way through and don't have a dull moment. They are games you have to own and playthrough if you have the system.

The below games are worth owning if you like more pick up and play games. Straight Forward/smaller commitment/linear games with roughly 7-15 hour campaign playthrough times. Good to burn off steam after work.

Uncharted 4 (+ Uncharted 2 in the remastered trilogy)
    Doom/Doom Eternal
    Call of Duty Modern Warfare
    Resident Evil 2/RE7
    Jedi Fallen Order
    Titanfall 2
    Bioshock Remastered
Tomb Raider/Rise of the Tomb Raider

The below games are great. However are more daunting/time consuming games requiring more patience/playtime/commitment. Some are 20+ hours. Due to story, difficulty or repetitive or awkward gameplay mechanics (not that its a bad thing… But I would not recommend these straight away to new gamers).

    Red Dead Redemption 2
    Spiderman
    Bloodborn/Dark Souls
    Horizon
    Final Fantasy Remake
    Witcher 3
    Sekiro
    Nier Automata
    Shadow of the Colossus
    Horizon

any Naughty Dog game is worth it

    • Interesting, no COD?

      • If you enjoy the words "I did (stuff) to your mum" go get CoD, but there's better FPS games out there.

Also you NEED PS+ to play online, its not free.

  • Get the Playstation Plus and play Uncharted 4. It's worth it.

  • COD4 is fantastic for the zombie mode. It's a bit like Left 4 Dead, except the whole game is the finale part of a campaign. Fun in solo mode, and more fun with other people.

    • Which is COD4?

      • call of duty 4

        • Oh, it's an older version. I'll look into it!

          • @[Deactivated]: You're welcome my dude.

I'm in the same boat. Last console was ps2, got a ps4 pro this christmas purely because of this.
PSVR is also a game changer

            • @outlander: I've already bought 10-15 games! I figure if their on sale, or used it'll be hard to lose money! I don't game that much at all, but I'll see how i go! Hopefully enjoy it, esp on lockdown!

              • @[Deactivated]: Oh yeah. Which ones?

Ps4 games are so cheap now. Can't really go wrong.

                • @outlander: Quite a few on sale at Amazon atm:
                  UFC 3
                  Spiderman
                  Mortal Kombat 11
                  God Of War
                  Horizon Zero Dawn
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
                  BloodBorne

                  etc

  • My recommendations on this:

Trails of Cold Steel series- Really great underated J-rpg not much people know about

Resident Evil 2- it's on sale right now on the Playstation store, fantastic remake if you played the original for horror

Spiderman - good action game, a PS4 gold standard for action adventure

A Plague Tale: Innocence- an indie AA game, really good story game, won't spoil

Days Gone- open world action zombie game that has a good solid story.

Gravity Rush remastered and 2- if you're keen on platforming, nice little gem

  • As people mentioned it is about the genres you like. No matter what there is a must own title.
    - The Last of Us

    I have enjoyed
    - Tekken 7
    - Mortal Kombat XL + 11
    - Friday the 13th: The Game. Some balance patches have killed the fun in the game though.
    - Resident Evil 7 VR

I'm sure a search for top games on the net will net you a whole heap with videos to see what the game is about.

  • I'm looking to upgrade my hdd and go digital.. is there an alternative to the PlayStation store? Like jbhifi/Amazon prices but digital downloads.

  • Dark Souls 1, 2 and 3. These games will change the way you see video games forever.

    • DS3 deluxe is $17.95 at PS Store till 09/05!

      • Jesus, does that include all the DLC's as well? The downloadable areas/bosses are worth more than that on their own.
