Medjool Dates (Loose) $12 Per kg (Was $18-$20 Per kg) @ Coles

900

It's again that time of the year when loose Medjool dates are put on a special price in Coles (Woolies is still strangely at full price). It is generally a 'once in a year' promo.

Price at Woolies is $20/kg, at the time of posting.

Edit: Woolies dropped their price to $14/kilo.

Are supermarkets still as busy as before?

    • My local Coles and Aldi were pretty chill today.

I went for a provision run yesterday, there is a restriction on how many people can be in the store at a time … some people don't seem to understand what 1.5m distancing means and I have seen numerous people barefeet strolling around peacefully.

      • yep same here

Hope people havnt been touching them…

    • +9

hate people trying to touch my loose date

      • +5

If its loose, seems like you enjoy it rather than hate it

There's no sign stating look but don't touch.

        • at least at my local coles, they're on the top shelf… at woolies, they're at kid height…

    • That. Have seen people using their hands to pluck out the ones they want.

  • Went to my nearest Coles this morning, they had no stock. (saw a Coles delivery truck pulling in, so they might not have received stock yet)

Went to the next nearest Coles and they had plenty of stock.

Usually dates imported here come from USA or Mexico. Any chance of harvesters with corona? :S

    • +4

      If from Mexico, probably.

      • +2

This is the birthplace of Corona, the real origin and it's made by the truckload.

    Pack said thawed on 12/04/2020.

So I'm guessing they've been frozen for some time.

Guess I'll find out in a week eh.

Great deal, also a good reminder Ramadan is starting soon :)

  • Can't get a date anywhere! I'm going MGTOW.

  • Lots of dates in new Coles in Tarneit West - scored maybe 200g

  • Cheers, Valentine's Day sorted.

  • I see these sometimes. I don't get it. They're cheaper cause they're 'loose' or is it a seasonal thing.

Ramadan special, they sell like hot cakes.

They probably sell more in these couple of weeks than the whole year.

      • +1

If they keep this price for whole year, I am sure they will sell reasonably well across the year. Many people, including me, aren't in when they are at $20 to $25/kg even though I love these dates. That's just absurd price but unfortunately it's always at that price except these 2-3 weeks.

My friend pitted these, stuffed it with a roasted almond and dipped in chocolate. It was like a snickers bar but yummier. Wish they didn't have so much sugar.

  • I found a listing on eBay for 1KG of "Al Barakah Premium Arabian Dates" for about $7 - Seller is in Melbourne. Are these the same things just in like the bulk pack or are they different?

I'm thinking of making my own bliss balls :D

    • +1

Ha ha. I got sucked into this Arabic name as well. Somehow confused Medjool with Al Barakah ( both sounding ME to me) and bought a kilo from Coles last year.Paid $4/5 for them.

Al Barakah were dry and nothing special. Ignore the word Premium !

      Medjool is the real deal.

      • Thanks! I might have been getting suckered in by the fancy box.

Dry dates will make pretty poor bliss balls. I'll suss out the loose ones, thank you so much for the info!

      Barakah Obama?

  • Give me a prune over a date any time. Prunes are the best!

    • Tastes don't compare, mate. If you don't like sweet fruits much and prefer sour, then obviously prunes are for ya. Price-wise, the prunes are much cheaper than Mejdool dates but you can probably compare them with the standard pitted dates that you get in stores.

It is obviously because Ramadan (fasting season) is close. Thanks Coles for these kind offers each year.

  • +2

They go on sale in the lead up to Ramadan, as traditionally the fast is broken with dates.

Came for the loose Date comments

    Was not disappoint.

  • Really good for constipation

My local Coles had 5KG boxes for $55 each ($11/kg).

    • Yup, saw them at Coles.
