Best Baby Monitor for House with Terrible Internet

Ozbargainers,

I'm looking for the best baby monitor money can buy, especially for reliability.

Condition: I live in a house with woeful internet.

I've got a decent wifi router so if the camera only needs wifi to talk to the monitor, I'm covered. I previously had an iBaby M7 monitor, great on paper, not in practice. Went through 2 in a year and have given up on it.

Unfortunately most of the non-wifi baby monitor systems are under-spec'd and overpriced. Night vision is a must feature.

Any suggestions please? TIA

  • Wow. TIL baby monitors use internet. I thought they were still just like old school walkie talkies.

  • Only baby monitor you need is Angelcare AC401P Movement & Sound Baby Monitor, simple and work perfectly. No internet needed.

I used Oricom baby monitor for both my little ones, no internet req'd.

Sleeping with baby in same room.

Flagship mobile phones (for their 4k and low-light video capabilities) and baby/video monitoring apps (buy them all and then take your pick). Now you have HD video and audio streaming over Wi-Fi, as well as a cellular network for backup. And the system still works during blackouts. How's that for reliability which is your prime concern.

Just get a cheap IP camera? Plenty can work over WiFi. You can get security grade ones that are very good.

To be honest, OP, just avoid anything that's specifically made for babies. It's literally the same tech inside, but marketed to parents and sold at a huge premium.

  • I'm using Xiaomi Mijia 1080p and the quality is great. If you need audio while the phone is locked, im just using an audio transmitter that doesn't use wifi , just plug into the power points.

  • I have a specific baby monitor (https://www.catch.com.au/product/vtech-bm2700-safe-sound-vid…) which cost $75

We had this same discussion at home, about baby monitor vs camera. I was in favour of the camera, and my wife wanted the monitor

My question to you: will your phone screen be on constantly? What about overnight at 1am? Probably not, so what exactly is the point of the camera! In which case you need a dedicated screen to go with your camera.

This one gives a decent picture, i have it screwed onto the roof so it can see the entire cot from top down (there is no zoom so that's a bit annoying), it has a temperature sensor inside, doesn't use wifi, and has never failed. I'd definitely recommend it

granted i don't know how large your house is, or how far from baby room, etc. Maybe you need to extend your network first?

    • How can you see the cot from the roof?

      • ?? We wanted to see the entire cot clearly, so i've pointed the camera down at the cot…?

It's a joke, you out the camera on the ceiling, not the roof.

@brendanm: Oh whoops haha. I was awake pretty early thanks to the aforementioned baby

    I got this one

I like the bigger screen so it’s easier to see. The light on the side lights up on a scale for how much noise there is.

  • Have this one, it's all you need, doesn't run off wifi, the cot is at the other end of our house to our bedroom and range isn't an issue
