Is It a Good Idea to Buy a OnePlus 7T in Australia?

Pretty much the title. Was previously planning on going for the s20 but that'd be a big price increase for very minimal quality increase (if reviews are to be believed).

It'd be bought through ebay, "Oz digital online" is the store I'm looking at (ozb doesn't like me linking ebay).

I'm aware the oneplus 8 just released, I'll probably wait to see how that's priced via ebay but just doing a price/GST conversion shows that one would be more then/equal to a s20, so to expensive for me to really consider.

Thanks for any help.

  • I would wait. The new tech is always more appealing and the old tech gets cheap quick (as the new phone is just now released) :)

    • Yeah, hopefully the price is better then expected but it mostly seems like the oneplus 8 is just a small upgrade over the 7t.

Hopefully it results in a 7t price drop though, would be nice.

MKBHD on YouTube had a lot to say about OnePlus 8 Pro, check it out :)

The pro seems to be a substantial upgrade, but that'll be a decent bit over what I'm willing to spend for sure, closer to the s20+ then the 7t or even s20.

One Plus 8 and 8 Pro reviews have come out in the past day so not a bad time to buy. They have the hole punch selfie camera rather than the pop up too.

OP just needs to wait for a sale.

The oneplus 7t just has a notch, it's the 7t pro that has a pop up cam.

The 8 seems to have a few QoL things - a hole punch looks way better then a notch, the processor is a 865 rather then 855, screen is apparently brighter, more colourful etc, and it seems to be more structurally sound - but as of right now just doing a price conversion to AUD + GST would put it at about the same price as one of the s20s currently on sale, and the only thing the oneplus 8 would really have over SS is the notification slider and a slightly cleaner OS. So I'll probably just be holding for a bit in hopes the 7t has a price drop (or an ebay sale appears)then go for that one.

    • In terms of the price point OP is looking at, the tech in the 7T is still the best going around, the 8 is a slight upgrade but nothing that would be noticeable for the difference in the price.

  • Bought my 7T (256GB) from buybuybox at the end of last year for $690. Seems they have the 128GB for $693 right now. Though given the current environment shipping speed etc may be impacted

    • What do you do for a charger? I know oneplus use a fairly fast charger that's normally sent in box but given they don't officially sell here I'd imagine there's none of them with Australian plugs.

Are there other chargers that can charge as fast, do you have an adaptor or do you just have to charge slower?

Just use a travel adaptor (generally included from the seller you buy from).

  • Literally doing the same research right now for a new phone.
    im torn between
Oneplus 7T = $789 (possibly less depending on who has Australian Stock)
Oneplus 7T pro = $1079 (possibly less depending on who has Australian Stock)
    and
Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus = $1222 Delivered From Big w (i know someone with a staff discount)

The Oneplus 8 price seems to be on par with Samsungs pricing which is a no go for me personally if im spending that much ill go with Australian warranty and a top brand like Samsung even though i personally know they both will perform close to each other im also thinking about it's worth when im done with the device and wish to sell it.

I have owned a Oneplus 6 phone in the past and they are really good phones which is why im leaning to the Oneplus 7T but only if they have stock in Australia i don't want to wait personally for shipping from oversea's especially during this coronavirus.

    • Edit: deleted

    • That's the real shame of it all. The 4G s20+ was available for $1029 and the 5G for $1149 last month direct from samsung EPP. I couldnt commit ot it with all the bad comments on battery. now the OP8Pro is going to be $1400+ no doubt. I'm changing my thinking completely and considering the pixel 4a maybe.

    • I was in the same boat having a 6,- pulled the trigger on a 7T after doing lots of research. Should be a solid upgrade. Was disappointed by the Op8 prices and specs.

I bought the 7T in February this year for $583, awesome device, would definitely recommend! Even over the 8, the price of the 7T at $583 can't be beaten by anything at the moment. The 8 will be too expensive for a long time, and I chose the 7T over the 7 Pro / 7T Pro due to the curved screens on those devices, not a huge fan.

    • I know this is late but where did you find it for that price? Was it a deal I missed, just looking now and can't find anything close. Even 2nd hand prices are higher than that haha

      • When I was in the market for one I was refreshing http://buybuybox.com/special-offers every 30 minutes (obsessive I know haha) and a killer deal popped up for the 7T $583 delivered. So I bought it and went to post to OzBargain but the price changed literally 2 minutes after I posted.. So not sure if it was a price error, but whatever happened I definitely got lucky. But I would recommend monitoring that webpage for OnePlus deals, though may be scarce in this current Covoid environment.

  • Where is everyone finding these well priced op 7s?

  • Personally, the oneplus 7T is an amazing phone having used it during one of my tests and in my opinion better than the S20 as the S20 in Australia at least uses Samsungs EXYNOS chip which has been tested by countless youtubers to have a worse battery life on an already poor battery life phone. The oneplus 8 is also an amazing phone and if you can find it under 900 dollars is an amazing pick up. But the price for oneplus phones in Australia doesnt fluctuate much even if they are a year old. Usually in the phones second year the price will fall. This in addition to the weak Aussie dollar the phone is actually more expensive than 3 months ago.

PS: Try stay away from cheap deals like buybuybox as i have had shipping issues with that company

PS2: Also warrenty is very hard to claim in Australia

Good luck and hope your happy with any purchase you make

I've bought my last 4 OnePlus phones though BuyBuyBox and Perfect Mission (same company) with never any issues, phone arrived in 3-5 days every time. Just my two cents.

Yeah fair enough, i have heard countless good reviews and experience buying through these sites its just my personal experience and also if im already paying 800 i may as well pay another 100 for security. But i understand some people spending 800 on a phone is already absurd. I was in that boat using a 3 year old lg phone for about 4 years.

Ultimately ended up just deciding to wait for the s21 and with it what should be a significantly improved exynos chip. The warranty with a phone that expensive is a risk I'm not totally wanting to take, and the s20s thernal issues would probably end up effecting me so decided it would be better to avoid

      • Fair enough, im thinking about doing the same as my Oneplus 7T actually smashed!! Long story but i had it in my pocket sat in the car and went to shut the car door, the phone fell and got slammed between the door and car. Giant Fluke accident but the screen was only smashed. When i went to get it repaired nowhere had the parts so it was going to cost the same as getting a new phone. But the current era of phones are extremely expensive which is why im on the fence about the S20. The sharp price is mainly due to Snapdragon the chipset having set requirments for use, including a large space which means larger screen as no one wants bezels, large screen means larger battery and increases the cost dramatically. I hope they change it for the next chipset as having a monopoly like snapdragon effects the end consumers, especially budget buyers.
