DSE One Hour Deal (7pm - 8pm AEST) - Surge Interceptor 8 Way for $29 Delivered

540

Another one hour deal from Dick Smiths today between 7pm and 8pm AEST. This time SURGE INTERCEPTOR 8-Way Surge Board.

Here is product page http://dicksmith.com.au/product/M7810/.

"Provides surge protection for 8 mains outlets plus a phone line and TV coaxial cable socket. Includes coil/capacitor EMI filtering, 6 heavy-duty MOVs, varistor and gas discharge arrestors, protection status indicators, 10A circuit breaker plus 2,000 Joule and 60,000A maximum mains surge current rating. Includes 1.8 metre phone and F-type coax patch cables. Lifetime guarantee with $100,000 Connected Equipment Warranty."

I remember that there used to be a similar deal for this product at 3 for $99. So, it seems that this deal is slightly cheaper and the best is that you can only buy one instead of three.

  • Why would one want this when you have a surge protection main board? I prefer individual switch for each connector. However the deal is good.

    • +1

I guess most people don't have surge protection on the main board. This also protects the aerial (I've had a TV die from a lightning strike), so it seems like a useful device.

      • +1

If you had a direct hit, more than just the TV would have gone to god.

The closest i have come to a hit was having "feelers" comming off my HF ham antenna, they were about 2 meters in length, just like a plasma ball.

Its important when the surge supressors "fire" or clamp the surge voltage at a resonable level.
most dont clamp until the high voltage has already damaged your equipment.

some are just junk and a waste of money, giving a false sense of security.

    • Thanks for pointing that out, saved me $58!

Powerboards- another one of those arcane subjects that can drive you crazy. I have a few of these:

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/CABAC-8-WAY-SURGE-PROTECTION-POWE…

which I got for about $28 each, purely on the specs, and a couple of these:

    http://www.bigw.com.au/electronics/household-electrical/powe…

because Choice said they were good and BigW gave me a $20 delivered deal.

And a Bolton 8 way switched one

To me, they look as good or better than this DSE one, but really I don't have a clue.

    • FYI… just saw in Coles today they had the Crest powerboards on clearance pricing $17 plus some random cents…should have taken a pic(to help with my memory issues ;)

  • Ive got one of these. It doesnt exactly instill me with confidence.

They discount them regularly. I think they discount them to $49, which would make this cheap.

  • These are sometimes on catch of the day for around the same price, but the free delivery is pretty good.

  • +1

The Belkin 6 ways that DSE have had before for $29 delivered are great (and look nice) but lack the individual switches. The Belkin lifetime warranty is a nice to have also.

As DonkeyKong says, the individual switches are a big plus to have on a surge board.

And therefore i think i would prefer the ones from Dealsdirect. Currently out of stock but they re-stock them pretty quickly so I'm sure its just a matter of time before they have them again.
Has anyone had any experience with them?

Still, this DSE deal is quite good so +-ve from me.

      • Nice, I'll keep my eye out for this one when it comes in stock.

Individual switches and power pack friendly plugs make it better for me.

    • +2

Yes. I have 2 Belkin (8 ways?) purchased from DSE before. However, some of my socket shape is "square", not
able to plus it in. Belkin only support plug in circle shape.

  • I think better to wait for the BigW Crest surge protector with the $25k insurance

    • +2

These ones actually have $100K insurance with lifetime warranty. got 2 myself, not bad. cant comment on the claims process, really hoping i wont ever have to!

  • just as a note, i saw yesterday at ikea, 2pk of 6 plug adaptors (2m cable) for $10
and same thing but 3 or 4 plug for $7.

i was spewing as i recently bought the 6and4 plug ones from centrecom, but just thought i'd make a note of it…

  • Why are we comparing against other prices of surge protection boards with no insurance? 99% of the time no boards can actually protect from any surge strong enough to damage your equipment.

People buy this board for the insurance not for a "power board".

    • I have read few reviews, where people said, surge protectors saved their devices.

    • Has anyone actually ever heard of anyone getting insurance money from a power board manufacturer?

  • Ordered two, thanks.

  • I ordered two as well, thanks.

  • bought one ~thanks!

  • bought one thnxxx

  • Interesting….as of now (08:21pm), the deal is still active…

  • It's back to $89 now. Deal is finished.

  • nooooooooooo, I needed one, I was at a shopping centre the whole day and I did not notice this deal. FML.

  • I recently had a Belkin surge cube connected to a Samsung TV when there was a major lightening storm. Other rooms had no protection and I had a 42inch TCL TV, PS3, HDMI extenders, antenna amp plus a few others die. The Samsung 50inch TV was fine and the light on the surge cube is now off indicating that it protected the load(and needs to be replaced). I can't be 100% sure the TV would have died without it but dealing with the insurance company (and excess of $200) means I am willing to buy protection. I bought 2 of these.
