Who is still going away for the Easter long weekend?

With non essential travel banned, I’m curious to know if some are just going have their Easter weekend away anyway.

To be clear - I’m not planning on it. More hoping we might be able to have a walk on our own local beach (600m away from home) without it being too crowded, but wondering if some people are still going ahead with a weekend away.

If you are still going away for the weekend, what are your reasons? Where are you going? Are you worried about being fined? Are you worried about catching or spreading COVID-19?

I will be having a BBQ together with my wife and son in the backyard, wonder how many people will call it in as an illegal gathering.

Shall buy more sausages to feed the cops when they turn up.

    • +5

They're members of your household. It's expressly permitted. Enjoy the snags.

      • +1

Yup, totally aware of that but I am sure there will be neighbors that see/smell the smoke and call it in as an illegal gathering!

        • +5

We use our BBQ all the time.
And we talk to our neighbours over the fence all the time.

Perhaps you don't have that same rapport with your neighbours?

          • +3

@GG57: This reminds me of this bloke who bbq in the park.
I feel sorry for him in this current climate.

            https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/382306

          • @GG57: Unfortunately not, it's a relatively new estate and we moved in recently so the rapport building is still in progress.

Maybe we need to BBQ more, use it maybe twice a year if that. Bought a pack of 4 head bead packs and after 8 years I'll be opening the last pack!

            • @iampoor: "You gotta up those numbers, they are rookie numbers"

I BBQ 3 times a week at minimum lol. Maaaybe drops to twice a week in the dark of winter.

    • Don't forget the donuts. :D

    • Got bacon?

I'm not able to go there due to border closures, but it does suck having to pay land tax and council rates this month for properties that the local council and government tells you to get stuffed. They're pretty happy taking my money and not a lot of talk about ratepayer relief.

    • Holiday home?

      • No, farm.

        • +1

          Not counted as essential?

          • @morse: Gotta grow some food

          • @morse: It's on free agistment and would also require quarantine. I'm not complaining about that, more local mayors charging full rates then telling those ratepayers to stay away because of inadequate infastructure. Councils love cash cows but are getting exposed right now.

            • +2

@[Deactivated]: You could, of course, sell the property and then you wouldn't have to put up with those oppressive rules and regulations.

              • @GG57: Which regulation, rule or by-law requires a mayor to tell a ratepayer who has passed quarantine not to go to their property?

Have another look. The laws are on the side of the landowners/ratepayers, with mayors on TV trying to bluff without actual clout.

                • +1

@[Deactivated]: Is your complaint about paying rates etc., or that you can't access your property, or that you can't access your property but still have to pay rates etc.

I'm pretty sure that the mayors are supporting the relevant state government Premier, in their call for people to #stayathome.

                  • @GG57: Check out Port Kembla's view on that one. ;)

                    • @[Deactivated]: I assume you refer to the mayor of Port Kembla welcoming the cruise ship that was stranded. If so, irrelevant to this discussion.

                      • @GG57: You find local infrastructure capacity irrelevant?

                        • @[Deactivated]: The relevance to you not being able to visit your property?

                          • @GG57: According to your meme theory, do internet hashtags fall under "rules" or "regulations"? I had filed them alongside parley.

                        • +1

@[Deactivated]: In most cases, councils still operate as per usual. Your bins will keep being collected, your roads are still being fixed. Essential services that councils operate such as community health centres etc. are still also operating. The funding they receive from state governments could also decrease from this, as well as any other income they get from operating other services such as pool which can no longer occur.

Councils should only offer rate relief for those that are going through hardship.

@kanmen: Rubbish bin collection? Haha. When was the last time you went to a rural area? Tourist alert.

Had a camping trip booked this whole week.
    Now working instead.

  • Would have gone to the beach as planned but they shut all the cafes down…..

    • They've shut the beaches here 😂

Its the people who continue to go away and ignore the bans that will keep us locked up for months to come.

no i am staying in Nazi Germany

    • You'd have more to do at least.

  • polices are still going away, free

Will be popping down to Bunnings tonight and I assume that's the only time I'll leave my place for the whole weekend.

    • Hope its quiet when you get there. Dropped-by my local Bunnings earlier in the week, and found a 60M queue at the door.

      • I went last Friday night and there was hardly anyone there so hopefully will be the same tonight.

  • I'm going to heaven

  • +1

honestly cant afford the $1600 fine

    • yup - $1300 in QLD, still a lot. I'm wondering how many will risk it for a day at the beach.

  • The nudist colonies/camps will probably be all closed, I can't imagine the police going in and checking around though, unless they gear up, or down… imagine a naked copper (either sex), badge pinned on, gun holster and utility belt and, of course, bullet proof vest.

    • +1

The police found a hole in the fence at my local nudist colony…Police are now looking into it!!!

<boom-tish> I will be here all week ;)

  • +1

Pitch the tent out in the backyard.

Had rec leave booked but that's cancelled.

    • We're debating setting up the camper trailer next to the fire pit and the chook shed lol Kids will love it no matter if we're at home or somewhere else :)

  • +2

I’d love to stay at home, sadly, I need the penalty rates to pay for all the crap I’ve Ozbargained this week 🙁

  • Just so you know, cops are monitoring this forum and in particular this post. They’re capturing your IP addresses and flagging the number plates of the owners of the services running the IP addresses. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

    • lol

  • Happy Easter everyone. Have fun with backyard camping, home BBQs and other family Easter activities. Thanks to those who are working. Stay safe! Particularly if you’re one of the 5 people who said they are still going away.

  • I think one of my neighbors has - they have already put their bins out for Monday morning and no car in the driveway.

    • +3

      Opportunity to fill those bins…

  • I think 600m is not just around the block… now is it!

Anyone thinking they can act contumacious to these Laws are simply people of low intelligence.

They struggle to comprehend the gravity of the situation.

Telling people you are sneaking off, is to them tough talk, no body can tell me what to do…. and they are absolutely right, because they do not have the capacity to understand.

    • +1

That is dumb , many people exercise more than 600 m from their homes . Join Andrews Hitler council. Yes the council permits this .
People like you are clueless about interpreting the rules .
      That is low intelligence!

    • Bahaha, um yeah, kinda is. The 600m takes about 7mins to walk and forms part of the walk, which includes my block. Pretty reasonable to take my dog and baby on a 30-40min walk in my local area. But like I said we have been avoiding the beach if it’s too busy and was hoping it might not be full of people from Brisbane or even other parts of the GC. If you’re doing less than 30mins exercise a day, you might want to organise a Telehealth consult with your GP. However I suspect you’re just trolling.

      • Well I have found working from home more like "working from bed" - maybe I should sign up to one of those NASA studies on bone density loss.

    • Contumacious - I like learning new words. Thanks for this one.
