Hey, Loake Shoes is having a big promotion:

Slum It in Style
Working From Home has never looked so good

20% Off All Shoes*
One Week Only!!
*Excluding Accessories | Valid until Fri 17/04/20 23:59 AEDT

Some stock available directly from Australia (Quick Delivery take 2-3 days) and some ordered directly from the UK factory (2-3 weeks delivery) but I reckon the shipping are taking longer due now to Covid.

Also, they have some discount / discontinued styles there: https://www.loakeshoes.com.au/collections/clearance and this 20% works on it! Means that you can have some beauty as low as chips!

A bit about Loake:

Loakes are an old English shoe brand, and make Goodyear Welted shoes which, other than being higher quality, allow your shoes to be re-soled time and again letting one pair of shoes to last literally decades, in true OzB style.

I would advise the collections 1880 and Shoemakers because they are from Englands, it looks like others are made in India?

Anyway, these are awesome shoes. I have been looking for GYW shoes but their price range is usually 450-800$ which I cannot afford.

  • You must be eating very expensive chips!

These do look great though… but I never have any luck with shoes online. Even wide fittings aren't always wide enough.

Nice shoes but the prices are very pre-global economic recession

Preventing British retailers from selling Loake shoes to Australia so you can create a monopoly and fix prices earns a neg from me.

    • +2

Yup! That was a very low act by Loakes. I however have bought Loakes through other means bypassing the Australia export restriction.

I miss the vat free prices…

  • +6

Still more expensive than buying overseas, however this is increasingly difficult due to your forced monopoly.

    I'd rather support RM Williams.

I've heard Loakes have really gone down in quality as of late

  • +3

Great! I'll wear these shoes to working from home

Bloody awesome shoes. Two pairs from the mid 90s lasted me a couple of decades each (with many resoles along the way), and so, so comfortable after a short break in. Much cheaper and much more comfortable than buying lower quality in the long run.

I got a new pair in 2015 - no issues with quality then.

Loakes are a good entry point into welted shoes. If i could suggest an alternative look at https://www.herringshoes.co.uk/. Better quality with dianite rubber soles.

Some herring models are made by loake as well

    • +1 for Herring. especially since they are doing the world health care worker promotion, you can get 30% off by using the discount code of WHW2020, but you'll need to upload an ID. So if you have a family member that works in healthcare that will come in handy.

That said, this was my first venture into entry dress shoes and bought 5 pairs of herring classics last month, all arrived safely via DHL but got the sizing incorrect, which is unfortunate but lcuky as I bought their cheap $8 DHL return label, DHL will come to the door to collect the shoes. And a good thing is I don't have to pay DHL shipping to AU for my exchanges.

Any thoughts on herring shoes? I am a newbie so I thought the leather was pretty stiff compared to the lower end ones I used to wear. Will they soften over time? I noticed that the classics are usually done by Barker and Carlos Santos and their premier line done by Cheaney.

I love my 860s but hate the way they gouge Aussie consumers.

    • If you know anyone in the UK who can reship these to you. But with COVID-19 throwing FedEx/DHL/TNT/UPS off their normal schedules, might take 3-4 weeks before you see your shoes.

      • Nope. Wouldn't want to call in favours from acquaintances with the situation they're in.

        • Yeah you're right! Probably not the best time to be calling in favours due to the current situation. Hopefully all this self quarantine/isolation/lockdown pays off soon.

  • I hate to be that guy but anyone wanting to get into welted leather sole shoes, my advise is don't really. They are undeniably good looking and sound solid when walking but the fact of the matter is:
    1. they are extremely uncomfortable
    2. soles wear out extremely quickly, you have to get them resoled all the time if regular wear
    3. expensive

Might be fine for a special pair of shoes for occassional wear but I wouldnt recommend it for anything you want to wear regularly
